Despite some of the changes from The Odyssey made, this is my second favorite saga of the musical. Between the writing and the songs, it’s just really great. Speaking of, let’s discuss some of the changes. First off, the sirens were not fish-people in Greek myth. They weren’t mermaids. They were women with bird limbs. Second, the sirens were pretty much ignored; Odysseus had his men plug their ears with wax so they wouldn’t hear the sirens singing. He, however, did not plug his ears and instead had his men tie him to their mast so he would be forced to hear the song, and his begging to be released was unheard since his men had wax clogged ears. Then there’s Scylla. So, fun fact: The Odyssey is probably the oldest example of “between a rock and a hard place”, describing the choice Odysseus and his men faced. Now Scylla wasn’t in some sort of cavern, with a lair or whatnot. It was a straight, and it was shared with Charybdis. That’s the rock and a hard place: Charybdis is immovable and impassable, whereas Scylla can be passed but at the cost of six lives. The crew understood this, and they chose to sacrifice six of their own to get past her. Finally, the mutiny and subsequent punishment from Zeus. For context, Circe had given the men of Ithaca enough supplies to last a month, but once more the Winds did not favor them so they were stranded on the island of Helios, the sun god. Odysseus told his men to keep away from the cattle, and they complied right up til they ran out of food. The crew knew what the cows were, they understood what it would mean if they killed one. And they did not care. “Hunger is so heavy” indeed. Odysseus, wanting to not end up on the receiving end of a god’s wrath, snitched on his crew. He was heard by a daughter of Helios, who went to her dad, who went to Zeus. Helios presented an ultimatum: punish the crew, or suffer a world with no sun. Not much of a choice. So Zeus does what Zeus does, smote the crew, leaving Odysseus as the lone survivor.

Hint? Theirs multiple you know who's, gonna guess you mean "how do you say this name"🤣 I'm personally hyper-patient for two songs specifically there then one specific one in VS and one specific one in the last(dreading the one before it tho!)

Phoenix_mercury

Yeah for the Helios island thing, Hadestown has a line that I quote so much now especially for the, wtf that was stupid ect crowd that goes after eury "You can have your principles when you have a belly full"

Amaterasu

Oh you are in for a treat, great reaction. And let me tell you a lo of motifs are gonna be reappearing

Theking

"Whatcha gonna do about it champ?" This ones gonna hurt😅

By Homer’s own admission, the crew was full of dumbasses

I knew you'd watch Neil Animator's take on Thunderbringer, it's the one they're best known for! In fact that animatic was the one that introduced me to Epic the Musical! I definitely recommend checking our AnniFlamma's interpretations of Thunderbringer and Ruthlessness when you get the chance though cause they make a lot of creative choices that I think fit the songs perfectly. 🔎👀

I wish the Sirens got the opportunity to fucking devour Odysseus and his crew. They didn't deserve to live.

Suffering: This one is fun to see various different versions of just to see how they draw Penelope and how they either hide or toy with the fact that it's a siren. It's always fun to see people react to this right after Monster because it's such tonal whiplash, which happens a lot when you go from the end of one Act into the beginning of the other. Different Beast: Another that's fun to see all the different siren designs if you get the opportunity. But yeah, no we've actively chosen a route here and it's not pretty. While I'm all for killing the sirens because, yeah, they'd just move on to the next group of sailors, I'm also just like kill them. There's no need to overkill it by making them drown after cutting off their tails. Bro. Talk about extra work. Scylla: Ugh I love seeing everyone's interpretations of Scylla man, some people go full on horror and it's incredible. The six part harmonies for Scylla are so freakin good at adding that discord. Mutiny: Alright, so... a lot of people get so mad at Eury here after learning that he opened the wind bag, and I get it, I do. The argument is that him opening the bag got over five hundred men killed so he's actually worse than Ody but, really, no? Don't get me wrong, opening the bag and not taking Ody's word for it was a bit dumb. But he did not expect that opening the bag would lead to Poseidon killing all those men. That was never his intention. And who's to say Poseidon would have left them alone had they gotten to Ithaca. Ithaca is a port city and Athena is no longer protecting Ody. You mean to tell me Poseidon wouldn't have tried something? Again, I'm not defending Eury opening the bag, but there's a difference between that and Ody intentionally sacrificing men without their knowledge that this was what they were doing. And Poseidon wouldn't have even been after them if Ody had either killed the cyclops or not been a prideful dummy and doxxed himself. That's the point of all this, it's messy and neither side is completely clean. They're all making dumb or even wrong decisions throughout this entire musical. It's not black or white, its messy and grey. Anyway. Love the callback to not only Luck Runs Out but the Horse and the Infant. Either death by starvation or death by a god. Either way, dead. So.... yolo I guess. Thunder Bringer: Pride is the 'her' Zeus is referring to. Which is fitting He would be super suggestive and personify something like Pride. "Please don't make me do this." Not 'don't make me choose'. Ody already knew what he was going to choose, he just didn't want to be the one to pull the trigger. But alas, if he wants to get home to his wife and son... There was only ever one choice to make. I do love Neal's choice not to have Eury attack Ody with the rest of the crew. I'm a sucker for when the animators make that decision. Also, something to note. While Neal's animatic is incredible, the crew and Ody are supposed to be on a ship during this song and at the end Zeus destroys the ship while he kills the crew and Ody falls into the water. Regardless, we started with 600 men. Now there's only 1. See ya next saga! One of my top three!

