Does anyone know how to legally get my hands on the original Re: Zero?

I've heard that the directors cut and the original are not radically different save some music choices, animation updates, and an added scene that occurs in season 2, but I would still much prefer the original just for video production reasons.

After doing some digging, it seems like it's gotten the Star Wars treatment where the originals just no longer exist.

I thought as a grey area solution I would buy the DVD / Blueray and then pirate the original, but seems like the copies floating around are fan-subs which have a tendency to lean towards the edgy, curse-ridden side (for... reasons?).

Has anyone been able to find a legal source for streaming the original?

If not I will just do the directors cut!

You would have to find pirated fansubs only. Imo the directors cut is fine and has better animation anyway. That or just do the dub which isint bad anyway and is closer to the originals than the fansubs.

legally, I believe there isnt a way unless you purchase it physically from japan but idk if it would have subs (i could be wrong but i remember hearing that crunchyroll is the only place that had the 25 episode cut). U MIGHT have to bite the bullet and watch the directors cut but pirating is always an option...

I follow some diehard re:zero fans on twitter and some of them feel like the director's cut is actually inferior. I don't know how widespread that idea is, but i trust them when it comes to re:zero opinions

also the dub is pretty good from everything ive seen and heard, but also like, the original subs voice actors are so iconic it would be a crime to not pick the original sub. it's like great VS peak, so sub would be better.

I get where they are coming from but the actual issues it causes are pretty minor and would not be noticeable at all on a first time watch anyways

Starky

last reply but potential 3rd solution, each directors cut episode has a title card in the middle that would have been the end of a normal episode. you could hypothetically end a directors cut episode half way through and start the second half in a later video. it is a little strange i suppose but if you dont wanna burn through an hour of content u can do that instead maybe

Haha yeah that's basically my concern, hour long episodes are much more than 2 times harder than two 30 minute episodes, but it's ok!

I would recommend the Director's Cut because they stick closer to the original material with what they choose to show each episode. Alas, I have no idea where to obtain it, other than the high seas.

The director's cut is widely available so no issues there :) The original is lost to the seas

It might just be easier to find somewhere to watch it in dub which is how I watched it and it’s really great in my opinion

Rafael Miranda

From what i remember, it was on prime video

@Mjw -- I personally prefer the original, because Yūsuke Kobayashi did such a good job voicing Subaru. He is easily one of my favorite voice actors. That's not to say his EN voice actor is bad, but I definitely prefer his JP voice.

@Rafael -- Yeah, I think that might work if he's able to use a VPN tool to get around the region lock. It looks like Amazon lists the 2 seasons of Re:Zero as 4 seasons, so I think that's the original.

Oh also Goodwin just for reference, if you choose the original version the first episode is 1A and 1B. They were aired together if I remember correctly, although some versions just have them as a single 50 minute episode.

Vali Sippola

It is on Amazon Prime, so if you have a VPN or it’s just available in your location, you could try that. And overall, while the Directors Cut is fine, i immensely prefer the Original. And when it comes to Dub VS Sub, the dub VAs are awesome for this show in particular, but the sub VAs are just in a league of their own for this show. It has one of the most talented voice casts in all of anime. Honestly the dub is a rewatch thing.

And for reference, while the Directors Cut smushed eps together to make hour long episodes, the first episode of S1 was aired as a 50 minute episode, so that is intended for ep 1, even in the original.

Kimats0548

If you have to use the Directors Cut there is a clear stopping point with a title card where one episode ends and the next begins so you can stop there. But I would recommend the sub and it's not because the dub is bad. The sub is just on another level imo.

As he said, the title card in the director's cut shows where the original episode would have ended. You could split it like that I guess

Reid Dawson

Selfishly glad your figuring this out. I never could find how to watch this show😅

So I tried it but could only find the directors cut (on a US VPN). There are 25 episodes on Japanese Prime, but there's a notice that it's the "edited version," so it seems like it's still the directors cut just split up

Vali Sippola

Ah. Thats a shame, coulda sworn it used to be on there as well. It seems like this whole fiasco is just these streaming companies not caring about the OG version and just assuming one is enough, so they don’t renew the license.

So, I’ve seen many suggestions, you could stop the episodes at the title cards, or watch the full directors cut eps in one sitting, or sail the high seas. Whatever you decide tho. It’s a shame that licensing issues are causing this headache.

Oh I am so happy to see this post.

When I try to open the original on Amazon (without a VPN tool), it says, "This video is currently unavailable to watch in your location," which could mean two things. It's stuck behind a region lock, or it's no longer offered anywhere. Meanwhile, when I open the Director's Cut version on Amazon, it says, "Watch with Crunchyroll. Start your 7-day free trial." When you tried to bypass the region lock, did you see the same messages? If so, then yeah, I guess Amazon doesn't work. -- Original -- https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B07DGJL9B2/ -- Director's Cut -- https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B0CK5YV4SB/

If it says Edited version, another possibility is that it's referring to the edits made for home release on DVD / Blu Ray for the original. Some of the changes people talk about from the Director's Cut first appeared in the original's home release. Usually, the anime we watch on streaming platforms is the televised original version, not the lightly retouched, edited version seen on home release. There's probably no easy way of knowing which version Amazon JP has, so I guess you're back to square one. It's a shame that they've made things so complicated.

I think Crunchyroll might be one of the few legal ways to watch it. Highly recomend the dub tho, as the dub cast did a great job on it.
