Adonai is a character that while has done terrible things for basically a thousand years and caused so much hurt to almost everyone in arcadia especially some of the party members, he's still a character I kinda feel bad for.

He got thrown into all this not knowing what was going on and was so naive to trust Adam when the latter offered him his life and family back (his wife and son died in the events of Exodus ). After accepting the offer, Adonai, being the talented bio/genetic engineer he is, helped the cosmic entity to create lifeforms that later would populate arcadia in order to serve the needs of Adam, and thus he basically helped create the new humanity (the ixim) and enslave them.

However when a mysterious young man that looks too much like his late son, Kyrios, appears out of nowhere, Adam's lies start to become evident, eventually, Adam tries to use this doppelganger as his vessel, and that's when Adonai after realizing that indeed somehow that was Kyrios, and with hurt in his heart, decides to kill his son before it became a monster. In that very moment, Adonai confronts Adam and this one only expresses how ironic fate is: is like things are destined to repeat themselves endlessly, don't you think Adonai?

Adonai suddenly wakes up and somehow things are back to the starting point with Adam and him working on the new civilization, he has the feeling something is wrong and he is forgetting something.... was that just a bad dream?

To make the tale short, Adonai is trapped in a memory loop, where his memories are being changed little by little every cycle so he can carry the orders of Adam. However, Adonai somehow always discovers Adam's plans to use these "clones" of Kyrios as his vessels, Avatars of Chaos, and thus Adonai sees himself forced to kill his son over and over again so he doesn't become the devil that destroys all. Adonai's memory loop continues to carry on until Hunna, who has been accompanying Adonai so far,  out of pity decides to show him her memory recordings and reveals to him the truth that adam was hiding from him. That fated day in the necropolis, it wasn't an accident that killed his wife Sophia and Kyrios, it was him, Adonai. Possessed by Adam he killed his own son to stop him from using the heavens key (which kyrios does get to use before dying) and then proceeded to kill Sophia but in her last seconds alive, she uses the hell blade and imprisons Adam, draining his power and collapsing the Door of Omega, thus the Absolute Zero event takes place, killing all life forms in a perimeter of thousands of kilometers. Adonai wakes up from the trance and sees his hands and himself, again, bathed in blood, next to him his wife and son's corpses. He always suspected it was him, but he was so desperate to believe otherwise, and thus Adam seeing Adonai at his lowest point, lies to him and tells him it wasn't his fault and that he can bring them back with Adams's powers, but he needs energy and the keys.

And thus after these revelations, Adonai, who has been losing a bit of his sense of reality, and Hunna decide to stop adam and ruin his plans this last cycle, whatever it takes, whatever the cost..

This doesn't excuse Adonai in the slightest, he is still a villain, and while he now can see through Adam's lies, he still has to play the obedient dog role until his cards are right, which means continuing to carry on terrible acts that he doesn't feel much remorse for, he sees them as "necessary sacrifices". He has his own agenda and while at first, it would seem his goals and Adam's align, they could not be any more different. Adonai's Character will question the concept of "Villain", and what it takes to become one is not being evil, but believing you are right, that what you doing is the right thing to do no matter the cost.

Sorry if this was too long! I just really like Adonai as a character and I could talk for hours about him hahaha. All this is a bit of a resumed list of the events but of course, there are details and things I didn't talk about here. Maybe when I make a Lore page about this we can address it.

Lastly, I didn't want to tell you his backstory so soon cuz I don't wanna paint him like, poor Adonai he did nothing wrong, but I think in order for you to appreciate the character it was necessary to show you a bit of his complexity and that meant telling you thing as they are. You might be thinking then why Asher and Adonai are enemies? Their goals while might align at some point, also involve paths that completely conflict with each other, making it impossible for them to not be enemies, you'll see why.

Oh dear, I can imagine how Asher and Adonai are absolutely not compatible regarding how far they would go to achieve their goals. Asher is gonna have such complicated and negative feelings for what's left of his parents. Like, these are no ordinary mommy/daddy issues, I will from now on call Adonaios/Syzygy Daddy/Mommy THE Issue. Which also makes me wonder if he would like to see how Adonai and Sophia originally were or if that's too painful for him to know? I also wonder how old Kyrios was when Exodus went down because Tony and Cam called him a kid/child but he was clearly capable enough to wield the Heaven's Key? Also, Hunna is very interesting too. Like, on one side she doesn't have enough agency to resist Adam on her own, but enough agency to show Adonaios her memories. Anyway, time to reshuffle some theories. Also, when do we get to see Sophia, I wanna see how off I was with how she looks?

