LET’S GOOOO!!! Also introduction to one of my favorite characters, the Curious Cat :3

Taigan

NEXT WEEK! NEXT WEEK! NEXT WEEK! NEXT WEEK! 🥳🤩

Pain

NEXT WEEEKKKK COME ALREADY!!!!!!!

Yannara Negre

I was on F5 bottom waiting for this moment.

Liam Gradwell

One more week! Just one more week! ❤️🤍🖤💛

Suplee215

I see the ever after right after the dramatic ending of v8 very similiar to v4 and 5. You have this dramatic, world altering moment with character deaths and everything to where the main characters and everyone else are changed and traumatized and everything snd the show takes time to explore the characters through separation. With v4/5 its woth separation of the team and seeing who they are without the others and with v9 it separates the team from everyone else to see who they are without the world.

Hollyhock

I'll save the rest of the reaction for after work but i watched up to and including the intro and yeah could you imagine how unimaginably hype it was when i got to see the rwby VAs at a panel and they introduced the cast with the room going dark and the v9 intro song playing? The v9 intro will always be my fave i think. It's fire ❤️‍🔥

LikeCat

Holy shit... The Curious Cat is voiced by Robbie Daymond. From freaky cat to wulf(eric) (Yes THAT is how we spell his name - there is a silent „e" there) - I am currently pausing on my C4 catch-up and now THIS... What up with this guy and ghostly animals?

Rando

I hope she is not intimidated by the episode lengths and still watches 2 next week!

Symbolic Remnant

Today on RWBY in Not Wonderland: Rainbow smoke makes Ruby choke. And WBY learns what it’s like to be action figures.

Crow

I’ve been waiting for so long!!

Crow

EVERYONE READY FOR NEXT WEEK!!!!!

BGTitan

Ep 3: Weiss’s little eye twitch when the Prince is yelling at her is everything to me. Girl, same. I just love the set piece of the chessboard fight. I also just love Checkmate playing during the fight. Also the way Weiss summons Nevermore wings and then they pull what is basically an updated callback to the Nevermore fight back in V1. Yang using the Knight’s sword? God, it’s all so good what the hell. Looks like Neo’s semblance also got a bit of an upgrade. That’s not good. In fact, probably gonna be a problem. The Cat is voiced by Robbie Daymond who is ridiculously talented, appearing in a couple of my favorite games (Persona 5 and Hi-Fi Rush). And like Little, the Cat also goes by They/Them pronouns. Ep 4: The final scene with the girls is a callback to their conversation back in V2 around the campfire at Mountain Glenn. Back then, Oobleck had gotten WBY to really question what their goals were and they all were still unsure of their roles, outside of Ruby who “knew who she wanted to be.” Now WBY are the ones that can proudly declare themselves to be Huntresses while Ruby has lost sight of who she is and who she wants to be. So good. Cool to see all the V1-3 character models of the girls again in Maya. We got to see them in the V5 character shorts but love that they’re getting more use. Also, love that Curious is being used to make some meta comments. Jabbing at the fact that the one girl they briefly introduced back in V3 never appeared again after that scene. Commenting on how there’s so many characters to keep track of. Calling out how putting a city in the sky was a horrible idea. Love some fun meta humor and writers that aren’t afraid to poke fun at themselves. I cannot wait for next time. It's gonna be so good! Hehe.

Enchanted_Echo

It's important to note the reason that the episodes seem longer and grasping the 20 minute mark is because this time with the episodes you have, you actually have the Rooster Teeth Intro, The Volume Intro, and the episodes end credits, where as mostly before, you didn't have that luxury. So now that you do have them, the episodes are going to be longer than before. With that being the case, you'll run into that with a few more episodes down the road (just like the finales with their 4-5 minute credits extending the episode) and as I don't know if you'll do 5 & 6 together or seperate because of their length and how they are (I personally would watch 6 by it's self for reasons) but if you don't I just have one thing to say...............FNDM and NSAF's BATTLE STATIONS QUICKLY!!!

ling

next week surely should be an interesting reaction :) :) :) :)

Lunar Goddess

im so excited for next weeks episodes

DarkDragon77

Here we go people, one more week and the event that went down in RWBY fandom history will be upon us again

The Laughing Man

I have a feeling that next week's reaction will be posted a little early. She will be way too amped up to wait a full week lol

Karel Hill

excited-penny.gif for next week.

Artificial Wench

Ep 4 is a followup to the Mountain Glen episodes from Vol2 where Dr Oobleck asks everyone but ruby about why they want to be a Huntress. Here we See how the girls are changed and how sure they are of why they are a Huntress except for Ruby who wasn't asked why in Vol 2 because it was so obvious why she wanted to be a Huntress but now she is unsure. Ep 6 is almost 21 minutes and you would probably want to watch that one by itself, many people are awaiting that reaction but it's going to be a long one, big lore dump and important things happen. It would be best if you did 8 and 9 together because of the cliffhanger at the end of 8 or not and experience how things were for us who watched the initial release and had to wait a week between .

Dreanner95

I do think there are some flaws (mostly because of the cuts that needed to be made in later episodes) but overall Volume 9 probably is my second favorite Volume of RWBY after Volume 8. But I also get that not everyone feels that way.

Flufux

Yes, you did notice that the Curious Cat is referred to by they/them pronouns, but did you also catch that the same is true for Little as well? Which then again makes sense considering that voice actors for Ruby and Tyrian are both non-binary as well.

Adrian ruiz martinez

Episode 4: you had rwby but ever had rwby on Druuuuuuugssss!!!

Potato

Episode 6 is just a few seconds over 20 minutes i dont think that counts its not like its 21 even

Evil Queen

Weiss has some of the best character development honestly. Also next week!! So freaking hype!!!! ❤️🤍🖤💛

LikeCat

I still remember when E4 aired and Curious THE line about Celia Celine (?)- the girl from V3. Because of a certain RWBY content creator, Arnold (a.k.a. Murderofbirds)... He defends that one-off character to heart... So seeing him be „included" like that was fun.

