MN takes place about 20-ish years after the end of VM (likely S5)

Dragon0921

4:30 - Killing her to keep her quiet and out of Trent's hair so the King can use the Beacon for the war. 😑 Also, though this is a morbid moment...FUN FACT - The character's name is Tasha, named after the showrunner and writer of the animated series, Tasha Huo! 19:53 - DING DING DING! That is in fact Mulan's VA, Ming-Na Wen! 20:19 - Now all we need is a bow for Beau's bo! 27:35 - Though it hasn't been stated in the show, the campaign takes place 20 years after the events of the Vox Machina campaign! 30:25 - The INVULNERABLE Vagrant. lol 32:07 - Easy to miss, but on the display on the right side of the door you can see small dolls of Zahra and Kashaw, Vox Machina's "frenemies" from the Slayer's Take! 40:00 - idk if you missed the detail, but because she has that disease where her former live's memories are bleeding out, she's being executed outside of the Luxon's range to essentially die permanently as a ritualistic "mercy killing". That was the whole reason Essek stole the Beacon and studied it to find a cure. 40:30 - And now we witness the hypocrisy of the Bright Queen, who will most likely avoid her OWN execution given her position. 👀 47:00 - ...So...in the campaign...it wasn't a CAT she accidentally ate...it was a baby. AGAIN, she didnt know it was a baby at the time because it was chopped up for a stew, but yeah I can understand why they changed it for the animated series. lol 50:35 - Here we're introduced to an important character from the 3rd campaign, the minotaur looking gentleman on the left! His name is Braius and that's all I'm going to say in case we get an animated series based on Bell's Hells (the 3rd campaign) in the future. One small detail I will say is that when this moment happened in the campaign, Nott and Jester vandalized the temple of a different god, The Platinum Dragon, instead of the Dawnfather's temple in this show.

This comes from someone who just finished C2 like 2 days ago (no spoilers) - While I know everybody's stories, they give them more depth here. Especially Molly's... I know his story from the Campaign (the general progression will - likely - stay the same) but THIS is a um... Blank slate if you will... An empty canvas for everything to unfold same yet differently a little. (fellow Critters know what I mean)

Dreanner95

The specific situation between Beau and that woman didn't happen in the campaign. But Beau being a lesbian who flirts with a lot of woman is a big part of the campaign. And because they started Beau off with a much more clear goal in mind, it wouldn't have made sense for her to act like this in the show. So they gave her a hot buff woman to make out with so that all show watchers know that Beau is a lesbian.

Tbf every women (exept ONE) she kissed/ had a passionate night with left after said passionate night (the charm of them not being NPCs but quest stars)

Nott: Can I blow something up... Critters (at least me): *Scared Firbolg noises*

The moment Vess said „show me Aeor" I got chills... Not to mention everything that happened AFTER that

Popped in to drop this answer. Glad someone beat me to it. Yup, ~20 after the eventual finale of LoVM

--This is just my thoughts, I'm gonna rant a little, everyone has their own opinions, these are just my thoughts on the matter with the animation compared to the actual campaign, I don't believe there is a wrong opinion on this, it's just my individual perspective is all-- --Alright, they are changing the way the Mighty Nein interacts with certain people and the way certain events happen, if I remember correctly, it has been several years, but in the actual campaign they didn't execute a member of the Soul and the Bright Queen didn't execute one of her generals like that. --And like with Pumat Sol, it was the whole party that interacted with him on their first meeting in the campaign and not just Caleb(Bren), you can condense the story down and still be faithful to the original instead of changing how things went down, if other anime/cartoons can do this with less money, Critical Role can as well, I know anime can sometime differ from how their manga is and how manga can be different from light novels but they at least stay faithful a majority of the time to each other, right now just like with Vox Machina, Mighty Nein is starting to change way more than it should, because certain interactions as a group in the campaign was very important. --Also, if I remember correctly Dierta, Essek's mother, did not have any role in the campaign other than being mentioned a few times after the group asked about Essek's past a little and that was it, oh and in the campaign her fate is a little different, also with Essek's general friend Verrat, he is an original character for the animation, does not show up in the campaign. --Again sorry for my rant everyone I had to get all that out, it just irks me when they make drastic changes to a story, I get small changes here and there and that's fine, but sometimes things don't need changing, sorry if all this seems jumbled, I'm bad with putting my thoughts together, and remember, this is just my take on all this, I'm perfectly fine with other people thinking differently.

L Frances

Yeah, you're definitely getting the nuance of Essek's story. He is in a position that highlights the serious flaws of his society - killing the infirm beyond the reach of reincarnation, tying their closest loved ones into the traumatizing death ritual, even *when* they're being reincarnated - and he wants to be the one to change that, but he did so at his most desperate, not his most collected. And now he's placed himself as a close confidant of a hypocritical queen who just had his mom killed for a disease *she* currently has. There's gonna be some messed up drama there. Vess DeRogna is fun, cause she doesn't outwardly appear hostile or conniving, but that makes her more dangerous. We've thought all this time that she might be this useful ally, and she may still be, but it's also possible she's an even worse big bad in the brewing. She's just biding her time. Also, with Jester, we still don't know if she necessarily gets her powers *from* the Traveler, or if the Traveler was just something she made up to give a reason for her mysterious powers.

