Kyle Taggart

SO EXCITED! let the magical journey begin!

Arronax06

I'm glad you're watching this show :) . Them not translating the written text in the dubbed version is a shame, it gives crucial information about how many years have passed between scenes :/ . For example, there were 20 years between Himmel's funeral and Frieren visiting Heiter :) . The first 4 episodes were released all at the same time, as a 2 hour special, so that may be why the end of the episode was a bit abrupt :)

Kyle Taggart

the translations are on Crunchyroll. If anything, the number up there represents years since Himmel The Hero's passing. :) Although I think sometimes there won't be a number up there.

Paulo

I only watched a few episodes of this show but I always thought it is an accurate representation of a dnd party.

Nightowl

I only saw the first episode shortly after it came out and it didn’t catch my interest but I’ll be following your reactions now. The German names still feel strange: – Frieren (verb): to feel cold, to freeze – Himmel (noun): sky, heaven – Heiter (adjective): cheerful – Eisen (noun): iron

Alkaris

When watching in a browser, the subtitles don't even work properly, even though there is a desktop app, there isn't one for MacOS.

Alkaris

If there's magic in the show, expect necromancy. I had put off from watching this for a long while because I wasn't sure about watching it, mainly also because I was watching other things too. Been trying to watch other new/old anime type stuff, there's a whole lot of fantasy level anime out there, more so today than there were 5-10 years ago, many worth watching. Awhile back I'd been watching "That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime" which is pretty cool one to watch, I would highly recommend it. Another I'd probably recommend is Fairy Tale.

EgregiousGrievous

You are in for a treat, this is a awesome anime with a great story! Watch Violet Evergarden next, it really good too. American Composer Even Call did the music for both anime. The music is what makes this show very special. The show is a slow burn but when there is action, top quality animation. The show has its slow and fast moment but don't be fooled, the slow parts are so meaningful. It may seem Frieren is episodic but the plot takes time to develop and is the reason why the show was so popular when it came out. Season two is coming out sometime in the beginning of next year so you are just in time.

Nathaniel Castle

This is a delightful surprise! Really happy to see you watch this one! Gonna look forward to watching this tonight!

Nathan Jasper

I've never seen this show nor the original so can someone answer if Fearne is the same Fearne that Ashley Johnson based her DnD character off of? Anyway, super excited to continue, I'm intrigued.

Michel Ferreira

Watch it with subtitles 'English' and audio 'English', and it should give you the translations. Just checked on Crunchy Roll and it showed for me

Some0neElse

let the endless crying start now! BTW this might be said already but theres no other anime called "Frieren". The only one. Also names are important here. They are mostly german and will represent the most dominant trait of each character... f.e. Frieren means cold

Arronax06

I don't think they are, they are very different characters :)

EgregiousGrievous

There is no original show, Frieren Beyond Journeys End is the first anime. Episode one explain that the adventure of the Party of Heros has ended its journey after 10 years of fighting the Demon King. We are meant to see what comes after as per the title of the anime. Yeah its confusing but that's why this show is different than a typical hero's journey since its already over and we didn't get to see it.

Pooofy

I haven’t really watched an anime I tried aot and I think I’ll like it but I don’t know if I can do it as my first anime. This however seemed a bit slower paced and I think I am excited to continue this

Howie

Rewatching it with you now. Been wanting to as season 2 is coming in Jan 2026. My first time was with sub, so it will be interesting for me to hear the dub and make comparisons. Man, I still love the music and artwork. So far, the English VAs seem to be good and doing the original justice. Still greatly appreciate the pacing of this anime. It's refreshing and so soothing. I think I'm more emotional watching this the 2nd time around. It's weird you don't see the translation of the text on the map scenes are they are present for me on Crunchyroll, even with the English dub. May you need turn on English subtitles? Anyway looking forward to more Frieren AND soon.... AoT season 3!

EgregiousGrievous

FYI, Frieren is based off of a Japanese manga (Comic) that's up to about 140 chapters. I think season one is the first 50 or 60 chapters.

funnylilgalreacts

I've tried every which way to have the subtitles for the Japanese writing and the closed captions for my old ass ears. I think Netflix nailed it so I'm watching with them from now on. Thankfully they all sync up perfectly

funnylilgalreacts

It is definitely a slower pace and it takes it's time telling the story. Much easier to keep up with than AOT

Nathan Jasper

Ah okay I assumed this was a continuation from another, thank you for clarifying!

AdmiralZhou

So glad you're starting this anime and I'm excited to rewatch with you! And ayyy the M&D shoutout ❤️

Frank (MetronV) Izzy

I've been told I needed to watch this, and I saw you watched it on Crunchroll. I have it on my list on Netflix. There's no significant difference between the two is there?

funnylilgalreacts

Absolutely no difference besides the captions/subtitle issue that I was having. Episode three and four I watched on Netflix and it was perfect.

Kyle Taggart

There is an English captions option on crunchyroll, you may have to actually select it, and it should provide the text for the little tidbits it puts on screen.

