I share all your copaganda videos with my comrades in the DSA. They’re very instructional on how what we consume shapes our lives and society more than we realize. I really liked this one because you challenged me to reconcile with a collective desire for a world without police and prisons and the desire for justice. What are the roots of this country’s ideas about justice? Is it through punishment and no one can ever be redeemed? Or can we revise our collective notions of what is a crime? (public urination) Can we then make systems that prevent people from ever needing to commit offenses (free public bathrooms), and if we determine that in cases of murder or rape, what rehabilitative treatment should be? Halden Prison in Norway is an excellent example for what this could look like. But that’s just on the civilian side. For cops, I started thinking about what defunding the police would look like as restorative. I have room in my heart for cops to quit their jobs and seek therapy for what they’ve internalized about society. And instead become bus drivers, electricians, sanitation workers, landscapers, construction workers, etc. Jobs that should have good wages, good union protections, and good equipment to do their work well. So all the things that we need — Medicare For All, free public colleges and universities (including medical schools), and passing the PRO Act (making it easier for workers to form unions) — will also be crucial to moving the ball further on defunding the police and funding these kinds of policies. Thanks as always, and looking forward to that Twin Peaks episode!

Great episode. I’d be super interested to hear your take on Veronica Mars. I love VM and it served as my Buffy replacement in the early 00s. However, found myself cringing through a rewatch due to Veronica consistently aligning herself with the wealth and privilege in Neptune. Assuming the blame of women/ POC over the accused wealthy straight white man of the ep. Doesn’t sit right or feel right but happens again and again. The show does a lot to set up social class as a plot consideration and then follows through with apathy mostly, too. Not sure even Keith Mars can redeem it for me now?!

So this was the video that finally made me a Patreon subscriber, ya got me! I've been watching every single one of your Copaganda episodes since the first one. My stepfather was a career NJ State Trooper You know... the only cops in the US that still haven't stopped using the uniform they adopted in the 1930s to look like literal Nazis? The only LEO with their own Springsteen song takedown? And for the record, it's even worse than most people think... The last two years have been a real doozy for me personally, between my mother's suicide using my stepdad's service weapon and the videos of police violence that dredge up some real horrible personal trauma in addition to the utter fury and heartbreak I feel on behalf of over-policed communities. Your videos have been a mental health salve for me, so thank you for making this series. But as a huuuge mythology nerd, Gaiman fangirl, and someone who was raised in right-wing conservative evangelical culture and is a current member of the Satanic Temple... Well, I really enjoyed this one :-) I always analyzed the character of Lucifer through the mythological and literary lenses (Gaiman specifically used Milton's concept of Lucifer in The Sandman comics) and I enjoyed seeing the show and character (especially this iteration from US network TV execs as opposed to the Gaiman original) analyzed through a more societal and criminal justice critical perspective. Honestly, there is a whooooole lot more I could say about how historical depictions of Satan/Lucifer/The Devil have often said wayyy more about Western culture (and how it operated morally at given points in its history) than almost any other character from the Western/Hellenistic/Roman/Judeo-Christian written record. Anyway, I WOULD LOVE THAT PAW PATROL VIDEO! Also wondering if you were ever planning to address the particularly insidious impact that the forensic science procedurals of the early 2000's... As someone whose parents watched CSI, CSI: Miami, and CSI:NY EVERY WEEK, I know there's a lot of crap in that septic tank as well. Regardless, keep on keeping on and thank you for your work! <3 Kat

Would love to see you revisit the current season of B99 once its finished airing. I'm having a lot of complex feelings on how they're trying to deal with everything and not finding much good discussion online about it that goes beyond just applauding them for the effort.
