Thank you for the reaction, Gal! This episode is super tough. Out of curiosity, do you think you’ll watch the “unofficial 11th episode” of Band of Brothers, the documentary “We Stand Alone Together” (on HBO) after you finish episode 10? I think you’d really love it, especially after completing the series and seeing what the men went through.

This has always been my favourite episode because it just hits so hard and manages to touch on so many aspects of war that is not really seen by the general public. Seeing the physical injuries and destruction was always expected but then also seeing the effects it had on great people like Compton and Malarkey is such an important thing to watch and understand how much war can change someone. On top of that, getting to see the consequences of military administration just filling positions without consideration for what the position really requires. Dike, wasn’t necessarily a terrible officer. He’s essentially another Sobel. He should have never been put in charge of Easy company and he had as little choice in it as anyone else did. And lastly, getting to see how important good NCOs like Lipton are for a group of soldiers because they can be the heart and soul of a company and keep people alive and safe from inevitable military administration errors. Great episode and great reaction! Only a few more left for Easy Company!

That "Are you bored?!" might be one of the angriest reactions Ive seen to this episode. Gal was ready to strangle that man.

Froooom

Oooh ive been looking forward to you watching this one

Gallows Girl Amy

It's kinda trivial but Jack Foley who debuts in this episode was played by our old friend Jamie Bamber (Lee Adama).

Love the hoodie! 34:05 is my favourite part of the whole series. If I remember right, the real Dike sued for his portrayal in the series and won.

This episode is the most significant for me personally knowing what I know. I was in Iraq and was mainly a fobbit, meaning I rarely left the base as I worked in the operations center, worked with UAVs, but I was also on the counter indirect fire analysis team. That is Army speak for after we got shelled or rocketed I tried to figure out where they came from. First task was figuring out when the attack was over, then sprinting to the nearest impact (checking for casualties first) and taking measurements, shooting a back azimuth, digging up any remaining pieces to try and identify the rocket. Then I would take that information and run back to the ops center on a dead sprint to tell the UAV where to go. If we could find the launch point within 10 minutes(rules of engagement) we could shoot back with our M109 Paladins, shooting back always made everyone feel better after we just got hit. TV shows and movies don't do real explosions justice. So much louder and you can physically feel them even when they are a ways away. 2 Feb 2008 FOB Warhorse got hit by 4 240mm rockets. These were big rockets, 1 Rocket turned two wood buildings into splinters, another damaged 23 vehicles. Nobody died that day but about a dozen got their purple hearts. I was in about a dozen rocket attacks total and some of those rockets landed across the street from me. I ended up with PTSD, specifically sound induced panic attacks from anything that sounded like a rocket impact. My body would automatically go into combat mode when I heard certain sounds, it was frustrating, I had no control over it. It has largely gone away but it's been 17 years. I'm still a little nervous around fireworks. The largest of those rocket attacks or mortar attacks was a dozen rounds. The scariest there was only 4 rounds, and the shockwave from those rockets gave me a nasty headache. The Easy Company guys endured WAYYYYYY more than that and the few I endured gave me PTSD. The strength those guys exhibited mentally and physically blows my mind.

I recognize him in the next episode. The helmets and the snow and the dirt on people’s face is really throws me off.

Steven Lowdon

So, no actual lawsuit but: “Norman Dike's portrayal in Band of Brothers as an incompetent character contradicts his real-life heroics during WWII, where he exhibited bravery and leadership. Despite being estranged from Easy Company, Dike went on to achieve notable professional success after the war.”

Michael Siegel

This, to me, is the toughest episode of the series (and indeed, the toughest passage in the book as well). Not to say the remaining episode are aren't amazing, but this is the one that always hit the hardest. Easy could have broken in their attack on Foy, but the NCO's like Lipton held it together for the last full measure. There's a funny story to tell about Spiers but I'll wait until you've finished the series. As for Dike, Winters wrote specifically about him being a poor commander and why he made the decision to relieve him with Spiers. So it's not entirely dramatization.

Jay SMARTASS

The research i did on this was Dyke while was not quite as incompaitant as displayed in the show he did freeze more than once in combat. Which warranted his replacement by Spiers.

that spiers run is one of the few moments in film and tv history that is actually undersold, it was alot longer of a distance he ran in real life but it would be so unbelievable to show how far he really ran, it was an entire town that he ran through not just a few 20 yards

Many of the vets of ww2 who I worked with in elderly care told me stories of the war. After the war in ukraine started, many said to literally push them to minefields in their beds to serve their last service. so us young folks could not witnes all the horrors they have seen.

BMackVO

This was a rough one. But it truly hammers home why we feel so strongly for these men, and what they went through. This is why we understand that desecrating the American flag is so abhorrent to us, and the sacrifices these men made for us.
