This episode was oddly comforting. Seeing the scouts fight titans again made me nostalgic.

benj

Wait... what is this Isayama? Eren is not Sigma Chad? >:(

Maia Brodsky

I can't wait to hear what you have to say about Connie.

Francesca White

that moment where Gabi saves Kaya is one of my fav in the series. i don't care that people hate Gabi, to me she's one of the best characters

Nick

The conversation between Gabi, Kaya and Niccolo cements my views on the show and it's themes pretty perfectly. What a great episode... I feel like this one really displayed what it means to truly rebel against a cruel world. All with Niccolo saying "The world is like this 'cuz there's a devil in all of us. We need to escape the forest" and it's like the gates are opened I said this on Twitter, but I think Gabi is like a hybrid of Eren and Reiner. Which would make sense considering how Eren and Reiner's dynamic is central to AOT Attack on Titan is beautiful for real and I'm glad this has had such a big payoff. At first, I thought it was a one sided story about revenge against man eating monsters. Ever since season 3 I've known that it's a deeply potent story about humanity, not just the parts we like to shy away from, but the parts we don't have enough of too. Pretty much every villain/antagonist in the story is posed as a tragic character. Reiner, Zeke, Eren, etc. I think that's beautiful, adding a layer to the fact that everyone has a devil inside of them.

Nick
>>77976707

And I think I understand the ED song being named "Child of Evil" a lot better now. It's not that Eren was born evil, but rather he was nurtured in a hostile world. Eren's ideology seems to be to destroy the forest entirely, so nobody can wander there even if they tried. Not saying that makes any of his actions right, but he has been very consistent to who he is since season 1. Protect the beauty and ones he loves at any cost. As for Zeke, he's trying to prevent children from ever entering that forest to begin with. This episode encapsulates all of AOT's themes and messages in 24 minutes runtime. Making it, in my opinion, one of the best in the show

Francesca White

you know i feel like Eren's mom and Sasha's dad would get along great, they're both such great people with a good philosophy on life

Nick
>>77976141

I can't totally blame Connie because his mom was left there for 4 years and he had to deal with that. Putting myself in his shoes idek what I would do, in the world of AOT Ultimately he's acting out of emotions and not reason but it makes sense

Herb2.0

Finally, Saul Goodman Titan

benj
>>77976852

They kinda butchered him I am not going to lie, the only thing that actually dissapointed me in this episode. In the manga it literally looks EXACTLY like Saul Goodman that it just had to be a joke Isayama threw in. https://imgur.com/t/attack_on_titan/Zgq0xSz Thats a screenshot from the manga for the same scene...it looks way more like Saul lmao.

benj
>>77976770

too bad nothing they believed in rubbed off on Eren... things could be so different

Nick
>>77976108

You mean to tell me Isayama presents Eren's actions here as monstrous??? Ridiculous! He's just protecting his people /s It's actually insane to me how these episodes are drenched in red/orange color tones, a dark atmosphere that feels apocalyptic with an actual supervillain rumbling and people still think Eren is the hero here Eren isn't doing it because he likes killing people, that's true. But regardless of motivation he's still going overboard and killing all the same

agoodwintv
>>77976006

Same! It's been a long time it feels since we had this kind of fight that was against mindless titans and not against man... And the setting and visuals were so reminiscent of season 1 that I feel it was an intentional callback. Back to basics sort of, deal with what's in front of you and look how far we've come...

MikeWest

They've really performed a masterstroke as far as getting me to root against this guy I've been rooting for, FOR 8 IRL YEARS. "They" I guess being Isayama lol. Edit: The final thing I need to see for this show to take my top spot all time, is Automail Levi

Jake White

I honestly don’t know if I’ve ever seen you so animated, emotionally invested, and well....’reactionary’ in any of your previous reactions before. And I gotta say, I loved it lol. This might be one of my favorite reactions ever of yours because 9/10 times you’re usually the calm reactor that enjoys everything going on, but doesn’t get nearly as hype or into the series as much as other reactors. Which don’t get me wrong, isn’t a bad thing. I actually love your fresh and original take on scenes that most reactors are just screaming in excitement at lol. But it was also super refreshing and wholesome to see how excited and invested you were, gasping and shouting and tearing up throughout. Top tier reaction night for us

a. tree

Something I didn't even consider until rewatching this episode here just now is that when Reiner says to run, at first it didn't make sense because the island is the only safe place from Eren right now, but as the scene where the two soldiers question Gabi shows, the people from Marley who are still on the island. probably not even the Eldians from Marley, are not safe or welcome on Paradis. The governing philosophy right now seems to be that of the Yeagerists, and people recognize Gabi, Pieck, Magath — they certainly recognize Reiner. There are probably a lot of people who would kill them on sight the first chance they get. It's like Armin said early in the episode, crushing the enemies outside of the walls doesn't do anything about the fact that there's hatred brewing inside the island itself. Which adds to the coolness of Gabi's actions this episode because she's putting herself at a lot of risk right now not even just by being in the area where the Titans are, but by showing her face.

