FTR it's a p fair assumption that most of the Wehrmacht, German Army was very Nazified, there were exceptions but until really the last year the Nazi propaganda machine was p effective, additionally there were purges of those not sufficiently loyal and the German army committed many war crimes on par w the SS and gestapo. One of the reason the coup plot against Hitler in 1944 failed was that the main opposition from within the military came from the class of aristocratic Prussian officers, from the middle and high ranks, the men at arms were for the most part very loyal to Hitler and so betrayed the coup plotters when they learned Hitler was dead. So long way of saying it's safe to assume that German Soldiers were Nazis, maybe not as radical as the SS but still.

I don't remember Points being anywhere close to as emotional as Why We Fight, but you're an empath so maybe you'll have a different reaction to it. It's been great reliving this series through your eyes. Thank you for that!

Webster was threatening the baker, not Speirs. Also if you feel sympathy for the Japanese who endured allied bombing during WW2, its important to remember Imperial Japan was every bit as vile as Nazi Germany. If you need any proof of that look up Unit 731.

Michael Siegel

Regarding your husband: as a Jew myself, I find this difficult but necessary watching. It's accurate and grim without being exploitative. The framing device of the men playing music shows the contrast that the soldiers encountered in Germany -- an educated civilized populace who turned the other way while an unimaginable horror unfolded. The camps Easy liberated were uniquely bad. The Nazis were desperately trying to cover up what they'd done and force-marched prisoners from all over the Eastern Front into Germany for forced labor in makeshift camps. They were in such bad shape that many died after being liberated. The main reason Auschwitz was captured intact was because it was too big and the Soviets advanced on it too fast for it to be destroyed.

My great grand parents died in Imperial Japan, I’m very aware of Japans atrocities. That doesn’t mean I can’t feel sympathy for them.

Jason Camarena

That was Webster not Speirs that pulled his gun on the German baker, I think he was a baker.

Jay SMARTASS

This one was the hardest one for me when i first watched this series. It still shocks me how much the concentration camp renactors put their bodies thru for those scenes. Some of it was prosthetics but alot of it was them shedding massive amounts of weight too, to do the scenes justice. Godbless them for it..🫶

Sone

Yes that was Webster who pulled the gun not Speirs and yup it was a baker.

While I'm sure there are exceptions, I feel like it's good to see Schindler's list at least once. It's like Saving Private Ryan in that it is a hard thing to watch, but it gives a sense of the history that merely reading the facts can't. While such films are never exactly "history" they viscerally remind us of the history.

Kurt Yost

Many of the concentration camp actors were cancer patients.

Rory Owens

I always think of these townspeople and how easy it can sometimes become to just pretend something isn't happening, or that it's not as bad as people say, or even that it's necessary. Turn your head away and it's not really there. How much the German people knew about the Holocaust has always been a huge question, and it's one that Germany hasn't shied away from in educating its people about the evils of Nazism, and the path that Germany went down, from the economic crises of the 1920s to gassing and burning millions just because they were Other. Can people stand up and refuse to countenance this, when it's being dictated by their government? Can they hold to their morals and refuse to allow it or, at the very least, refuse to participate? "I was only following orders" wasn't considered a legitimate defence at the Nuremburg Trials, and it shouldn't be a legitimate defence any time that atrocities are committed. It's a cautionary tale, and one that too many people are failing to learn.

Hi, I am Hi.

This episode.... No matter how many times I have rewatched this show, this episode never fails to make me cry like a little bitch. The horrors that we humans can do to each other is scary as fuck. There are a lot of movies and shows that, when you see for the first time you cry your eyes out, but when you rewatch it multiple times, it is less and less, like you get "used" to it or because you already expect it, so it doesn't hit you as hard as the first time. But this is definitely the exception. Every. Single. Time. This episode destroys me.

I've no constructive comment, other than to say thank you for your thoughts and empathy, as always. As you mention, sometimes it helps to see other people care and feel about things, even difficult things, to know we are not alone. Hugs if appropriate, and give Drew a collective hug from the community, just because.

The thing is, the camp they found was "just" a concentration/work camp. Auschwitz and the like were located in occupied Poland, they were the true death camps. So as terrible as this was, it was only the outer suburb of Hell. As fucked up as that feels to write.

Yeah I get them confused too now and again.

