Ben

In the years since this episode was first broadcast, Moffat has said that one of his only regrets about his time on the show was how he wrote that last scene where Amy comes on to the Doctor. This is his exact quote: "There's one mistake that rankles me to this day because it's just wrong. There's a scene at the end of a season 5 episode called 'Flesh and Stone' where Amy (Karen Gillan) comes on to the Doctor (Matt Smith) and it's a very good idea for a series because she's been through this traumatic experience and she doesn't quite know who or what the Doctor is or what his interest is in her. "There's a brilliant scene to be written there and I entirely avoided writing it. I played it for laughs and it's so wrong."

Leo Cap

I do wish this episode hadn't broken the golden rule for angels... we (the audience) shouldn't get to see them move. still a great episode and fantastic 2-parter

Leguś

You are gonna hear this a lot probably. "The Angel is full of forests."

Space Monkey Mafia

Backwards spoiler, sort of. Handcuffs, must it always end this way. Tennant was handcuffed when River sacrificed herself in the library.

AnastasiyaK

Is the full length episode delayed for some reason?

Michael Siegel

No spoilers! But the questions you are asking about River are the questions we were all asking at the time and ... you will not be disappointed. :)

Merkavar

Yeah, waiting for the full version also.

Shanaeri Rynale

In the previous episode, the doctor stated that the angels didn't have the energy to send people back in time and were starving due to the act of them being the cavern for so long so they killed to leach the energy from them instead. So it links with the angels needing the energy leaking from the ship.

Ian Swallow

So I accidentally spilled a minor thing about the Angels wanting the energy of the ship. I’m sorry about that it wasn’t intentional but I’ll have to be more careful in the future

funnylilgalreacts

It threw off the vibes and made me think “not again” with the companion and the doctor obsession! I wish he hadn’t done that either

Adinium

No the Doctor doesn’t know Father Octavian in the future, he said “You know me at my best” referring to this moment

William Wood

An excellent story, and I love this era. So many good thing to come. Alex Kingston is one of my favourite actresses, never misses a beat. Matt’s portrayal is reminiscent of prior actors versions of the Doctor, but differentiates enough to be uniquely his. Makes you all warm and fuzzy

Ronnie

I think watching this 2 parter is when I fully bought Matt Smith as the Doctor. He'd already been great in previous episodes, but seeing his range of emotions and his interactions with River Song really sold me. I just adore the way Matt Smith carries himself as the Doctor and portrays 11's personality.

Paul Mix

Thanks for sharing that… I wasn't aware of Moffat's misgivings, as it was an errant off-putting moment in such an otherwise excellent episode/season.

Topher 🤪

Is that the deleted scene that comes between the end of this episode and the beginning of the next?

Christopher Boscarino

"Hey! Who turned off the lights!" Dr Who. dad joke right there for you.

Karston James

As i understand it. The angels send you back in time then feed of the energy created. Here they were feeding on the ship and needed a body. Technically we only realy know that they snapped Bobs neck and maybe the first 2 cleriks. After then we dont actually know what happens

Jake Beaumont

To continue my comment from last week, about how when you look at an angel, it literally stops existing, i.e. turns into a literal statue. So you can smash it, but you smashed a statue, not an angel, and without a body to return to (because you smashed it), an incorporeal angel might be worse. Anyway, lots of people were reasonably upset with the scene where we see the angels moving. For two reasons 1: usually even we can't see them move so it breaks the meta nature of them (this is a complaint i share) 2: even if someone is ok with them moving when we see them, they shouldn't still be stone, because if its stone that means they don't exist, their natural state is not stone. This complaint i dont share, but only because i have a fan explanation. It was half explained in the episode. They were scared, and their natural defences kicked in, assuming they were seen. But that doesn't explain why they're stone, and could move whilst still stone. My theory is that after a milennia existing as these creatures, it has evolved them to develop a stone natural defence (as opposed to literally turning into a statue), so in this case, that defence kicked in, they thought they couldn't move, realised they werent being seen, so tried moving before the defence swtiched off. Sort of explanation, but it works enough for me.

"Anything about River in the future, you keep to yourself, you hear me?" - that's a very complicated request for River, after all - you already saw her future with 10 and Donna. What you really don't want is spoilers about River in the past.

Doug C

Yeah, the scene doesn’t fit with the rest of the story, but that exchange about needing to get her sorted out is one of my favorite jokes.

Doug C

Oh… there are so many times you’re going to have to rewatch parts of this episode AND your comments… but I can’t comment on them yet!!! Argh!! 😁

Ben

No its at the end of this ep but it continues into that minisode.