Kyle Taggart

also, season 2 of Frieren Beyond Journey's End begins in January of 2026! I highly encourage you to watch, it's only 28 episodes (so far!)

funnylilgalreacts

I tried the english captions on Crunchyroll too and it wasn't a good fit. Same issue I have with AOT, they have captions, but no Japanese translation. If you turn it to English language but not the CC is will translate, but not give you any captions. Netflix has both thankfully

DieWinterkirsche

I'm not sure, but the names of the characters seem to be hinting at their persona... Like Heiter (english: serene/cheerful) seems to wanting to have a good time, Himmel (sky) seems to have his head in the clouds, while Frieren (freeze) is emotionally cold/jaded.. I like that ^^

Nathaniel Castle

In my mind Frieren isnt a feel good show, its a slow paced show full of feelings. And the art and animation can be absolutely stunning in places. I think you will have a real good time with this

Wesley Allison

There isn't an earlier series. Their adventure is told in flashbacks-- brilliantly. The names are indeed evocative of the characters-- place names too. I am so glad you have gotten to this series. Season two is scheduled for early 2026. I'm also glad you're doing the dub. Normally I prefer subs, but I think the dub is much better for Frieren. Also, I've seen several different sub translations and some are better than others.

Tales of the Boojum

I've definitely thought you should watch this ever since you wondered what it meant for a long-lived character like the Doctor to befriend so many humans.

Thoko

I’ve been considering watching this show since I seen that Meesh & Dee are watching it

Frank (MetronV) Izzy

Oh and I accidently called it Hi Ren when I was talking about it at lunch today (because I've been listening to that song too much lately) to my kids (17 & 24) and they won't stop making fun of me now. ::sigh::

Ryan

I doubt I'll ever be able to watch the first episode without tearing up. The season started right around the time my mom's health nose-dived. The commentary about mortality felt very personal to me. All-in-All I wouldn't call this a happy anime, but I wouldn't call it a sad anime either....maybe somber? It is a wonderful show, and I am glad you're reacting to it!

Syre2xE

i was not expecting this and i like it

Ntrovert

I don’t know. I’d probably be ok with it. But I’m a free member, so I don’t really count, do I? I wouldn’t start another service to watch this, I guess.

funnylilgalreacts

Of course you can why wouldn’t you? You can watch it on Hulu, Crunchyroll and Netflix.

R

Howie you're not alone in finding it more emotional the 2nd time around. I got a bit misty during some scenes the first time around, but when I rewatched it those scenes hit me like a truck. Can't say more about that here of course, but there's a good video essay I saw on this subject a few months ago if you're interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Lds1Wo1Ge4

Kory Schonsheck

The text that isn't captioned for you is typically the number of years since Himmel's death, and then a blurb about where they currently are in the world.

R

You probably know by now, but just in case not, the text on the map at the beginning of the first episode said: "At the northernmost end of the continent, I arrived at a place that the people of this world call Heaven; Aureole, the land where souls rest. Many souls gather there, and I spoke with friends who once fought alongside me. – Flamme the Legendary Mage"

I've been looking for an excuse to join your Patreon for a while, this is a great one. I think you'll really like this show. Good time to mention, I have seen a few other people say this, but I also recommend you keep the idea of My Hero Academia in mind too! Based on the stuff you watch, I think you'd really, really enjoy it, and also the dub is absolutely top tier. As both a viewer and creator of reaction videos, dub videos are few and far between so please keep it up, it's wonderful fit for you. <3

Centarius

I think if you leave the audio on English and the subtitles/cc to English it will only translate the Japanese writing you aren't able to read. It does that at least for me on Crunchyroll.

Brian

This is one of my favourite ever shows, I'm so excited for the reaction. And as a bonus, I think this is an anime where the dub is actually better. The English voice actors do a great job, and the audio mix puts more of an emphasis on the incredible score

Whiffed

Frieren is def a good one. I'd reccommend vinland saga as well.

Jayson Phillips

I love this Anime but my fav will always be Sword Art Online because I love fantasy games and it connects me more, plus the romance and battle is amazing, didn't care for the movie much but season 2 really got to me in the feels!

Thomas Winget

Just a heads up: you transposed the i and e in Frieren in the collection title here on Patreon (individual post/video titles are correct). Not sure if that would affect people searching seeing the collection or not, otherwise I wouldn't bother pointing out something so minor.

funnylilgalreacts

Thank you! I think her name being “Free-run” makes me always put the “e” first. I have to actively try not to say “Fry-ren” every time

Thomas Winget

No problem! As for the names, I recently learned that a lot of them are German and symbolic as such. I wouldn't say that qualifies as a spoiler, but if you're worried that it is don't translate them I guess. I'm assuming since you didn't comment on any names that you don't speak German (nor do I). :)

Thomas Winget

SAO was a solid premise, though I personally wouldn't say it stuck the landing. A show I personally think is better (with a very similar premise and a solid English dub if that's your cup of tea) is Log Horizon. Strongly recommend for SAO fans!

Thomas Winget

Next time your kids make fun of you for it, tell them they should take some time to be distant. ;)

Thomas Winget

My experience is that when Netflix has both subtitles and translations for a dub, the subtitles are not CC but rather the subtitles you'd get watching it in Japanese. That is, they say roughly the same things but differently enough I find it very distracting. Hopefully that's not the case with this one!