Maia Brodsky

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think I've ever seen you tear up in an AoT reaction before. That Gabi scene is one of my favorites as well.

Xylen

Among all the other great moments this episode, I really like Shadis getting his moment in the sun, saving the lives of the very cadets that beat him to a pulp. Really hammering home the thesis of the episode (and the series, it seems).

Nick

Watching the reaction now, that video concept you mentioned about Gabi's realtime Eren headshot has been made! https://youtu.be/JqFrYYIKl_4

Maia Brodsky

Just a side note: the titan who Gabi killed to save Kaya was Nile, who saved Falco a few episodes back.

benj
>>77978299

Fuuuuuuuckkkk I didn't even realize this until now. Great...now I'm sad.

agoodwintv
>>77977763

Yeah I think that this season of Attack on Titan has been up there with some of my peak experiences watching shows and doing videos. There's a lot behind it. There's of course the fact that the show has been built up so damn well, from the deepest valleys of despair to what I feel are some of the greatest triumphs, all the while never having been guaranteed that anything that feels good would ever come our way. But then on a meta level I feel like doing AOT has been one of the most contentious for me ideologically. I'm lucky that it has almost entirely consisted of kind debate, cause it could have easily become something different, but that has led to a different level of attachment on a meta level to this show, and I feel like the crystallization of certain ideas is made more satisfying and exciting for me for that reason.

MooTuu

Shadis would appreciate your praise.

Nick
>>77978272

I am also now realizing there is some deep irony in Reiner getting pierced by a piece of the wall hitting him during the rumbling... just like how a piece of the wall landed on Eren's house

agoodwintv
>>77978110

There was so much characterization in just her putting her hair up to get it out of her face. Even as her hero Reiner is sitting there slouched against the wall, defeated, she's looking for what she can do, and it ends up being not just going out there again but doing something heroic and symbolically significant. When Reiner first said run, I was picturing them disappearing out into a remote countryside somewhere, away from all civilization.

Maia Brodsky
>>77978498

Appreciate it, then tell you you cursed him years later because you called him special.

DennisAnimeFan

Man, I can predict the scenes you'll like pretty well in this, but I really can't predict the ones that will make you tear up! Really enjoyed this :)

Lulu

I just realized Gabi saved Nile and killed him in the same day

Keegan Brakhage

i was watching this episode with my friends the other day, and when annie showed up i said "the last time an episode aired where annie was awake, I was still in middle school." im a juinor in college now lol.

ArmdVctr

Until now there are Eren stans who think he is in right and can't get over the fact Annie and Reiners are murderers. It's like the point of the show goes completley oassed them

Steve.

The scene where Gabi is putting up her hair in the mirror very clearly reflects the Eren scene in S4P1 (the famous "Tatakae, tatakae"). This is one the many things that cements the fact that Gabi is basically another iteration of Eren. As a protagonist/main character, Eren has failed. His hometown was trampled and people called him a devil, and he became a devil. Gabi's hometown was trampled (by Eren himself ironically), called other people a devil, and is now rising above all that hate and tragedy to become something greater. Eren is lost in the forest, now it's up to Gabi and the rest of the main crew to escape it.

Katrina Vieira

The parallel between Gabi killing Sasha and Kaya seeing Sasha in Gabi in this episode reminds me of the quote Mikasa said in season 1: "Life is cruel, and it is also very beautiful." Such a powerful scene.

Kotryna

Just learned this today, a little fun fact. Floch Forster's last name in German means "occupational and topographic name for someone who lived and worked in a forest" which is pretty symbolic. He sure does live in that forest. Smirking at mass murder and all.

benj
>>77981547

Exactly this. Man...reading comments like yours just seriously makes me sit back in my chair and ponder how SO many "fans" of this show are just letting the entire message of the series and all of its symbolism go completely over there heads and just resort to "Eren is Gigachad, I'm just a ride or die type of person! He is just so cool lol".

Tea-Spin

Really love seeing Jean taking the lead, he is really built for it.

Chris Sharpe

People keep wondering why Eren didn’t stop the Titans. I personally think it’s because Zeke transformed them (and also why he likely won’t be able to help Connie’s mom). There’s some evidence to back this up later in the manga, but I’m not going to delve too deep into that. I suppose that’s the end of “Annie when” tho.

Nick
>>77981939

I still remember when Marco told him he'd make a good leader. And Marco dying, all the way back in season 1's first half, was the key reason Jean kept fighting and joined the Scouts I also think Armin and Jean work extremely well together as comrades, even way back when Annie spared Armin's life and he had to flee with Reiner and Jean. So it's fitting that they're facing down this apocalypse together

GraphicsCow

You already replied to it, but in case anyone else is a Breaking Bad fan, 9:34 has the Saul Goodman titan lmao

benj
>>77982567

It looked so much more like Saul in the manga tho ;( Only thing MAPPA messed up in this episode adaptation wise.

