You should definitely check out kpop! I'm really only into one group, seventeen. They have 13 members and they're all super talented dancers and singers and they have great personalities, I think you'd love them!

Yes, the reaction I've been waiting for! So, this movie is not the best intro to Kpop music but maybe an appetizer to K-culture and Kpop? There were some deliberate Kdrama tropes in the movie! But yes, the soundtrack IS killing it as it's number one on almost every streaming platform. Btw, the VA of the three girls are different than the singing voices. And the group at the end credits is TWICE, the Kpop band (not the singing voices) that did a cover of Takedown for the movie.

Oh, yes! My kids became obsessed with this so I checked it out and loved it. The songs are currently living rent-free in my head. Apparently some people are annoyed that a kiss between Rumi and Jinu was cut. I'm good with it. They shared something far more important than a kiss: their vulnerabilities.

Huzzah, time for another KPDH re-watch! (For the algorithm, of course ... )

Josh Greiner

It also helps sidestep the 400 year age difference, lol

MooLake

I’d love to see you reacting to K-pop music videos! Especially BTS just because! xD

Michael Siegel

400 vs. 28 is still better than Twilight! :)

Personally, I think Gwi-ma was manipulating Jinu’s memories. If you watch again you can see him holding his sister’s hand and his expression is shocked when the guards separate them. I think he believed his family would go with him and was genuinely surprised to learn they couldn’t. He also looked guilty/ashamed when eating at the table and during the time period he was from, there would have been big societal consequences if he gave up his position to go back to them.

The tiger’s name is Derpy and the magpie is Sussy. The Tiger (with leopard spots) with a magpie is common in traditional art. The demons have ancient Korean faces with some modern styling. Even the patterns are stylized demon markings. Not to mention it takes place in Seoul for your soul.

Michael Wakeley

As a point of clarification, the girls at the end are members of the K-pop group Twice, who sang the Takedown cover for the end credits, and Strategy, the song that was playing when Rumi sent out the Golden single and Zoey and Mira were trying to go to the couch. The singing voices for the actual movie where different.

Jo

I've recently learned that EJAE, the singer for Rumi, spent years training only to be rejected as a lead singer for a KPop group so she moved to America and helped write these songs and Huntrix is the first female girl group to reach #1 on Billboard Top 100 since Destiny's Child. EJAE, after being rejected by KPop studios, is also the first female KPop lead singer to reach #1 on American charts. Just a wild story after being told "You're to old" by the KPop studios.

The music in this film was absolute FIRE! I've got every song by HUNTR/X in my active rotation (Plus one by the Saja Boys). It's hard to pick a single best song. I think it's a tossup between "Golden" (Which is the most complex and vocally difficult song to sing), and "What It Sounds Like" (Which is simpler, but more connected to the emotional core of the film). This is the first time I've been so solidly out of the zeitgeist in a while, but I wasn't as impressed with this movie as a whole as everybody else is. I thought it was okay -- certainly not a waste of time -- but I didn't finish it thinking it was the best animated film of the year. Except, like I said, for the music. 100% A+ #1 on that front. My preference is always for subtitles over dubbing, because they can capture more subtleties and nuance there. The example I always point to to illustrate my point is "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", after Jen has stolen the Green Destiny and is trying to live out her fantasy of being a wandering warrior. She is hassled by two random toughs and uses the Green Destiny to destroy their weapons, and they ask if she is related to Li Mu Bai, the sword's rightful owner. In the dub, she responds "I've just beaten him", while the subtitles say "He is my defeated enemy" (or "defeated foe"). "Just beaten him" could mean she met and killed him yesterday, while "defeated enemy" implies a long-running rivalry or other sort of meaningful history. Even without her telling a more complicated lie, we can tell she's implying more than just a single encounter. That cinched my preference for me.
