Jax is definitely trying to convince *himself* he's the "fun guy who just doesn't care" more than he's trying to convince everyone else.

Jake DB

Jax has just been hurt so much in the past, the fact that he puts on a face and tries to play everything off.... its really good. Hell, he literally lies through his teeth to Pomni, saying he doesn't care but deep down he cares so much and some people have theorized that its either because he feels partly responsible for Kaufmo and Ribbity abstracting or its because he got close to them and ended up losing them that he just can't handle going through with that again. There are a lot of little moments that point to something like this being the case throughout this entire episode and even the others

LikeCat

... And fails (as seen at the end), I mean you can only lie so much... Especially to yourself.

Ben Disney

You and your girlfriend's reactions are almost the same length!

og.monstr

Best episode so far. 🤩 I do appreciate how Ragatha got some much-needed help from Kinger; I DID NOT look forward to seeing her go off the deep end. Hopefully she and Pomni are going to grow closer from now on.

Dark Siri

Assuming Kinger's assessment was correct, that lasting so long without abstraction is based on mental reliance, who shows the least resilient? (Resilience defined by continuing on as you always do when faced with something that you have to adapt to.) This episode, it was Jax, by a country mile. Second least resilient based on past episodes... Gangle maybe? No, Ragatha I think.

Andy

Kinger talks like he was alone in the circus for a long time before Ragatha arrived... I have a theory that he and his wife were the first ever to enter it and you're right that he was one of the creators of the game and has admin powers there. So after his wife abstracted, Kinger blamed himself and hated himself so much that he created Caine to punish him But then Ragatha showed up and changed Kinger's attitude, so he switched Caine to a wacky ringmaster who makes games to keep them entertained! It would explain why he's not the best at it and why he's sometimes obsessed with violent/horror elements if fun and games weren't his original purpose and Kinger was already half-crazy when he did the rewrite. But this would also mean that if Caine ever glitches enough to return to his original programming, it could be very VERY bad

Joey Quixote

This episode was top tier. Both Gangle and Ragatha got some words that I think a lot of people needed to hear. The lighting on Zooble wasn't lost on me, but nor was their reflection in Gangle's mask as they gave her a pep talk. I think Kinger really saved Ragatha this episode. She was in a bad place at the end of the last episode and was spiraling here. I cannot wait until we know the full story on these characters. I had a hunch Jax was going to be so much more complicated than he insisted. And now we know. I'm still not a fan of him. I've met too many "charming assholes" in my life. They're exhausting. I am sympathetic to Jax at least as there's clearly some trauma there. But hopefully Jax can turn his shit around and show us some growth. Again with the keys... How did he manage that? And why was Caine able to mess with his mind again? Don't let your girlfriend make Moof twerk.

Definitely my favorite episode so far that showed half the cast getting the therapy and comfort they needed. Loved Gangle & Zooble’s heartfelt scene as well as Ragatha’s and Kinger’s. And Jax and Pomni’s really highlighted Jax’s internal struggle. Jax is in major denial. When he’s trying to embody his “funny” persona, his pupils are dilated but when he’s being vulnerable and showing his emotions and humanity, they shrink. If you notice when Pomni hugged him, he initially enjoyed it and was smiling, but when he realized they were getting close, he shoved her away and went back to that detached state. He is distancing and detaching himself from everyone because I think he is afraid to form attachments and connections because of the pain of losing someone he’s connected to again, such as Ribbit. This episode is essentially the subtext said out loud and full of parallels. Ragatha’s coping mechanism is to be an optimistic people-pleaser who is there for everyone, while Jax’s is to be a nihilistic jerk who needs no one. Gangle has an avatar that represents masking, while Jax masks his vulnerability through cruel acts. I don’t think he actually finds the things that he does funny but that it’s what he’s telling himself so that no one gets close to him. Kinger is such a Dad and I love him! The reason I think he was able to manifest the healing butterfly for Ragatha was because he worked as some form computer programmer (if you remember episode 3, he stated he had done seven years of computer science) Also, I think Caine seeks validation and is another part of the spectrum of people-pleasing like Ragatha. And because Zooble doesn’t take him on and he got no votes from the fans as a favorite, he believes he is doing his job incompetently and starts to glitch out

Sasraek

One of the running theories is that Jax being awful and detached is keeping his sanity together. Something happened that was so awful that he constantly has to see the world around him as a game because if it was real, than what he did was real. Like killing Ribbit. If it is a game, then Ribbit is still alive, but if it is real, then Jax essentially committed murder or subjugation Ribbit to eternal torcher.