LikeCat

About the Pumat thing it wasn't entire party... It was Caleb, Beau, Molly I think... Not everyone, but a kind of 50/50-ish

Solus

It has been several years, I just know it wasn't just Caleb, I admit that

BlueEyedRaven

Poor Beau... Cock-blocked by her own pits.

og.monstr

You might as well call this entire series "Big Muscle Mommies". Oh the agony... 😆

SauceyRed

You skipped over/didn't notice it in the credits, but yeah Pumat Sol (at the Invulnerable Vagrant) was voiced by Matt!

The way I see Essek is complicated. One aspect for clarity, the disorder his mother had is one that the Kryn execute without allowing their souls to reincarnate. Because the problem isnt with the body, but the soul that has lived too long. I personally have no issue with assisted suicide and helping a love one end their suffering. But I do have a issue with the message his mother and queen were trying to do. Essek already rejected the religion for valid reasons and they try to use his mother's death to convert him to the religion? Yea no. I have experienced that, religion using people's trauma and grief as a recruiting oppurtunity. And that is messed up. Essek deciding to go full dark after that makes sense to me.

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

Fun Fact: "Verrat" (the green fellow who got his head chopped off) is German for "betrayed". According to Sam, the writers felt it was a bit too on-the-nose given what happens to him, but they agreed to use it as a placeholder name until they came up with a better one to use in the series. Then they forgot...

Suplee215

At least thats the campaign timeline. Its unclear if thats also the animated timeline but probably. I can it being somewhat altered to being only 5 or 10 years and not really changing anything.

Jonathan Smith

Tim McGraw is a country music star. Songs include Indian Outlaw and Don't Take the Girl. Ivanna Sakhno was most recently known for the Ahsoka series playing Shin Hati.

Ryan

Mercer came up with all this backstory for Essek during the campaign, but it never progressed in a way that allowed him to use a lot of it, so this is him taking the chance to get it out there.

Ryan

The crew has said they killed off Gustav despite him surviving in the campaign because he never showed up again anyway, even on the sidequest to repay his debt. And it gives Molly a lot more emotion to work with.

Chet Bliese

Smelling too bad for a back-alley hookup. Impressive

Tall Geeky & Cool

Exactly, this. Matt mentioned in the post-C2 wrap-up that everything we see now with Dierta (except for maybe Essek being the one to stab her) happened in the background of the campaign, but M9 either never asked or rolled low on insight checks and never got the details.

Christopher Malone

having watched the entire season... we have not hit the E26 threshold but I firmly expect to get there next season... hopefully not as the finale but again I want... [the following has been redacted per E26 spoiler protocal]

Solus

That's perfectly fine, but in the lore unless it has been retconned since, Essek's mother is alive or the soul should technically be alive because the Kryn Dynasty had more than one beacon so her soul should have gone into one of the beacons to be reborn, the show makes it seem like they had one and only one unless I missed a conversation that said they had more, I am just giving my perspective on the matter between the show and campaign nothing more, just like with some changes they did with Vox Machina, there are things that I like and things I don't like that was changed, nothing more.

David Johnson

Not just like Molly's book, it is Molly's book. Remember the cat lady said that the magician he had hired for the ritual ran off with it? Well, now we know who he'd hired.

Natasha Grimm

Essek is honestly a beautifully nuanced character. Like, yeah, he's been doing some bad and stupid things for relatively selfish reasons, but at the same time it's easy to see things from his point of view. It's perfectly natural for a child to want to save their parent, and it makes sense that someone like Ikithon would be able to manipulate that desire and desperation. He's also not wrong that the religion his culture is trying to push on him is, quite frankly, pretty messed up. Honestly, if the religion I was told to follow forced me to kill my own mother while telling me it was an honor to do so, I, too, would want to burn the whole damn thing to the ground

Dragon0921

I agree...buuuuut its also going to be very hard to root for a guy who betrayed his closest, honorable friend, had him branded a traitor and executed with no hope of reincarnation. lol

Anthurak

Good to know I wasn't the only one who thought Essek's mom and the Bright Queen had... certain vibes XD

Anthurak

Tackling Caleb last episode to save him coming back to bite her (remember Nott's warning about hugging him in ep5?) XD

jellybrigades

I’m loving Essek. This man is so petty. He blamed Verrat for his mother’s secret coming out, so he had Verrat take the fall. Justice (revenge) to counter injustice (his mother dying). The Bright Queen didn’t seem surprised by the Typhros, so that makes me think she’s been sick for a while. That would mean their queen, the one who carries out the executions of people inflicted with Typhros and says it’s all in the name of the Luxon, has hidden her illness. She’d let others die for their faith but not herself.