Dreanner95

I don't know when or how you decide about which episodes you react to but my personal recommendation would be to react to both Episode 5 and 6 with the understanding that it will be likely a longer video (also maybe don't start a new reaction series since you finished Mighty Nein). Both episodes have some moments that you will likely talk about, knowing what kind of reactor you are.

Phoenix_mercury

All afterans(probably spelled wrong ngl) are they/them iirc

Dreanner95

I also really love Robbie Daymond. He also started appearing on Critical Role during the time Volume 9 of RWBY aired. Dorian and Curious are...two very different characters.

Janice Marie Audio

“This volume is so silly, I love it!” Yeah, let’s see if you still feel that way by the end

.

5 is only 16 min so I think she'll watch both 5 and 6 next week.

.

Good point!

SportySpice

The “checkmate” fight is so much fun. You can tell they are trying to harness that early RWBY feel. The first four episodes slow-drip the rules and conceit of the Ever After very well. That is indeed Robbie! Good catch. He’s so good this volume. I have mixed feelings about WBY’s big triumphant speeches to their past selves. I was very “fuck yeah!” In the moment, but it’s also a bit disappointing since these are all speeches they could have given 3 volumes ago. So for the character introspection volume, I’m a little disappointed that is all the writers have to say with those three (e.g., they’ve already completed their character arcs and have been sitting still for a few volumes). There’s so much more to do with them. I get the writers were setting up a contrast with Ruby though. (It’s fine - it’s not up to the writers to guess at the audience’s expectations; they have their own story to tell. Just my own personal disappointment). This moment does inverse V2/Mountain Glenn moment, where WBY were unsure why they wanted to be Huntresses, while Ruby wasnt asked given how “certain” she seemed. Now the script is flipped. Ruby’s struggle is very internal.

Flufux

I'm pretty sure both the Red Prince and the Herbalist were given male pronouns though.

Chris Spigelmyer

Lol oh yeah I would definitely recommend watching both episodes next week cause they go together sooooo well.

CrowOfAFeather

"They all speak when I try to cheer!" No no no, other way around. :P Sadly, the other people who fell from Cinder's blast were confirmed dead. Edit: so after some consideration I decided to remove my Neo-Hate from the comment and leave it be for another time. It was inappropriate of me, but my stance about her hasn't changed. What I will say however is that the cast sections in the credits are there for a reason. I know you speed through them, but it's better than to look up voiceactors mid-episode and risk potentially stumble upon spoilers. There's still a lot left of this volume. But yes, correct. Ruby has always been the one to inspire others, but it's taking a toll on her now and it shows. Rusted Knight, not white knight lol. Can't wait for next week as always.

Andy

"Blaaaake, it's your turn" is so them as new parents someday

Rupert Anderson Jr

The end of episode 3: Neo gang rise up! The end of episode 4: The Curious Cat says no to drugs!

Taigan

Elijah, For the love of all that is good and pure, DO NOT look up voice actors during next week’s episode. Wait until it’s over, or you will majorly spoil a reveal.

CB Jones

An easily miss-able detail in the Herbalist scenes is that these are not infact their Beacon-selves. They're pre-Beacon, evidenced most clearly by Weiss not having her scar. It's why Weiss sounds more hopeful than Vol1, she's yet to have her own father throw her into a potentially lethal match with a live and dangerous grimm just to prove herself, and why Blake sounds deader than ever, she doesn't even have the hope that Beacon gave her yet, she's still stuck trying to survive Adam. And the thing that might be nagging you about the Cat's appearance is that unlike everything else in the animation engine they don't have an outline, which apparently was a significant challenge to acheive after designing the whole system to have those outlines but gives the cat both a not-quite-right feel while also making them feel more incooperated into the fabric of the world than any other creature.

Nichelle Vasquez

Hopefully so lmao but yeah we'll see, in any case it's what elijah's been hoping to witness since v1

Nichelle Vasquez

Never been so awake so early just to watch my rwbylijah fridays. I know we've only just started with V9 but already i'm excited for elijah to react to the spin-offs and maybe some soundtracks while we wait for V10.

ActualBampot

If the schedule lines up the way I think it will, then I have waited 9 Volumes and 110 episodes to say this in my best Ambrosious impression: In episode 6: "DO NOT PAUSE."

Nichelle Vasquez

I thought the same lmao, domestic bees canon

CB Jones

It's also important to note that the past version's observations and hopes are a mix of what they themselves believe/ have believed and input from (maybe) the Herbalist (or the leaves... jk, unless?). Importantly they don't come from a "word of god" style narrator or from eachother. When Ruby hears that everyone's relying on her and she needs to support them no matter how tired she is it's because SHE believes that. Not because it's what the others think and definitely not because the show wants you to think that's true, Ruby having a toxic idea of what leadership means and how that has erroded her is a pretty central theme to this volume.

RetroBeastto

Awww it’s cute that you think this volume is silly. Just you wait

Ryan

What was it Blake said to Ruby way back in volume one? "Unfortunately, the real world isn't the same as a fairy tale..." That blush makes me think Blake is a cat most bi-curious... The "what are you?" "I am a huntress!" moments feel like an echo of Dr Ooblek asking them why they want to be a huntress back in volume two. They've all grown so much ... except for Ruby. It feels like she has always been wearing the mask of a huntress, of a leader. And the mask has fallen, and now she doesn't recognize the girl in the mirror. All the other comments hyping up next week. I guess that will be the episode where we discover Jaune is not actually a natural blond?

bowen

mod here folks remember please dont spoil or heavily hint on what going to happen in the show

CosmicTransmtation

Please do us all a favor and stop looking up voice actors for the rest of the season. Also, I know pausing is your thing but it really feels like you ruin some of the show's more dramatic moments by pausing every five seconds. Maybe it's better to finish the scene before going back and analyzing.