Tammy Ragsdale

Ah, hadn't really thought about Kinger and the bug thing. I was leaning more toward him being a programmer responsible for the game in the first place. But Admin also makes sense. Either one could definitely support the idea of him being Able.

Ryan

"That's what everyone wants, a straight couple." Well, that's what the Wednesday crew thinks.

Shay

Bro, yeah! Why do they think their audience is straight people? We watch it because we're all "weird", so why bother following with societal norms for a show specifically made about NOT fitting in societal norms? Just let Enid and Wednesday be together already, I need my sunshine/moonlight lesbians😭

Ryan

The neighbors, during all the yelling and screaming: "Ma'! The sapphics are bein' loud again!" Kinger could have been on the dev team - possibly on QA. They playtest the game, have access to cheat codes, and find bugs. Him being better in the dark could be a simple joke that he prefers dark mode themes for his IDE. My family learned the term "neuropspicy" from my older sister's partner as a more fun alternative to "neurodivergeant". And everyone in my family has a full spice rack. Obviously, the trio were re-enacting their favorite cat videos... ---- Kinger mentioned that Gangle and Jax are the youngest - and Jax reads like an angry edge lord who is trying to mask with "humor" and compensate with hyper masculine behavior. And I could read into the "...egg that needs to be cracked open..." comment since those are two key words for the trans experience. And he really, *REALLY* didn't like being put in the maid's outfit. Maybe I am reading too far into things - if we're going on the theory that this is a VR therapy game gone wrong, it would be interesting for Jax to be what he appears to be - an angry boy, keeping the world at arm's length because if you hurt people first, they can't hurt you. A chance to discuss the dumpster fire in the middle of a barren desert that is men's mental health. No, I don't see the worst parts of my younger myself in Jax, why do you ask?

Phoenix_mercury

Yeah super Sus on kinger especially after this, me and my buddy love the neurospicy term🤣 also this episode had me in tears twice, both bcz of Jax(yes I was actually worried he was starting to abstract at the end during his PA)

Ashizaka

Jax is so vastly misunderstood, by a confoundingly large portion of the fanbase.

LikeCat

Me sees the word wierd... My mind: „We're all wierd" „So why were you with the circus?" „BECAUSE I'M WIERD" - 😈🦚

jellybrigades

I think it’s important to remember that sharing your philosophy isn’t the same as forcing someone to be like you. As Pomni said last episode, she can think for herself. She chose to play the villain role. I feel like I talk about Jax a lot, but this garbage cartoon rabbit is so fascinating to me. I left a comment on Mosco’s Patreon reaction about Jax’s nihilism to cope, but I wanted to talk about his response to his treatment of others being turned on him. He hates being the victim to bullying, not because it’s mean, but because it’s a loss of control. That’s why he was so upset over the maid costume. He can’t control his situation, but he can control his response to it, e.g. the archetypes.

Annieme

I think this is also my favourite episode so far. It was fascinating and so much to dissect :3

jellybrigades

It’s also kinda sweet that Elijah can’t fathom Jax as a character because his behavior is so beyond anything she’d ever think or do.

Adrian

Just wanna remind you for Kinger since you were asking if he's obsessed with bugs because he's a hacker. When he was talking with Pomni in E3 he mentioned how he used to hate bugs, but his wife helped him to love them. So i think his obsession with bugs is more because of his wife. Tho I really think he could be a hacker. He did say he used to work in computer development so its not far fetched for him to do that.