“Fun” fact: Throughout the musical, the only “character-titled” tracks we encounter are naming monsters? “Polyphemus”, “scylla”… 👀

You just know she’s going to instantly hate him and it’s going to be entertaining to watch

Theking

Oh ABSOLUTELY

Spyko

that Scyla design is so banger, terrifying, fitting and I like the uses of murray because they are famously ambush predator that hide in rocky crevasses before jumping on anything that passes by, perfect fit for Scyla In the original story Ody was the only one spared because he was the only one who didn't attack the cows (apparently the only one who've learned to be suspicious of conveniently placed cattle after the cyclope lol) but here the idea of Zeus making him chose was so good

WishingEel

SO happy that you caught on to the sacrificing the 6 men thing right away; a lot of reactors don't connect those dots with the 6 torches and how Odysseus acted through that whole ordeal, plus Eurylochus's reaction afterward. One thing which I don't think you mentioned was that when Odysseus told Eurylochus to "light up 6 torches," he A) expected Eurylochus to be one of the torch-bearers and therefore die (which is why he didn't lash out when Eurylochus told him he opened the wind bag) B) had Eurylochus unknowingly choose the sacrifices The only reason Eurylochus didn't get eaten was because he dropped his torch trying to save someone, and another crew member picked it up (which I think is also in the canon animatic for this scene, not just in Gigi's).

WishingEel

I'm not going to make any big stance about "Odysseus was right" or "Eurylochus was right," my main take from all of this is that everyone made mistakes and the decisions they made were very human (I'm not here to argue if any decisions were particularly Right or Wrong). My personal opinion is that Eurylochus wasn't "dumb" for doing what he did though, and that he knew full well what could have happened. He was literally out of options at that point and would rather die by a god's wrath (maybe painful but also quick) than by starvation (slow and agonizing). That line where he says, "Ody, we're never gonna get to make home, you know it's true" always gets me, especially with Riley G's animatic and the way they draw expressions. I think Eurylochus only started to care to try again when he saw that Odysseus, despite being betrayed and hurt, still fought to get them all out of there (only to be hit with the "I know"). Someone else said it better but Odysseus and Eurylochus's tragedy was that their character arcs happened parallel to each other but at staggered times, so they were always doomed to clash somehow, through their decisions and their ideologies.

Alexis Cardillo

My fave from this saga is Scyla it's such a dark banger and I can listen to Scyla's part over and over. And yeah you picked up that the who's holding a torch gets sacrificed and yeah Odyssey told Eurylochus so in that moment he had intended for him to one of the sacrifices after immediately learning that Eurylochous was the one that opened the windbag.

Zora Brightwood

Next is the wisdom saga! That saga is like Top 3 for me! So excited for Elijah to react to it.

NamelessSoul

The "throw their bodies back in the water- let them drown" is SO dark, he truly leaned into the monster. The reappearing motifs are one of my favorite things about this music, the writing is impeccable!!

Rixec2

Eurylochus posed "If you want all the power, you must carry all the blame." Yet, when he killed the cow, he instantly deferred to Odysseus, wanting him to be in charge again, and when the time came for someone to be punished for killing the cows, he didn't want the blame for the power he wielded. Odysseus' actions with Scylla are questionable, but it was the better of two choices, as the other would have led to certain death for all.

John Crane

I have no idea why, but I feel more bad for the Sirens than any other character(s) in The Odyssey. They’re just animals trying to survive (like Scylla) and are all murdered for it. I know they planned on killing the crew, but they could have just thrown them back in the water after they were done with interrogating them. It’s like punishing a cat for trying to kill a mouse
