hey all, here's a bunch of stuff from my research that i couldn't find places for in the first two episodes of the worst wing. here's the rough rundown of what I talked about:

show's reddit community

a number of blatantly wrong bits of history

how behavioral economics is maybe pseudoscience: They Studied Dishonesty. Was Their Work a Lie? (The New Yorker, 2023)

cass sunstein and samantha power

a great example of liberals justifying empire Imperialism, Liberalism & the Quest for Perpetual Peace (MIT Press, 2005)

the west wing's peace in gaza plotline

deeper reading: How the War On Terror Became America’s First “Feminist” War (Lithub, 2021)

Oh my god I did not remember that but with the black woman trying to claim the civil war was about "industry." Yikes.... EDIT: came back to finish this video. oh man. I didn't remember that bit about Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japan wanted to surrender but they wanted to do it CONDITIONALLY. America wanted to force an unconditional surrender and retaliate for pearls harbor. Of you want proof just think about the fact that they choose CITIES OF PEOPLE instead of legit military targets.

Makes me want to give teenage me a smack to the head for thinking this was a good show. Yeah, I was ignorant as hell but don't think it's a good enough excuse.

Honestly I think that i legit didn't absorb some of the arguments characters were making or what they were saying at certain points. Sorkin talked about mimicking "the sound" of a good argument and I think i got kind of sucked in by that. Because the show moves so quickly and the dialog has a "ping pong" approach, some of this stuff just legitimately didn't register with me or stick in my memory. Most of what I remember from this show aside from stuff like the "peters map" thing is character moments like Josh dealing with PTSD. I think the "prime time drama" stuff inevitably sticks out in our memory after we finish episodes more than what military strategy the president was considering.

I thought Aaron Sorkin was fired from The West Wing because he was arrested for cocaine posession??

Skip Intro

He was arrested for hallucinogenic mushrooms, but that was in spring 2001, and he wrote 2 seasons after that. From what I can tell, the main reason for his departure is the insane workload he took upon himself and the fact that he was always behind schedule and over-budget

Oh that's fascinating. Not sure why i didn't know that. Thanks as always for your work.