Cladriah

I think Kinger ability to drift between madness and lucidity, and his computer skills allow him to understand the game in a way others can't. It's less of hacking and more of understanding the chaos of it all. He can make new rules because he understands that he can will a rule into place through consciousness.

Cladriah

It's like lucid dreaming.

Whiskey

A surprising number of reactors just call him a jerk or something anytime he does anything, without ever seeming to think there might be more to him.

Lunar Blitz

in the bible, caine was the one who killed abel. my theory is because everyones avater is a reflection of themselves... (ex: gangle constantly puts on a mask but is actually sad inside, revealed in the fast food ep. zooble hates her body and cant find parts she likes, ragatha being the rag doll that took abuse. pomni thinking her life is a joke and wasnt that interesting is now a jester) i think kinger, is the "king" because like in chess, once the king is killed, the game ends. caine is the ringmaster controlling everything..... i believe kinger is actually abel, caine is the ringmaster because he wanted to be in control, but he cant just kill abel, the game would end that way... the code or game relys on the king to be alive to be playable. so caine "killed" abel by making him insane. (cuz as we have learned, caine actually does have the ability to control your mind. ) and therefore, caine now has full control of the system. now as for kinger being able to summon butterflies, its because he DOES have administrative privileges, but not just admin privileges.... hes the creator, so thats why he can do it just so easily without even thinking about it, just TADAAA here take this. and its like nothing.

May

Yes, it’s certainly annoying to be honest. On one side you have people who hate him and can’t understand the reasoning for his behavior. On the other side you have people who want to excuse all his actions to fit their perspective of a completely innocent traumatized person. In reality he’s an asshole, but there are obvious reasons for why he acts in such away and while he isn’t a good person at the moment, he also isn’t what I define as a bad person incapable of redemption either.

ArcticBanana

Zooble: "You have any of that Stupid Sauce left?" Translation: "Fine, if I can't have sex then I'll just do drugs, I guess."

May

This is definitely a theory I buy into. I think a lot of people would detach themselves if placed in this position to stay sane. I mean think about it. If you were realistically transported into this game it’d be really hard to stay sane without finding some sort of coping mechanism such as detachment. I don’t think playing into the archetype is what causes abstraction. It’s more likely, or at least more realistic, that playing into an archetype is the main thing that’s preventing him from abstraction. It’s like he’s desperately trying to cling on by a thread. If you’re able to not think about reality then chances of abstraction (or going insane) would be low. But Kaufmo, I believe, seems to have abstracted due to his obsession to find a way out. He seems like he spiraled specifically because he couldn’t stop thinking about the terrifying reality. I get the feeling Jax may be self aware of this as well.

Ashizaka

That or they are confused by him (like Elijah). He hasn't surprised me once since I got a feel for the character in episode 2. Though that may say more about me than those who misunderstand idk

Ashizaka

Everyone has their own experiences and threshold for insight. I get how his complexities could be missed. I honestly think it's amazing and commendable that a show like this is able to portray a character like Jax.

The Akimbo Knight

Great great reaction, also one thing that someone on twitter mentioned on twitter with the after credits scene is the fact that Caines red and blue eyes match the cover of the Game/Book "I have no mouth and must scream" where and AI computer god takes over and tortures some people. This might further bring ideas/lore to what exactly Caine is !!

LikeCat

Sees anything IHNMaMS related and the first thing that comes to mind is AM's „Hate Speech" - That is f-ing terrifing and I love it for some reason.

The Akimbo Knight

EXACTLY, like let’s be real some of caines behavior in a way matches some of AMs behavior !!!

Cladriah

There is a saying, What you are in the dark. In the dark, we see who Kinger is. Deep down under that insanity is a kind, fatherly figure who was a loving husband and a good mentor.

PinkPonytail _Girl

I think jax's is such an Interesting character. My theory is that who ever the frog that abstracted was the last one who ever got close to jax. I have a feeling it's because when they abstracted it tore jax up so badly that he hated just feeling emotion. And it got so bad that he just decided to shut off his emotions entirely, bottle them up, do whatever to never let anyone ever make him feel the same way with his friend frog. Jax lashing out in this episode was him pushing pomni away because he started to feel again.

