I didnt really consider this episode really controversial, but I can tell why in a way.. also, it's probably one of the weakest episodes in this season/franchise 😭💔

RaisedEyebrow

Definitely one of the series' weaker episodes in terms of moral and delivery. BUT, solid jokes and meme starters. So YMMV if that balances out.

Taigan

Normally, the fact that Mosco, Morgan, and you are all doing MLP reactions is great. But then we get to episodes like this one and I’m like “ugggh… I have to watch this THREE TIMES?!”

Sarah H

This episode is another example where a pony that's supposed to be in the scene is just missing. After Rarity scolds Applejack for wasting a luxury sleeper car on a tree, you don't see Applejack on the train again until the buffalo are done stealing the sleeper car. You hear her among the others when the buffalo wake them up, but she's not actually included in the scene. This time I don't think it's intentional, as it was in the Diamond Dog episode, where it didn't make sense to have Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash fall with the others because they can fly, but I can't think of a reason for Applejack not to be included during that time on the train other than being forgotten or the writer's deciding Applejack would jump into action and derail (pun intended) the heist.

Sarah H

Also, as he walked by in the background, I just noticed the bandage (?) around the waist of the dog you got from your neighbour; his name isn't coming to me right now, but I hope he's okay!

Joe Goes Over is the Best, He's the Spooky Space Kook of Scooby-Doo YouTubers, and F***ing Carl the Stuman Forever Sucks!

Honestly, I was completely on Rainbow Dash's side, she was a lot less bias than Applejack was due to not having any prior relationship with the buffalo tribe whereas Applejack had family among the settlers. Of course considering what the episode was clearly referencing, I'm more inclined to side with buffalo tribe. When I was a kid and I first watched this episode, I didn't know about the suffering that the Native Americans had been through or the 'Indian Wars' as they were called, which was basically just a one-sided massacre. Also Pinkie Pie really dropped the ball in the end, showing up with her song and dance and angering the chief into fighting when he was clearly about to stop before it began.

Sarah H

Pinkie probably: ✨Exposure therapy✨

og.monstr

13:58 YEP. Yep. The writers bungled that analogy real bad. As it turns out, trying to convey a simplistic moral, based on the real-life genocide of Indigenous Peoples, towards a juvenile demographic that's usually considered to be predominantly white maybe wasn't the smartest idea...

Ryan

The big issue as I recall was how much it tries to "both sides" the issue, where the settlers and buffalo are both supposed to have reasonable points despite this conflict clearly being based on a real history with a very obvious right and wrong side. Think that Star Trek episode with the black and white cookie aliens, where the oppressed people are presented as being just as much at fault as the oppressors.

Sirenityy2u

I'm waiting for episodes 25 and 26🥹

Yeah, as I previously said in the comments here, as a kid I knew practically nothing about how the Native Americans suffered due to the whitewashing my history textbook in elementary school had when I first watched this episode. When my mom started homeschooling me and I more access to the Internet, I was shocked to discover the horrific truth. And trying to portrait Natives who had their lands unjustly taken from them by greedy settlers as being just as in the wrong as them leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Sirenityy2u

Wait youre right I forgot about that one how could I forget it? Top 5 in the season😭❤️

Mirdo

Ponies, you have the personal student of Princess Celestia right there and a dragon that can send her the letter in an instant. Maybe.. make use of that? These tiny horses, man..

Dusti

💔 thankfully this whole thing never comes up ever again besides like one reference to it later on, but this was a horrible idea

Willow 404

Well intentioned, perhaps poorly executed :/

Kev Rink

I love that one of Pinkie's statements in her song was basically "Hey, we're all ungulates!"

MephilesNumberOneFan

This is a weird episode, because if you ignore the implications, it's actually pretty solid, with some of the best jokes in the series, like Shy becoming a tree.

MephilesNumberOneFan

Also, Braeburn has a bit of a reputation in the fandom for being the one person almost everyone agrees is gay. Like, I can't think of a single straight ship involving him that's even remotely popular.

MephilesNumberOneFan

Also also, this is the episode that gave birth to the fanterm "wingboner", because of that shot of Dash with her wings spread while watching Pinkie's song.

Sydney Horton

Aside from the obvious controversy(nothing I can say that hasn't been said), Fun fact: Braeburn, AppleJack's cousin, is said to by gay. Sadly, this was 2010 so, y'know

Phoenix_mercury

The thing about the ending that I actually really liked is that not only do the buffalo have a path through the orchard but the ponies are essentially paying for the use of the land that the buffalo are allowing them to use

Lil Ferret

The lesson about compromise and communication was respectable and there were good intentions. But maybe using such a sensitive topic that shouldn’t be as simplified as this is, as the setting for it, is just notttt a good idea… like at all.

