Another fascinating, engrossing story! This take on "The Little Mermaid" was better done than - well - The Little Mermaid!

I do really like this episode as a one off story, Melora's harshness at the start and growth does feel genuine. Those types of hostile characters can be a bit tricky to pull off but they did it well here, you can tell where she's coming from but that doesn't mean the way she handled people at the start was justified. She was overly hostile and combative, but she at least had enough self awareness when Dr Bashir gave her a dressing down she actually reflected on it and realised she was in the wrong. She grows on you as the episode goes by because she wasn't one note, I mean you do feel for her with the choice she has to make, she could continue the treatment and never need the chair again, but in exchange she could never really go home again for any long period of time... it's not an easy choice. Dr Bashir really is charming at times lol, when he's not being too self aggrandizing, he is pretty smooth and knows the right things to say, he probably would have found someone by now if he stopped chasing Dax all the time. Oh, also the Klingon restaurant is a minor reoccurring element you'll see from time to time in the background, the Promenade, Quark's bar and the other shops are actually one big connected physical set so to make it feel alive there are a ton of minor reoccurring background characters just living their lives. You can also translate what the Klingon chef and Melora were arguing about because they actually invented a full language for Klingon for the franchise.

THE GOOSH!

It's truly impressive how the writing in this show creates characters that -despite their faults of attitude or whatever - you can easily empathize with! This was masterfully done!

A few days ago, I had my first day on a job after applying for months. A few minutes after the shift started, I tripped on a raised ledge, dislocated my knee and ended up in the hospital. I’m not sure what I’m saying except that this is a well timed episode for me and I think I understand her perspective pretty well. You don’t want to need so much help for everything as an adult. It’s demoralizing. You jus want to live normally but because of something out of your control you can't. I like that she wasn't really mean, just defensive. Also Julian was very charming in this one.