Tammy Ragsdale

If you couldn't tell by my PFP, I, too, love that shot of Yang. The fight is a lot of fun to break down. The song is a bop with really on the nose lyrics. Blake is trying to get to Yang, who is just starting to get ganged up on so they can team up when she gets punched back...funny out of all the foes they've fought, it's these near mindless game pieces that figure out you need to get these two separated to have a chance at winning. Blake running out of Ammo is a nice bit of continuity, actually. She may have more on her, but she didn't realize she'd need to reload yet, because she doesn't know Weiss took some shots at Cinder with it. She'd already fallen. Another good bit of continuity. Weiss said she was low on dust. So, she starts out just using her sword and fencing skills. When Ruby rallies them, she pulls out the glyphs. Blake uses the gravity glyphs to walk upside down, so she can swipe a few of the game pieces off of Yang and make it easier for her to throw the rest off. The cat is certainly influencing people. It's kind of their thing. Whether it's good, bad or neutral remains to be seen. I like the affirmations that WBY know who they are. I get the argument that they have already had this growth, and it wasn't necessary for them. But it's not there for them. It's there to contrast Ruby's inner turmoil. She doesn't really know the answer to "What are you?" right now. They do. The opposite of what happened in Volume 2 when they didn't know what they wanted and for Ruby it was so obvious she never even got asked the question. Next week is going to be fun.

Ryan

It weirds me out how people keep telling Elijah to stop pausing. Would you tell a cat not to purr?

Potato

20 minute epsiodes are not 20 minutes please dont split it into 2 reactions just cause episode 6 is 20.50! XDD credits and intro take up about 2 so its always atleast 2 less minutes than what it says it is If its split thats the biggest drag of the century XD

MelAsia13

in ep 6 you have to watch the intro because something change in it. I can't wait for you to react to watch that ep bc it's my fav for multiples reason

Luminaxtea

The Chess fight is one of my favorite fights in the whole show. There's so many cool moments like Yang breaking free from the dog pile, Yang USING Weiss' summon as a weapon, the angel shot of Weiss, the song that plays 'Checkmate' is fire, plus the continuity of Weiss using Blake's bullets in V8 against Cinder translated into Blake having less than she expected to have hence her confusion (also supports the thought that Weiss gave them a tl;dr instead of a comprehensive rundown of what happened after they fell).

Shelley Courchaine (Core Shane)

NGL. I have been waiting on Elijah's reaction to the Angel shot since Vol. 1. I thought for sure that was going to be the thumbnail.

Rythen Eugea

NEXT WEEK YALL I CANT WAIT!!!!

REACTION DROP ON ME BIRTHDAY, THANK YOU

RenaissanceM

One more week……. If you know, you know……….

Ray Knight

We get it, you hate Neo. People are going to love characters you hate, and hate characters you love. These are Elijah's reactions, this is Elijah's Patreon, Elijah's work, and I can only imagine how disheartening and frustrating it must be to see someone consistently commenting about how annoying you and your reactions are just for appreciating a villain character. Because that's what your comments have been implying for the past several reactions. I highly doubt that Elijah has been reading Patreon comments in order to minimize spoilers, but on the off chance she sees these comments at some point in time in the future, the fact that you have been consistently ragging on her for her love of Neo's character is exhausting even just for myself and I'm just a viewer of Elijah's content. Plus, Elijah has specifically said that she doesn't just love Neo for her character design so your comment about "a character just needs to be hot enough to get away with literally anything" is disingenuous and proves that your mind apparently completely shuts off due to your hatred of Neo. I'm certainly not that big of a Neo fan myself, but your comments hating her are getting tiresome.

Shelley Courchaine (Core Shane)

Okay I'm gonna make the joke. For those of us anxiously waiting for next week (if she does both Ep. 5 &6)... I feel like I've been waiting forever for that.

Red Demonica

Anyone wanna take a non-spoilery guess what next week's thumbnail is going to be? 🤣

CrowOfAFeather

I wholeheartedly agree with both points. Every time she looks up a voiceactor instead of checking the cast in the credits, I dread she's about to stumble upon spoilers.

CrowOfAFeather

Fair point, but it doesn't change that my hate for Neo is justified. I'm fully aware that you can like a villain character and still hate what they're doing, but consistently seeing people just fawn over her despite everything she had done without regret, both in the book and in the show rubs me the wrong way. The way I feel about Neo is the same way Elijah feels for Viren in Dragon Prince. Like, Neo, Cinder, and Watts killed a room full of people in Atlas, and when Neo kicks someone dying? Fawning. I for one don't get it.

RenaissanceM

The Herbalist smoke scene in episode 4 really is a special moment in the series. From the day It first premiered it has stuck with me. Each member of Team RWBY seeing where they came from versus where they are now, and being given the chance to literally go back. To be whatever they want to be. The key thing though, the reason why Weiss, Blake, and Yang are able to answer that question, is because they already have. Go back to Volume 4. Immediately after the Fall of Beacon. Yang, Weiss, and Blake all either chose or had the chance to choose to walk away from the fight. To lay down their arms. Let it go, and just lead a normal life. Whatever that means. They each had their own little arc within the larger story where they got to see what it would be like to abstain from it all, and on their own, they CHOSE to pick up the sword again and jump back into the fray. They went from wanting to be Huntresses, to CHOOSING to be Huntresses. As for Ruby…..this moment…..Hell, this entire season has brilliantly illustrated that she never stopped. From the very beginning of the series she had never once wavered from her decision to fight the forces of darkness and protect people that can’t protect themselves. Even after Beacon fell, after she lost Penny, Pyrrha, and her entire team….she just found a new team and kept on going. Because that’s what the huntresses in the books did, right? That’s what her mother would have done, right? Well….now we see the consequences of that choice. Of a young girl that has never taken the time to rest. To grieve and mourn. To recover emotionally as much as physically. A girl who never even considered she could have a life beyond being a Huntress just like her Mother. We’re seeing Ruby reach the breaking point that Blake, Weiss, and Yang hit a long time ago……and it’s both heartbreaking as much as it is necessary.

Rythen Eugea

Both Little and the Curious Cat are they/them!

RenaissanceM

There's a point where it tips… There's a point where it breaks… There's a point where it bends… And a point we just can't take anymore…

Ko Villa

What're you talking about? It's just a boring Bridge....

LikeCat

Me sees the word „bridge" me mind: I killed my whole family I will throw you under a bridge- its just a figure of speech where Im from... Sure Sam, sure

SPS

On the level of planning. The ever after's first design was in the pre volume 1 material. Salem was made in the first 10 characters (forget which one). The arguments from the ex employees of massive vision change doesn't match the hard evidence we have.