Burghley

Yeah this episode was something else, a ton of funny moments but I usually skip this episode when re-watching MLP- mostly cuz I cant see my GOAT Applejack in that light ever again

Lil Ferret

Real, this episode does not count in AJ’s resume.

Kev Rink

I don't think there's anything wrong with the imagery. In a show where there are no humans, and most of the speaking characters are some kind of real world animal, American bison make a lot of sense for Native Americans. It would be like making an Australian character a kangaroo, a dingo, or a koala. All of which are well-known animals native to Australia.

Seraphem

Breaburn/Little Strongheart shows up sometimes, but that's it, and far outweighed by "Everypony is gay for Breaburn"

Seraphem

Leaving aside the IRL issues about this.. I do love how this implies Equestria is so peaceful, that they legit see food fights as the height of warfare. I remember one fun fic that took this idea and ran with it, mapping out some of Equestria's greatest modern battles, from the great Pool Noodle rampage, to the Foam Sword Offensive, and the single deadliest campaign in living memory, the Great Winter Snowball Fight (One Pony sadly died of hypothermia).

Kelsey O'Connor

Pinkie Pie and Patrick Star would likely be best of friends! And scary when they're messed with! lol!!

Kelsey O'Connor

Right before the "war" started, the creators must've been like, "🤔Oh wait we only got 3 minutes left...🫰HIT IT PINKIE!" Then added Pinkie to sing that song the second time! 🤣

Tarot-Sovereign

Yeah, this is probably the lowest point you'll get.

Ko Villa

It's like a Double edged sword, sometimes we get "Wow I get watch these 3 watch my favorite episode" and sometimes we'll get the opposite. Fortunately I don't think I remember any episode nearly as controversial or bad as this one I'm just counting down the days for my fav episodes, the EQ specials and the Movie.

POMMERA Pierre-Emmanuel

1:18 You don't see how this show can be controversial ? Apparently, you didn't heard yet about Derpy.

Charlie Odinoco

this episode is innocent like playing Cowboys and Indians is innocent.

Pipperz

Episodes like this are why I don't take people who hold Season 1 as the peak of MLP that seriously, luckily this was just a one off thing and later seasons handle their adult themes with more grace.

Faroth

And ep100 ♥️

Neetaku

This is produced in Canada, so that could be considered an outsider's point of view.

Deanie

I personally don't think this episode is as bad as some people remember it/make it out to be. From what I can gather, a lot of people are treating this episode as if it is meant to be a history lesson. Which if it was, it would be 100% indicative of the phenomena that is "The history books are written by the victors." However I think this episode is supposed to be just a lesson. A simple lesson to children of the 8-13 year old range - as was the target demographic at the time. Yes it is using the same concept as something that did happen and was a tragedy, but it is expressing the lesson that should have been discovered by the real world people. Which is, as you say, to defer to the wishes of the native tribe, get permission and be respectful.

laur

not a fan of the episode but i like how the chief used the words "we will allow" like yes king ONLY with your permission

Jonathan Wallis

OH boy, wait till she meets Sunset Shimmer (and finds out about her Canonically **Spoiler**)! ;)

Lilac Chimera

this episode has one of my favorite casual conversations in the whole show (fluttershy being a tree). Too bad it had to be stuck in with all that other stuff

Clayton Harbaugh

If you think this one’s bad, just wait until you get to the most controversial episode of the whole show: “The Last Roundup”. No spoilers, tho.

Diesel Marcus

I mean [redacted] has slap fights in his battle XD

Diesel Marcus

31:38 "As you can see, the pie war has gotten ferocious!"

Diesel Marcus

34:00 Lesson: Pay your damn taxes! XD

Midnightroze

I love ep100 :D But I do feel like it's not gonna hit the same unless you were active in the old MLP fandom or caught up in the fan-lore

Rixec2

Yeah, the topic here could have been handled better or just done without it referencing history. But the comedy is still on point. For example, there's a joke at the start a lot miss. The hoses pulling the train? It's a horse-powered engine. XD

Anzac-A1

History isn't actually written by the victors, fun fact.

Sora

As a kid, I think I knew this episode just felt wrong? I think it did fly over my head, but I remember siding with the buffalo My logic as a kid was “if I had something taken from me, of course I’ll be upset” I’m glad I understand better now and I always skip this episode on rewatches😅

Yaboiroshi

I don't really see this episode as controversial. We see it as controversial because we're basing it off our own history, but theirs, I'm assuming, is different