HawaiiMongoose

It always feels to me when I see the violin case close at the very end that I’m seeing a coffin close.

Why We Fight was the hardest watch for me of the series. I also thought it was the best episode of the series, because of how it juxtaposed the frustrations of the soldiers at having to fight this long painful war and the realization at the end that everything they had suffered through was for a righteous purpose, because they were in fact fighting true evil.

Daniel Beringer

I have been watching this series for 24 years. The old man hugging and kissing that soldier will always bring me to tears. General Eisenhower deliberately visited a camp, Ohrdruf, to see for himself the atrocity. He cabled George C. Marshall to tell him what he saw. "But the most interesting -- although horrible -- sight that I encountered during the trip was a visit to a German internment camp near Gotha. The things I saw beggar description. While I was touring the camp I encountered three men who had been inmates and by one ruse or another had made their escape. I interviewed them through an interpreter. The visual evidence and the verbal testimony of starvation, cruelty and bestiality were so overpowering as to leave me a bit sick. In one room, where they were piled up twenty or thirty naked men, killed by starvation, George Patton would not even enter. He said he would get sick if he did so. I made the visit deliberately, in order to be in position to give first-hand evidence of these things if ever, in the future, there develops a tendency to charge these allegations merely to 'propaganda'." https://www.eisenhowerlibrary.gov/sites/default/files/research/online-documents/holocaust/1945-04-15-dde-to-marshall.pdf 2nd page, 6th paragraph. Eisenhower then requested journalists and congressional representative be flown out to the camps to witness first hand to witness the atrocity. "We continue to uncover German concentration camps for political prisoners in which conditions of indescribable horror prevail. I have visited one of these myself and I assure you that whatever has been printed on them to date has been understatement. If you would see any advantage in asking about a dozen leaders of Congress and a dozen prominent editors to make a short visit to this theater in a couple of C-54's, I will arrange to have them conducted to one of these places where the evidence of bestiality and cruelty is so overpowering as to leave no doubt in their minds about the normal practices of the Germans in these camps." https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Holocaust/Shaef/shaef_ikecable041945.pdf The only paragraph on the communication. ___________ I believe atrocities must be seen. I believe that horrors committed must be known. No dignity can be stolen from the victims of their murderers. Nazis have no power over the worth of a person. Show the atrocity, show the horror, love the people subjected to that horror, that atrocity. Honor them.

I just finished watching this edited reaction. I echo those who suggest watching "Schindler's List." But only when you're ready. ❤️ It was the most profound movie-going experience I've ever had, an imprint first made on me when I watched the film in late 1993.

Lee Aguera

Damn you can see the moment Gal's heart stops and her soul goes cold when Easy Company is pulling up to the camp. She knew it was going to be bad. One scene that always gets me is O'keefe in the rubble, haunted, and Perconte doesnt call him by a nickname or mock him - he's O'keefe now. He's a brother. He was here for this, he's part of the team now. Just that little detail of accepting him because he was here for the camp liberation. Haunting episode. As to Schindler's List...you don't need to Gal. Neither you or hubby would benefit from it. Its a great movie to be sure, but its soul crushing. I watched it in high school as part of our Holocaust studies and yeah...once is enough for one life time. Great reaction gal! Enjoy your vacation, and best of luck on the surgery.

Hasse Lillesol

Regarding the question of watching Schindlers List, I can't say for sure whether you or your husband can see it without feeling sick to your stomach. But if you feel like you and our husband are "up" for it, it's a really powerful movie, that is worth watching. Perhaps not a thing you should "react" to though, but on your own. I think overall it's a very important movie for all who can bear it to watch, as however awful the story the movie portraits is, it is still the reality of what has happened in our world. It's not pleasant or nice but it portrays the worst of humanity and keeping the truth of what has happened in our shared conscious mind is very important.

Cameron

Horrific history that feels all too relevant these days.

BMackVO

This was a rough one. But it's definitely cemented into you now what these men went through, and why they were the greatest generation, and why we owe them so much.

Wisdom of the Sphynx

Unfortunately there is really no way to prepare or warn someone about this episode without drifting into spoiler territory. If it is any consolation, I saw this when it came out on HBO and have seen it numerous after. And it has made me cry every single time 💔. Schindler’s List is a masterpiece but it will break your heart. Hope you are able to find something light to watch that lets you zone out ❤️‍🩹