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

I guess that would depend on whether she does two episodes in the reaction or just one

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

IIRC, Miles and Kerry have said that they were considering placing the Ever After stuff after the Fall of Beacon, but decided it was too early. Interesting to think what that would have looked like

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

Volume 9 I think is the one that benefits the most from a rewatch, as a lot of the early weirdness makes SO MUCH MORE SENSE once we know all the things we learn as the volume goes on. The scenes involving the herbalist are a perfect example: all of the "I don't understand why *you* don't understand" stuff and the interrogations from the Vol. 1 versions of RWBY take on a whole new significance the second time around

Ryan

*record scratch* *freeze frame* *Elijah halfway through falling out of her chair backwards, limbs flailing in every direction* "Yep, that's me. You're probably wondering how I got into this situation..."

defy4bees

I believe Yang's character doesn't have an "official" confirmed sexuality, as far as I know a handful of characters do, Blake is confirmed bisexual, Ilia is confirmed to be a lesbian I think the boy comment in V1 was just meant to be a joke though. A lot of people take that to mean she's interested in men, but if you watch her react to other male characters she shows little to no interest in them. My favourite is her reaction to Jinn vs her reaction to Ambrosius. It's SO funny how different her reactions are. No spoilers guys I know she doesn't read these but it's crazy how many of you are commenting about next week.

ConnorH265

I hope after v9 you watch the rwby x justice league heros and huntsmen part 1 and part 2

TheyWereMarried

Bumbleby were so damn cute in these episodes! I'm also looking forward to seeing Elijah react to 5 & 6 Yang really likes women strong enough to yeet her around in a circle and straight into their enemies.

Enchanted_Echo

I don't remember where but I believe someone said something about Yang being Pansexual I think. Don't quote me on that though as it's been a hot minute since I saw that post........

Enchanted_Echo

Checkmate (the song playing during the chess fight) is personally my favorite RWBY song with the fun imagery, angel Weiss from the nevermore (still a bit surprised that wasn't the thumbnail but I get the the favorite of Yake and Blang), the hidden meaning of the song, the fun beat and the fact with the shows use of chess imagery and symbolism throughout it's run just makes this so much of a delight and so much fun to listen to. For Neo, if you recall back last volume with Ren and hi semblance evolution.......this is Neo's. It's true that in the book she could make a never version of herself but that's something she kind of already was able to do it you go back and watch (best example is team JNOR vs Neo) it's like with Blakes shadow clone in a way and she could make objects become illusions but NOW she can make multiple and make nothing into something, that being her evolution. Also, remember you technically did see how they originally looked with the Volume 5 shorts with their original designs in the new animation, it's just been a minute and these are a wee bit better as well. It also has been a moment so I get it. During the smoke thing with team RWBY..........you may have accidentally fell for one of the "ordeals" I guess you could say/running theme for this volume of RWBY which you will get the idea of it more down the road. With next episodes you do a good job with this but I will say..........pay close attention to the background because it can be a case of blink and you'll miss it. Whatever comes next week, I think you're gonna like it, enjoy!

Enchanted_Echo

There's a line that we’ll cross.... And there’s no return.... There's a time and a place.... No bridges left to burn ... Anymore....

Enchanted_Echo

It's also fun going back to near the end of Volume 2 when Professor Oobleck asked all the girls why they wanted to be a huntress except for Ruby and jump to now, everyone had an answer for who they are and why, except for Ruby...........a mirror to back then.

CrowOfAFeather

I think she said way back that she was gonna watch Chibi after V9

Zirkumflex

The smoke scene is a bit of a callback to Volume 2 the interviews with Dr. Oobleck. But now the difference is that Yang, Blake and Weiss know why they want to be huntresses and Ruby does not anymore. Checkmate still is an absolute banger of a song and the fight is awesome. The Red Castle is what you get when you hire M.C Escher as a court architect.

supersoaker

Fun Fact: a lot of the questions from the Curious Cat are from the reactor MurderofBirds. The creators put those in as an inside joke/shoutout

supersoaker

14:12 "I will step on you" That's what she said

Sarah

i am soooo exited for next week!

SportySpice

My memory is foggy but I think she said she wanted to watch the JL movies joint w Mosco, so she won’t be able to do those til Mosco catches up.

Ruby Going Through It: The Volume

Lavender Onyxheart

don't forget the uninspired character voices jab at Weiss, cause Weiss was the very first voice acting job Kara Eberle ever had

LikeCat

I mean he (And Cal and Hunter) IS one of the biggest RWBY reactors/ content creators on Youtube... Fun fact: Cal is the reason I ship Neo and Fox. She put her wild-card ship out there in the eather a few years ago, and now Im sold and see the vision in it

Angelus Lupus

"THAT'S MY BABY!... I mean: no, villain!" OMG I had to pause until I stopped laughing!!

SportySpice

It’s kind of crazy Cal/Hunter are seen as big reactors when Elijah is pulling at least as good if not better numbers years later than they did when the volume was airing live (+ 2 years of views after the fact)

Celly

Whether by design or pure happenstance, each doubling of chapters in Volume 9 BELONG together. Perhaps less so with Chapters 1-4 (but not really). Chapters 5-6 BELONG together. Chapters 7-8 and 9-10 BELONG together. Please react to them together even if they end up a bit long. I think you will *REGRET* not doing so. And we all know negative emotions like regret will draw the Grimm ;) Celly

Bryan Forquer

I pretty much hated Neo since the beginning. She was originally created as a last minute character that Monty threw in, but they didn't have time to create a proper backstory for her or find a voice actress. Then when Neo finally shows back up in volume 6. Her only character arc is her obsession with trying to kill Ruby. Plus her reasons don't even feel valid to me. Unless Neo and Torchwick had a sexual relationship, which I seriously doubt. Then it just doesn't seem justifiable that Neo would want to kill Ruby as revenge. I honestly think the show would've been better off without Neo.