PinkPonytail _Girl

Idk if anyone else has pointed this out but there was a HUGE parallel between Jax and Ragatha this episode. I think they were both close to abstracting at the beginning of this ep already, however when we see ragatha start to shut down, I mean she went silent until kingler started to help her talk out her feelings in a healthy manner and she took a step back from abstraction, meanwhile Jax took a step forward to abstracting when pomni tried to help him talk out his feelings in a healthy manner and he lashed out at her and buried his feelings deeper.

Phoenix_mercury

He reminds me of that saying: hurt people, hurt people

Henkotron

You can't show us your own Highland cow and not give us a name. Hamish getting a sister/brother is a development in the reaction scene that is much more than welcome. What is the little buddy's name? Edit: Spoke too soon. Moof is great. Now no more need for Hamish to twerk!

Christopher Herrera

While kinger being an admin is a theory the obsession with bugs is because in the 2(?) episode when kinger talks about how his wife made him love bugs where as before he hated bugs

LikeCat

It was episode 3 (The Mystery of Milhald Manor), Episode 2 was The Candy Carrion Chaos.

SauceyRed

Not sure it's been mentioned here, but one of the theories is that Kinger was a developer for the Circus, since he mentioned he was a developer in the spooky mansion episode, so if that's true, it could explain why he'd have some lingering abilities within it. That's what I'm going with. My backup theory is that they all have the same abilities as Caine, but just don't know it.

SauceyRed

Didn't notice the Caine & Abel confirmation, but yeah I mean it was inevitable, think we all expected it since the first time we saw the initials

SauceyRed

32:10 I don't think it's because she got him, I think it's because of what she said

SauceyRed

I'd love a TADC FPS game, I'd play the shit out of it

SauceyRed

Oh right, forgot to actually write about this. My read of Jax is that he believes he was the cause of Ribbit's abstraction. I'm thinking something like Vex'ahlia's thing of "my love kills", but a bit different. I think he blames himself, and is afraid of anyone getting too close to him in fear of him getting attached to someone just for them to abstract because of him. As soon as he realized him and Pomni were becoming closer, he immediately started pushing her away HARD. He tried his absolute best to be the worst person in that moment. He gaslit, lied, and became obnoxious and overly aggressive, yet when it came to actually harming her (fighting back), he couldn't. He ends it with "There's nothing more to me, so please... stop looking," which I saw as him being frustrated and exhausted, and desperately asking for her to stop. I think he's had several panic attacks before, it would explain why he's always trying his best to avoid his emotions and any topic that reminds him of his friend, since that could trigger him. And all Pomni was doing was triggering him, resulting in his giving up that argument and having that panic attack afterward.

Dooba Dooba

My take on Jax is he HATES a false representation (furthered by projection), He destroys the mask as its a false happiness He despises Ragatha for her false positivity He Despises Caine for being a liar and manipulator He promotes Pomni to be more expressive and honest with what she is, her emotions, in Pomnis own words sometimes you have to be a Jerk. An extra idea: NSAF, whatever her name is idk believes Jax is corrupting Pomni, taking control of her for his own satisfaction. this is how Jax feels about Ragatha, he views her as a manipulative conniving person, esp. if you include the Mother trauma. 'validate me so i can prove her wrong' type of behavior. Is Jax a good guy? No, Definitely not a bad guy either, Is Pomni a corrupted person now because she interacting with a non-good guy? Obviously not. Jax is trying to protect himself just like everyone else (Jax-Aggression, Kingler-Reppression, Ragatha-Pleasing, Mask girl-Masking). the only one who does not have a self-defense protocol is Pomni and Maybe Zoobie? Whatever reason Jax pushes people away, whether doesnt want to be hurt by Death or believes he causes death, or actively as a means to protect his agency by not giving into anyones manipulation, positive or not.