RiekerVerse

the ONLY grace i'd give her for her hypocrisy is that her people are currently in very uncertain times and losing their leader would be devastating. that being said, if she was stugling with typhros before the beacon was stolen, there is no excuse, and she should practice what she preaches

RiekerVerse

idk fam if i could live forever i'd probaby try dating my bestie for a life just to see what happens XD

Suplee215

I dont think the religion in and of itself is fucked up. I think his disagreement with it is fair. But who better to help ease a person's suffering than a love one? And that is what Essek is doing. Now its fair fornthat to not be for him and he should for sure have the choice. But assisted suicide being seen as a ritual ceremony and honor among a religion is pretty neat to see. My issue is how both his mother and the queen use his mothers death as a way to motivate him to join the religion and hold him to moral standards of the religion. Also the idea of the religion causing people to be more obedient to the queen is icky but thats just a problem with monarchy in general.

K0ppar

They're all in Zadash not just Jester

K0ppar

Also Essek's mother's soul was removed from consecration, it was part of the punishment forr having Typhros, even if they had the relic they wouldn't have let it enter the beacon

Aaron Grant

If I'm not mistaken I believe this is 20 years after vox machina it's the same world just a different continent

Suplee215

To call it a "punishment" is unfair. That is what they do to people with Typhros. Which continues after reincarnation. What is more of a punishment, to continue letting people get reincarnated with Typhros being unable to tell the difference between their lives or to give them a final death and let them move on?and this isnt even speculating how one person with Typhros could effect the beacon itself or other souls in there. The queen made it clear they view the execution with the utmost respect and it isnt a banishment or excommunication.

Tristan Haller

To be fair to the Kryn, what Essek calls 'ritualistic killings' , they would characterize as euthanasia; in most cases the 'victim' is, objectively, going to come back and live a new life, and even in Dierta's case, where the nature of her disease means that further reincarnation only makes it worse, and they mandate permanent death, it's pretty clear both she and the Bright Queen genuinely view this as a way to let her pass with dignity. On the other hand, it's definitely not an *accident* that the Kryn's religious observances have the aesthetics of the kind of dark cult that would normally be your standard issue enemy in a fantasy story; that tension is important.

Arashi

Recall that when Cree was talking about the ritual that 'Lucian' was performing, that after 'something went wrong' the (female) wizard that was helping him took off with his book. Tim McGraw is or was a fairly big name country singer in the later 90's. Kind of neat to see him do Voice work.

beans

The Mighty Nein campaign is 20 years after the end of the Vox Machina campaign, on a seperate continent.

ELS_Art

Essek’s mother was never gonna be allowed to be reincarnated due to her Typhros. The Dynasty does not allow those with “damaged” souls reincarnate.

Kiki Bee

ALL the clues and you finally pick up that its the same world xD first episode someone says "as dandy as a de Rolo", at the carnival there are plushies of Pike, Grog, Percy and Trinket. A later episode (I cannot recall which) there are guards talking a group of dragons (the chroma conclave) and Emon. And residuum is harvested in Whitstone, and the crystal imbedded into the voltstruckers' arms. The dead goldfish is a nod to a hilarious Keyleth moment in C1 that didn't make it to tLoVM

LikeCat

It was Molly saying it (which is perfect) after bumping into Beau

Dragon0921

I think she knew it was the same world, just not when it takes places. She definitely missed the de Rolo comment and residuum and probably just assumed the game prizes were just fun Easter eggs.

Dragon0921

Less a punishment, more a mercy killing.

Gabi

I'm so happy you now know that Beau is indeed a girl kisser. I was hoping this day would come soon because MY GOD was it so hard for me not to say shit about it. The best way to describe Essek is that he is the embodiment of "high intelligence, low wisdom." I'm so sad the season has already ended, I want MORE! Enjoyed the reaction as always, and can't wait for the season finale reaction! P.S. Mighty Nein takes place 20 years after Vox Machina. Same world, but on a different continent :)

RenaissanceM

Lol honestly the alleyway scene, in addition to being hilarious, was probably one of the most realistic romantic interactions in all of fantasy. 🤣 Not to be crass, but as someone that has been both the smeller and the smelly, do yourself and your partner the courtesy of having a shower before any fun begins. 😂👍

Chris Marchand

So... couple of things (Not sure if they would be considered spoilers please feel free to edit delete if this info is out of line... it's more world state building stuff that I'm not sure they are going to cover/go into in the Animated Series): Relationship to Legend of Vox Machina: Yes, same world (Exandria). There is 20-25 year gap between the end of VM's story and the MN's story. Molly's Magic: Molly is a custom class invented by Matt Mercer, and his type of magic is call Hemocraft (literally Blood Magic).

Anzac-A1

The vimeo link in broken.

Lifa

Yeah, I can't find the page ;(

Anzac-A1

Must've just happened, since no one else has mentioned it.

Robin Jansson

I can still acess the reaction. Is it affecting certian people?

Rain

I can't play the video, it keeps saying there's a error

WolfieOo

Are you using firefox to watch it? or a vpn? I'm having the same sort of issue, and haven't been able to watch the last 4 reactions. But i got Chrome and it works on there. Not sure why.

Rixec2

Yeah, Mighty Nein takes place 20 years after Vox Machina, so Scanlan's book is real. And all the plushies from the carnival were also real, as they were based on the realm's heroes.

POMMERA Pierre-Emmanuel