Bryan Forquer

Episode 3 is one of my favorite episodes of this volume! My most favorite episode hasn't happened yet(it's coming up soon!) Seeing Yang cheer on Blake was adorable, and Yang wielding the giant knight's sword was badass! When Yang was like "Blake it's your turn." It felt like they were parents arguing over whose turn it was to comfort their crying baby. I'm praying that Elijah doesn't watch episodes 6 and 7 back to back. Hopefully after she watches episode 6, she'll wait until the next week to do episode 7.

Mitch

110% agree with this, a lot of RWBY episodes in general seem to work better as pairs but especially volume 9.

Mitch

She definitely should, especially part 2 since it's tied to volumes 9 and 10.

Mitch

There's been lots of speculation and controversy around Yang's sexuality, especially when it comes to her remark about boys in volume 1. The official Japanese dub completely removes the line which has led some to believe that the idea of Yang being interested in men has been retconned and she is a lesbian. I personally headcanon her as a lesbian since, as you said, she never really shows any attraction to boys outside of that moment but has multiple moments of gay panic.

Kiesen

Gnawing at the bars of my enclosure because next week is THE week (barring any delays). I cannot wait. - It brings me so much joy to see you become absolutely obsessed with this show. I already have a lot of RWBY stuff but it makes me want more. - Lmao part of the reason they did the Beacon era designs in the Maya engine is because of the Justice League films. I'm not complaining though. - They definitely go wild with the visuals and colors this volume. You can thank Erin Winn for the art direction, as this was the first volume she got to really define the visuals. - Well, technically Weiss is no longer aristocracy/"royalty". With the destruction of Atlas she's basically broke. - The writers know they made the Prince insufferable, so they made his soldiers kind of endearing to off-set how annoying he is. - God I never noticed that Blake lands like a cat. I'm a sucker for them riffing on her being part cat so I'm mad at myself for not noticing. Also never noticed Yang's little arm raise. There's so many blink-and-you-miss-it moments in RWBY. - It's not a coincidence that he's cheating lmao. - I did miss Weiss using more fencing moves with Myrtenaster. Ever since they introduced summoning she's been using it more like a magic wand than a weapon. - Yang's little smirk is really doing it for me. I love seeing her so cocky. - Clamping my mouth shut so hard my teeth break. I want to say something so badly. - Curious that those eyes only appeared when Ruby says "human." Pun not intended. - CHECKMATE MY BELOVED. This is unironically one of my favorite songs (and fights!) in the entire series. Casey Lee Williams says it's inspired a lot by Caravan Palace's work and you can really hear it. Also very impressive that it took them 9 volumes to finally name a song "Checkmate" when they're always making chess references. - Weiss with wings again. They've really gotten into giving Weiss shots with those Nevermore wings. - I do love the unique look of the Curious Cat. Their lineless model is a real standout in this series even in the odd visuals of this volume. - Weiss continuing to be the funniest character in this entire series. I crack up at the "stupid sequel" joke every time no matter how many times I rewatch it. White girl being tormented forever. - Ice cream girl seeing some great possibilities in this fairy tale hell. - It's kind of comical hearing Lindsay say "Kitty!" over and over, since in one of their interviews way back when they cite that kind of nasally, child-like way of saying "Kitty!" as part of the inspiration behind the voice they do for Ruby. - They actually have a lot of nonbinary characters this volume. - All these little questions from the cat are the writers making fun of themselves. - "Yeah, but she learned her lesson in the end, right?" "I'd certainly say so." - I was personally so fucking confused by this whole exchange with the Herbalist the first time I saw it. I know that's the intention but I thought I was losing my mind. - I know this whole thing word-for-word. Which is super autistic of me but still. It's so fucking cool. Though there's a scene in this volume that I know even better. - Which, by the way, this is a parallel (and inverse) to the scene in Volume 2 where Oobleck asks them why they're a huntress. - I feel so weird hearing Arryn's original inflection for Blake because oh my god I used to talk like that (and act like that). I talk like Blake does now too but yikes does that hit harder. - I have something to say regarding the cat but I'll save it for later when we have some more context. Have fun next week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hollyhock

One of the animators said they hc Yang as pansexual but later clarified this was their personal headcanon. So it's still unconfirmed

Eddie Murphy

I agree with you. As a bisexual myself, she seems lesbian to me. Yes, there was that scene in volume one but given how she treats most men after that with disinterest and even disdain, I feel like that comment she made was either a joke, comphet, or early show weirdness/miscommunication. But given she never shows any interest in men again throughout the rest of the entire show after that episode in volume one, I feel like she's probably sapphic. Of course, there's a very good chance her sexuality never gets confirmed and it will forevermore be left up to fan interpretation.

FullmetalNinja25

Keep in mind Episode lengths factor in the Intros and Outros which you always skip that takes like 3 minutes off the runtime. The only Episodes of RWBY that are legit over 20 minutes are Episodes that are 23 and a half or more minutes, minus Volume Finales which have 5 minutes or more End Credits which factoring in the 90 second intro that's at least 7 minutes off the runtime.

Icebelle

The like happy and hopeful speeches with WBY and then it cuts to hopeless and depressed Ruby who feels like overpowered by the younger Ruby and so broken down😭 I’m so scared that Ruby is going to be like depressed, depressed and just completely break down.😰😭 Poor baby!!! Please girls help your friend plzz!😭❤️

CrowOfAFeather

The book Roman Holiday dives into their backstory before the show and they end up forming a partnership that's left sort of open to interpretation at the end. But they were basically joined by the hip. But that's about it. She does heinous things in the book too but a lot of people seem to gloss over that because her parents were shitty. Which yes, tragic, but doesn't excuse Neo's behaviour or gleeful actions throughout the entire show.

Stars CM

There has never been a single line that perfectly encapsulates a character like Weiss saying "Bitch, you don't know me" to herself.

AJ

It's always been my opinion (NOT confirmed in any way) that "Gay" as a concept is not a thing on Remnant. People have preferences, but no one seems shocked by anyone's choices. Yang and Blake seem to have no issue with "coming to terms" with their sexuality. I've always liked the idea that on Remnant, you love who you love and "comphet" is not the norm.