Leo Cap

There's honestly a handful of episodes in the series where female characters (companions or otherwise) are written as being pretty blasé & insensitive towards their romantic partners. I think maybe BBC thought this was "cute" at the time or something? i.e. Rose stringing Mickey along for 2 seasons was hard to watch (although Mickey definitely wasn't helping himself by being a complete doormat). Amy trying to pull full on adultery the night before her wedding is extremely upsetting to me and makes no sense, but i'm glad nothing came of it and I can sweep it under the rug in my brain

Guywithpants

I'm so glad you enjoy River so much, she's one of my favorite characters and her story only gets better.

Ben

I wouldn't say the Amy scene makes no sense, it just doesn't make sense in the way that Moffat wrote it, It could have made sense but he just missed the mark completely with it. Moffat says as much in the quote I posted above.

Brenda

Now I can’t wait for next episode

AnastasiyaK

So happy you love River so much!!! She is one of my absolute favorite female characters not just in Doctor Who but in anything! Super excited for you to see her story. And Alex and Matt definitely have insane chemistry together!

Darren Withers

Just putting it out there, River never said they were married, and the Doctor didn’t either. Last episode, what he actually said was “Yes… you’re right, I am Mr Grumpy today.”

Jason

Note Moffat doesnt regret that Amy thought this way, I agree with his justification for it happening, along with other issues surrounding Amy's life that I wont go into at this point for spoilers, the regret is that he played the scene for laughs. For spoiler reasons cant say much about what it results in, but I think the minisode that fits between the end of this episode and the next is very helpful in setting where the tone will go and might help ease some of your worries a little. Moffat of course already knew what he planned to do with this series, its just us viewers in the dark (that happens with Moffat a lot) we baulk at something he chooses to do, only for its explanation and the full understanding of it to come later down the line, and then you go "ah of course, I see where it was all going now." You have to be patient in this era of Who, some questions dont get answered for a very long time, just trust it all does somewhere, eventually in space and time all fit together. Even Amy coming onto the Doctor.

Liem

I’m so glad that Steven Moffat ended up admitting he regrets writing in the end scene of this episode.

Josef Schiltz

It was all a bit . . . timey wimey?

Josef Schiltz

However, there is one thing that we do know. The TARDIS gets inside a companion's head via a telepathic field that is connected through the Doctor. Someone who has been as mixed up as Amy - and messed around by psychiatrists, told that the Doctor wasn't real, had escapades as a kissagram , was about to get married and then the Doctor came back on the night before her wedding and then been through the experiences since as we've seen - is, though having handled all this extraordinarily well is, realistically, not going to know how to interpret what she is getting from this telepathic field. How is this going to be affecting her actions regarding her previous fixation with the Doctor?

Martin Heron

Last episode he did say "yes" when Amy asked if River was his wife, iirc.

LabyrinthSouls

Honestly Matt Smiths rage is one of my absolute favorite things about this version of the doctor.

Leo Cap

@Martin -- the full dialogue goes, "Is River going to be your wife one day?" "Yes... you're right... I am definitely Mr. Grumpy Face today" it's kind of a bait-and-switch -- the Doctor just ignores her question and answers a different one. I think Angela might have reacted too fast and missed that last part

Darren Withers

Thanks Lord Leo, I could have sworn I said that too, but obviously I wasn’t clear enough. 🫤 From context, I’m pretty sure Angela’s edited reactions are Martin’s first time views of Doctor Who.

Martin Heron

No, I did see all these years ago when they came out. Just remembered it as two separate scenes. I think because Amy asks him (or alludes to it, "she is so your wife" etc, several times)

Space Monkey Mafia

All I can add is that when it comes to foreshadowing, Moffat is like a where's Waldo picture while RTD is a giant neon sign. Sometimes literally a giant neon sign that says Bad Wolf.

Daniel Osorio

this is one of those shows that you have to watch EVERY episode of every season because there are too many past references, timeywhimey stuff

Project Cascade

Notice how in the forest, when the Doctor speaks to Amy, he's wearing his jacket :)

Melon Soda

I also did not like the scene between Amy and the doctor but like my brother acts like it completely ruins Amy as a character and like... It ain't that deep

Drake

for the love of god its a HUGE spoiler wtf your writing that mate

Drake

what ? i read it 10 times i dont get the meaning of your words xD

Drake

amy is by far my favorite companion

Melon Soda

So the scene of Amy kissing the Doctor, I don't really like it but my brother hates it and he seems to think it ruins Amy as a character