Sean Carroll

Connie just wants to save that random titan which is not his mom because he left his PlayStation in there which was brought from marley 100 years ago when the eldians escaped to the island. Fingers crossed it’s not been crushed by that random titan that is not his mom…..

KuroOberon

almost 9 years later for us, annie is finally back!!

ArmdVctr

Alex: Scouts-Marley Warriors Team up! Yes! Eren stans: Throws up! It was so easy for Alex to forsee a team up against Eren. But Eren supporters completely hate it. "Cringevengers" "Armong".

joe martin

not sure if anyone mentioned it, but apparently this episode showed armin's first confirmed pure titan kill... and it was pyxis :(

iaani

Wait, I just noticed, was the titan that Gabi killed Nile? Nile helped Falco, Gabi and Colt a few episodes back and now she had to kill him. This show man...

cuneyt117

another great reaction its always a pleasure watching ur videos :D

ErrantSara

Flish Floch somehow survives again, there's huge holes in the tower and loose rubble everywhere can't he just "slip" and "accidentally" fall out the tower

Emman Reed

I think the titan gabi killed was the nice eldian soldier who helped falco escape.

Steve.
>>78008908

You’re right, he was also the commander of the Militray Police and has been around since S1!

Jk844

A lot of people see that Gabi scene as a slap in the face by having her replace Sasha.

Mers0n

Don't sleep on Shadis, remember he was good enough to be the Commander of the Scouts. Even if he wasn't on Erwin or Hange's level, he was instrumental in their growth.

AryTheDog

kinda unrelated but the new MHA movie is now out with subs on torrent sites

benj
>>78031844

the dub version should be on torrent sites now as well than

hays collins

I 100% thoight Shadis was Pixis I got so excited haha

ArmdVctr

Unfortunately a vast majority of AoT fans know so little about Ethics and Philosophy.

benj
>>78116120

Honestly I think AoT has just proven a majority of people in general know very little about ethics and morality, not just fans of the show.

Al

Random off-topic, but did Goodwin get engaged/married recently? I haven't kept up with all his videos for a while and just noticed a ring on his left hand - if so, congrats man!

CRS

I love that Eren has ceased to be a character and is now Judgement Day. He's Ragnarok, Armageddon, whatever traditional calamity you want to call it. A world that feeds small children to dogs and has Magath spending decades brainwashing Eldian children into hating themselves so he can turn them into weapons is not a world that should expect infallibility and yet they KEPT moving forward in conquest not expecting Eren to keep moving forward in his will to oppose it. It's so beautiful and terrible and tragic and cathartic all at the same time.

benj
>>78195503

I'd compare it more to the Holocaust or other Nationalist Genocide's cause thats what Eren is doing but yeah thats pretty much what it is. Tragic and terrible indeed.

CRS
>>78195503

Actually, nationalist genocide is exactly what Marley was in the middle of until Eren stopped them. The world declared war thinking they'd win because of their incredible might but Eren got the advantage and turned the tables. Understandable mistake though, there are so many twists and turns in the narrative. Hard to always keep the cause and effect straight.

benj
>>78195503

They aren't mutually exclusive. Both the Marley Genocide and the Genocide being commited by Eren right now are motivated by Nationalist ideaolgy.

CRS
>>78195503

Untrue. Eren doesn't oppose the race of the people attacking Paradis. He opposes the fact that they want them dead. Zeke and the royal line think they should lay down and die but Eren doesn't agree w them. Either way, a mass of innocent folks die and that's the terrible part but Marley and the world coalition of invaders dying by their own huburus is the beauty of it.

benj
>>78195503

Children around the world don't want them dead, they are literally kids. Babies. I don't buy the whole "Eren has no choice" narrative. Gabi proves in this episode that you do have a choice to do the right thing and save innocent lives. Eren has chosen to be the opposite, he is the anti-hero of this story now.

CRS
>>78195503

Paradisian children don't want to be killed either and they are the least responsible for the state f the world in AOT. Notice that Gabi had the choice to save people and be good when Sasha's family was preternaturally kind to her, but she spat obscenities about their daughter instead. She didn't start her journey to "hero" in earnest until her own people were in mortal danger. It's certainly easier to be the bigger person when all your plans of domination and murder have been turned around on you 180 degrees.

benj
>>78195503

How are Marleyan children or Children from Anyakapons homeland who have nothing to do with any of this more responsible for the "state of the world" than Eldian/Paradisian children? They are all equally innocent and have no responsibilty for ANY of this, they are literally children. It doesn't matter if they were brainwashed from birth like Gabi was. The fact that these brainwashed children like Gabi are rising out of there ignorance to be better people than those who are just mindlessly picking a side is proof of a greater fight going on here that Erwin talked a lot abt. Its never easy to be the bigger person, at least in this show it isn't.

Sumiya Mayna

Who else is just checking in to see if the new ep is uploaded lol