GeminiRosche13

To quote what Ozpin told Ruby in volume 1: “Being a team leader isn’t just a title you carry into battle, but a badge you wear constantly. If you’re not always performing at your absolute best, then what reason do you give others to follow you?” And to quote what Ruby told Jaune in volume 1: “You’re a leader now, Jaune. You’re not allowed to be a failure. You may have been a failure when you were a kid, you might have even been one the first day we met, but you can’t be one now. You know why? Because it’s not just about you anymore. You’ve got a team now. We both do. And if we fail, then we’ll just be bringing them down with us. We have to put our teammates first, and ourselves second.” She’s definitely taking all of that very much to heart now more than ever, and in a very unhealthy way.

SportySpice

I think you are confusing comphet and homophobia. Even if homophobia didnt exist, it’s very clear there is a heternorm that would feed into comphet. For instance, Weiss and Penny assume “girl talk” is talking about cute boys and painting their nails (they wouldn’t default to that with a girl they dont know unless there was a heternorm), Jaune asks Pyrrha where “the guy” is when he assumes she brought a date (again, wouldn’t assume a gender), the list goes on. It’s not necessarily insidious (it’s partly math) but it does mean characters might assume a “norm” before actually figuring it out (given many characters assume a hetero default as noted above).

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

I would have been happy if Blake dated Sun or Yang till that Weiss and Yang talk in volume 5, and since then I want the Bumblebee ship to happen and not Black-Sun, but Nlake did the same blush in volume 3 when Sun pointed at her after team Sun beat team Indigo. For some reason you didn't have any reaction to that blush. 😁

Zora Brightwood

I find it ironic that you can see Ruby smile as the leaves of the tree fly by her, and I think she hasn't smiled at all since being there. Also, I am really interested in seeing how far Elijah's love for Neo goes.

Vex Valor

All I'm saying is that Yang's mention of boys was a singular joke in season one and never once brought up again. I've made jokes about boys, too, and I'm still a lesbian. I really don't think a single joke is substantial proof she is attracted to men. Blake is definitely bisexual, though.

Azureroses

All the characters in the Ever After use they them pronouns

Andrew Hart

Can you use your power to ask Elijah to react to both Chapters 5 and 6 next week, pretty please 🙏 😂

Andrew Hart

I really hope Elijah reacts to both Chapters 5 and 6 next week. As others have said the intro and credits add to the actual runtime of the episodes making them seem longer than they are. I just have a worrying feeling that she’ll separate them. I really hope I’m wrong and we get both chapters next week, they work so well together and I feel like she’ll definitely want answers after chapter 5. (Oh and that other thing 😉)

bowen

Unless something changes the episode will be out the 16th

Zora Brightwood

I can never help but be reminded of the sapphic series Pluto when thinking of Blake's relationships. Especially the fact that Iilia had feelings for her but said nothing until it was too late. In Pluto the main character had a bf but ended up falling for a girl for the first time and her best friend who had feelings for her was heartbroken wanting to be the first girl the mc to be with but she was too late and waited too long. Really has nothing to do with this but I'm just airing out a thought.

Arashi

Elijah: "Oh... army of Neo's... where do I sign up?" And here we have the first insert background song of the volume, Checkmate. Nothing too special about it but it's a bit of a shame they cut the next verse (particularly the last two lines) from the song. "I know it's not easy, losing a match/Especially when it's a girl kicking your ass" Blake and Yang? You sure you aren't letting bias' shape your perception? They could just simply be roommates after all! What do you mean Little's always asleep? They are the most reliable of guides! We get the another hint on the issues of the volume.

Arashi

My take is that while Yang appreciates the male form, (at least the defined ones and not Juane's one :p) she is not particularly interested in doing anything with it.

GlitchedLetters

One of my favorite details is that the Ever Afterans are all nonbinary. Little, the Cat, and most of the other creatures you see are referred to with they/them pronouns. The cats questions were ironically both questions from a rather popular RWBY reactor, but also, some notorious fandom critiques and such that the writers wanted to poke fun at. I cant wait to see your reactions to the music for RWBY, the difference between Casey and their dads style is super noticeable but you can definitively tell she has rock in her blood. Thus music for this volume is one of my favorite albums. God the line from V1 Ruby to current Ruby about Salem and her mom, esp after the run in with the hound in the last season. With Maria's past, the fate of the Faunus in the hound, and the correlation of what may have happened to Summer; Ruby probably feels utterly terrified for her life added with the stress of knowing she's the only person with the ability to stop Salem. God its so suffocating. Can't wait for your reaction to next weeks episodes!!

LikeCat

I know... And I know its a strech (Im only halfway through E7 at the moment), but like Robbie wrote THE biggest backstory out anyone (it was like 7 pages or something like that) for their C4, so there could be something with Kat and Wulf other than ”Ranger and his pet"

Cinder's Apologist

congrats on picking up that this is Ruby's moment of character growth!! because yes, she hasn't had her own arc like WBY have had, and so... volume 9. also good observation about this one taking the team and the audience away from Remnant for a little while. fun fact: when v9 came out, CRWBY acknowledged that they had planned the general idea for v9 before volume ONE came out. so yeah, they absolutely had a long term plan for this story. hehehehehehehehehe gay gay homosexual gay :3 we love seeing awesome teamwork! the chess game is truly one of THE top fighting moments in RWBY, and that's saying a lot! even with Ruby literally on the sidelines, seeing just how well WBY work together is such a goddamn treat - plus we need more of Yang wielding the giant fuckoff sword. oh Neo... ohhhh Neo... yeah, everybody in the Ever After is nonbinary. or at least, gender rules aren't so rigid there. the part when the Cat is running through the various plot beats that the girls told him? and the Cat mentions Ciel from the Vytal Tournament? yeah, that part was a not so subtle nod from CRWBY about how they literally ended up with too many characters to keep track of... and thus how it led to a multitude of various characters with memorable designs or cool concepts that just never got used more than once. the trials of being a RWBY fan! oh no, definitely go inside the giant LSD mushroom. what could happen? speaking of which... I love your enthusiasm and your energy in these reactions, but not gonna lie I got to a point where I was clapping my hands and shouting "SHUT. UP. AND. LISTEN." as the girls started to talk to their "old selves." because that moment is very, VERY important in seeing how much they have grown... at least WBY, while Ruby is... yeah. and now that you've seen it, I strongly advise you to do something once you're done with v9. while moments like this are still fresh on your mind, go back and watch v1 and v2, at least the parts that you're already picking up on. because you are correct in that these are callbacks to those earlier moments, only now the girls have grown and Been Through It and those experiences have shaped them for better or worse. you did great in recognizing the bit about "the real world isn't a fairy tale / that's why we're here, to make it better" and I must advise you to revisit the campfire scene at Mountain Glenn and watch that alongside this moment with the Herbalist. note the vast differences between the girls in v2 compared to now, in every aspect.