The design is so sick! I love it!

The first incompatibility is that one of Adonai's goals is to destroy Kyrios' soul and asher with it, so there we already have a fundamental conflict that can't be solved unless Asher is no longer useful to Adam or Adonai changes his mind and both are difficult to happen. Asher might be curious about Adonai and Sophia's past selves but I think he has no reason to believe they were different, when you meet new people that are bad or toxic, you don't automatically assume that maybe they were good people and need the benefit of the doubt, especially if both are interested in your death, you just run or defend yourself. I think there will be glimpses of Adonai's past self, there is a moment in particular where asher gets told the tragedy his life was and maybe considers he wasn't terrible, to begin with, but he was made terrible by the situation, yet he is inexcusable. For Sophia, I think it would be harder to show but I do not discard the idea that asher could get to know something that makes him believe that maybe she wasn't horrible at some point, I think the real question is, does it matter? does it change anything? Kyrios was 8-9 years old most likely, and yes you can imagine him struggling to use the heaven's key but he had Ixbal with him to carry it so he only really needs to hold/ activate it close to the Adam room. Hunna is really an interesting case as you said, she basically sees Adonai kill the main users of the blades (unable to stop him due to how powerful he was as the avatar of chaos), yet when Adonai wakes up and he reactivates her, while she is wary and defensive, very quickly she notices how confused Adonai is and that he clearly isn't the same person that did those terrible things, there is more to it. She decides to follow Adonai and discover more about the situation and slowly starts to understand Adam as well. it might be the fact that all these years really mean little to an android but she comes to the point where she empathizes with adonaios and even without a plan she can no longer see him suffer and being deceived. Hunna was used to following orders and not intervening in human affairs but something changed in her after so many years of seeing Adonai being manipulated. Hunna is thematically the counterpart of Ixbal, not only in looks, she has agency and a say in matters(even though she has to keep appearances of obedience) and knows everything that made arcadia the world it is today, even under Adonai's command, Adonai kinda appreciates her and respects her for their companionship all these years. In a way, Hunna is the fully realized version of what Ixbal could become and her existence will taunt Ixbal's curiosity. As for Sophia's appearance, I'll post some Pre-History (exodus era) rough sketches next week, so you will be able to see her face there! (at least her early design haha)

I mean, while Adonaios and Adonai are basically the same person, just a bit tumbled through time and trauma, I think of Syzygy and Sophia as different people in a similar way as Kyrios and Asher. If his life experiences make Kyrios a different person every time he incarnates, doesn't that make Syzygy different from Sophia because she doesn't have her soul?

AbsoAlex

you could argue so, but I think that even if syzygy doesn't have the original soul, she is more Sophia compared to Asher's situation where he is his own person but he inherits the soul legacy. Syzygy depends on Sophia's original personality, memories, and experiences, and while the AI itself didn't experience them, it virtually has the same data and knowledge as Sophia and acts according to her og personality just without human ethic and moral boundaries. She is not Sophia, but is pretty close and very easily could be if you get what I mean.

NioSatyr

Yeah, that's definitely true. I was thinking of it in a "genetics and development" kinda way. But if "soul" equals genetics in that analogy, they would still be the same, only that Syzygy lacks the "DNA" and only lives from "proteins" that were already produced. Kinda like red blood cells in mammals or sieve cells in plants. I will still continue to headcanon that Sophia would hate Syzygy with a passion. Maybe especially BECAUSE they are so similar. In a "Thank you, I will take my hybris every time over *ghostly hand gestures at Syzygy*...all of this." way.

Holy smokes, yeah Adonai is still terrible but reading his backstory makes me love him more fhjdhfjhg-- I hope some day he will be free from the loop and faces the aftermath, good or bad Side note though: BEAUTIFUL JOB ON THE ART AND LORE! It was a pleasant read despite the emotional damage LMAO. I was reading this while listening to some Diablo lofi and it really got me in the mood. I'll keep going through all the posts I've missed to catch up so I apologize for like spam!

PS. I still have an omega crush on Adonai -- he will do no wrong in my heart 👁️👁️

AbsoAlex

Between you and me , he is not redeemed nor forgiven but he does join the party in the last part of the story/game cuz you need him and he is “free” from the cycle since he has failed to stop Adam.

AbsoAlex

Thanks so much I’m happy you are liking these and the lore ! Please spam me all you want , it excites me seeing people enjoy Arcadia and talk about it 💜💜💜

Tea

Oh yes for sure, gotta let him know he's omega fucked up! I'm glad he joins the party even if temporary (that situation will always be my jam LOL)