Caitlin Whitaker

I'm not sure if this is correct but I think in the shots of the V1 version of Weiss, she doesn't have the scar on her eye

Cinder's Apologist

THANK YOU! I have a bad feeling this will come up again whenever Elijah gets around to watching Chibi which... don't get me wrong, I loved Chibi but there were moments that just don't land as well. but yeah, big big agree on Yang being a big ol lesbian and that one damn line from waaaay back in v1 DOES NOT COUNT. it's just a dumb joke that more than anything is there to set up Jaune being a dork, again, and it irks me to no end that people will still trot that stupid line out as proof that Yang is into boys when nothing else since then would suggest such a thing.

Cinder's Apologist

yep yep! it's subtle enough to miss if you don't know where to look, but I love how this came full circle even with those unhealthy implications.

BGTitan

Idk probably just some dumb Clouds or something....

Ray Knight

Oh damn, I never made that connection re: Blake's bullets and why she runs out during that fight!!! That's clever, good catch! Blake would know her weapon and ammo capacity like the back of her hand, so that totally makes sense.

Dyamalos

I think I found Sun annoying when it he was introduced because I've been trained by media that forces straight relationships when they obviously don't make any sense. It wouldn't have been the worst paring, but I certainly liked him better once it was obvious they weren't doing that.

Dyamalos

I think Yang also just likes being used as a projectile weapon

Dyamalos

Ruby also has been getting more and more on edge as the show went on. We've had moments where she starts to second guess herself and the decisions she's made that ended up going bad, especially in the last season Her seeing the identity of the hound pushed her even closer to that and assuming that is probably what happened to her mother, especially after Salem starts her fall at the end of season 7. And then at the start of this one, when nobody else is around... she collapses and starts to cry, something we've never seen her come close to doing. When she meets up with the rest, she masks as much as she can, not showing how broken she feels to the team, but not able to keep it out of her voice. After the rest of the team shows up she had the moments where the rain started, but she didn't let herself outwardly cry.

Dyamalos

>Yeah, none of the other people who fell were trained as huntresses. Outside of our main cast and Neo none of them Makes sense as none of the other people who fell were trained as hunters. Outside of our main cast and Neo few of the others that fell would have had much if any control over their aura. They likely would have died from the initial explosion, however they landed, or injuries from both with no way to heal. Where even if our main characters had been injured after landing, once they had regained some of their aura they would have started to heal before they even woke up.

Kym

The girls have come so far. The whole WBY monologue is one of my favorite scenes this season. Also, if you look back at Vol. 1, I think the whole “boys” joke was just a punchline about Jaune wearing pajamas and how awkward he was back then. I don’t think it has anything to do with Yang’s sexuality and more like it was just mocking Jaune.

Migli

how i see it, that line, although a throwaway, it almost makes yangs journeys with self discovery more relatable, and realistic, because not every lesbian understands theyre queer at 17, and despite not necessarily knowing shes queer, yang never shows real interest in any man, shes only shown rejecting their interest in her, which feels intentional, her only genuine shows of romantic interest have been towards blake, be that blushing, soft looks, etc, and we only started seeing this softer more vulnerable side of her around blake, keep in mind yang also makes that joke just before blake catches her eyes for the first time this is just my personal hc at this point but I feel like blake was yangs gay awakening yang just hasn't fully processed that yet

Vex Valor

Definitely agree with you, Migli. Homophobia may not exist in this world, but that doesn't mean heteronormativity doesn't. Yang was still young and figuring herself out. Who knows themselves at 17? I certainly didn't. I don't think Yang ever really understood romance until she met Blake. I feel this is very consistent with her writing. She was a jokester and never serious in the beginning, but she has grown since then and can be incredibly sincere.

Josiah

god damn i love your reactions! ty so much i love every week i get to log in and see you react to to two episodes. i know this week had long ones but i still love seeing the long episodes. keep up the great reactions you are amazing

Lindsay

Yang is definitely not interested in men. That comment she made in volume one was 100% a joke mocking Jaune. Barbara sounded so sarcastic in her delivery of it I really don't get when people use it as evidence to prove Yang is Bi. Also the boy band posters... Like I am fully a lesbian and have known this since I was nine and I still had boy band posters in my room. Boy bands make great music. Also two seconds after she makes that sarcastic remark about boys she spots Blake and drags her sister over to meet her so she has an excuse to talk to the pretty girl. She's only shown interest in Blake (and Jin) since volume 1 in spite of boys having flirted with her. She could have flirted back with Neptune who is apparently very hot in the RWBY universe, but she was annoyed by his flirting.

Alexis Cardillo

This volume is really great at doing the call backs to their time at Beacon to how they are now, looking back at the team’s first meeting with each other and their thoughts and convictions at Mt Glenn compared to now are pretty much reversed. Weiss, Blake, and Yang were the ones unsure and trying to figure themselves out while Ruby was so sure of herself and what she wanted, now again it’s the reverse and while it hurts to see Ruby like this in a way it was a long time coming. Okay think it’s now safe to say that Blake is confirmed to be Bi, her voice actress when asked what she and Blake have in common she said they’re both Bi. I hope you continue to what this volume in 2 episode pairings, like others have said their volume in particular works very well in pairs.

Elizabeth McLaughlin

And what makes that even more tragic in my opinion is, I don't think Ozpin meant it that way, he wasn't trying to say a good leader never makes mistakes - he even says he does earlier in the convo. I think he's trying to just say 'don't half-ass your duties, or else no one will respect you' and that still leaves rooms for honest mistakes. But, in a sense, it's been so long since he's been 'just' 15 that he didn't think how a teenager might take his statements. And so he he taught the wrong lesson, and it ended up making everything worse in the long run. Given more time at Beacon he might have been able to fix it, but well . . . Salem happened.

Vic Walker

You might need to rewatch that episode. She WASN'T mocking Jaune from the start, she was PURRING looking at multiple shirtless boys, and stopped right when Jaune appeared with his cute pijamas.

Lindsay

You can relax

SportySpice

Her point was that the show was using that to set up a joke at Jaune’s expense, and likely not to set up some piece of Yang’s characterization (the writers really did not give a damn about Yang’s character in V1 for real). And even if it was, given Yang never expresses any sentiment like that ever again in the show, hard to see how it’s irrefutable evidence of sexuality (particularly given how the show approaches Blake’s bisexuality). Either way, the writers have not confirmed Yang’s sexuality, so all’s fair so long as we’re cordial. All headcanons (other than straight) are compatible with what we’ve seen, depending on how you interpret. Throwaway joke, an assumption before she actually figured out what she’s attracted to, or real interest — any shoe fits til we get confirmation.

Remcha

Volume 9 is my favourite volume, so much so that I couldn't hold myself back and got your patreon just so I could watch these reactions early! A lot of shows always seem to have characters built to fit a specific world, but the Ever After seems to be built around what Ruby is going through and I LOVE it! An example is that WBY were shrunk and now, much like how Ruby feels herself shouldering the problems of the world, her team is quite literally sitting on her shoulders! So excited for your reactions to the rest of the volume.

Lisi Stoire

Did anyone told her that Little is also a they/them ? ^^'

Vic Walker

Idk why you think I'm not relaxed. I'm not into fighting for fictional characters, just remembering correctly about that scene because I've rematched RWBY an insane amount now, and did one more rewatch not long ago, things are very fresh on my mind. Sorry but that would be grounds for possible bisexuality or similar from her, Barbara didn't sound THAT sarcastic when talking about the boys in general, but it was indeed an opportunity to land a joke about how dislocated Jaune was back then.

Lindsay

Because you are using all caps and telling me I need to rewatch the episode. If you're not into fighting then don't because I don't want to fight for anything other than lesbian representation. I literally watched the episode before I made the comment, I am always rewatching this show. You can think what you want but the VA herself doesn't think her character is Bi. That comment was sarcastic at best and comphet at worst and more than anything Sporty Spice is right, they did not give a shit about Yang's characterization in volume 1. She has only ever flirted with or shown interest in Blake and (a female in the JL movies who I will not spoil) since that throw away joke in volume 1. We can compromise and give the up most credit to that line having anything to do with Yangs characterization and say she might have been figuring herself out in volume one. I mean she was 17. But Yang has gotten more and more butch and more and more comfortable in herself as the volumes progress and the girl is a Lesbian.

Rixec2

All of the girls' growth and acknowledgement of it is just beautiful. They are accepting the harder roads ahead because that is who they are and how they will continue to grow. It's easy to want to go back. To simpler times. But it's not gonna make things truly better. You just stagnate.

TakeOnLana

it's pronouned che-sher. please do not pronouce cheshire as chess shire. the common people suffer terribly from this grievance.

A G

That chess game fight is what set my love for Bee’s Schnees as a ship 😅 I love their dynamic and synchronization.

man-of-bvz1n3ss

So Ruby's team getting reduced in size here is a metaphor for how Ruby is LITERALLY forced to carry the entire team forward. At this point they are all completely unable to help her. Oh, I never caught how the bridges parallel the Brothers, that's awesome! Weiss mentions a "Lively Carpenter" from Alyx's story who doesn't actually appear in Volume 9, but from their name, I assume they're a reference to the Carpenter from The Walrus and the Carpenter. Note Yang trying to reassure Ruby when Ruby starts doubting whether they can still kill Salem. Yang's always there for her sister, the Cat just distracted them. There's so much foreshadowing for how the Ever After works in the Red Prince and the Herbalist's dialogue. Poor Herb- he's clearly tired of his purpose and these four Afterans who don't seem to understand basic things about the world are NOT helping. You should really pay attention to what the past versions of RWBY are saying, it is VERY important to understand. Good catch with Yang talking about "looking for something" cutting to Blake, didn't realize that.

man-of-bvz1n3ss

Not the Red Prince, and maybe not the Teapot Lady, but everyone else.

man-of-bvz1n3ss

I could hear the haughty sniff at the end of this comment

man-of-bvz1n3ss

Wait, homophobia doesn't exist in Remnant? I don't remember where that was stated.

Vex Valor

It's never depicted at all and pretty sure the cast has confirmed it before in QNA. People are still generally straight. There just isn't any homophobia if they're not.

Andrew Stackhouse

I don’t know if someone mentioned this yet, but I did notice you’ve reacted to what I think is probably the Roundtable discussion after a certain future episode with Blake & Yang’s actresses. They also did a much longer video as one of their podcasts… but regardless, the Roundtables aren’t super long but give some BTS & extra notes & facts & trivia about each episode. Even if you don’t “react to them,” they’re really good. For episode 4, I remember Ruby’s actress mentioning that the smoke scene was originally MUCH meaner / snarkier & they ended up toning it down because it was just too much for how low Ruby already is. Also. Just joined after the end of season 8 because honestly I’ve watched enough of your videos I felt I needed / wanted to join for at least a month or so. I also just really wanted to see Season 9. I appreciate all the seasons, but i especially like 9 (& 6). Also. Also. I know how enthusiastic both you & Mosco are about RWBY, & i want to suggest sometime watching the sassons with the commentary tracks. To be honest, the first two seasons are quite chaotic, but you get to hear Monty. But from 4 onwards especially you just get so much background & random info & stuff that just really expands the world of RWBY. They also have a rotating cast, so different people drift in & out of the episodes based on where their focus / time was spent on that season. Kerry stays as a mostly constant voice & then Miles in a lot of the earlier seasons, while Eddy Rivas (one of the other writers brought on) is one more consistently from 6 or 7 onwards. Otherwise, some of the animators, other writers, co-directors, voices, & other staff come in episodes important to them. I’m not huge on commentaries, but the RWBY ones are great for people who really love the show & the world/universe.
