I’d say talyn is basically in an induced coma at this point. the talk crais has with him before being shut down, then the quiet “he’s gone” before crais walks off the bridge. and talyn is completely silent. for the first time. breaks my heart. I love the moments we get with john and aeryn. as she says, they’ve always worked well together, and we finally get to see that again. at the end, when she acknowledges they’re the same person, there’s that glimmer that maybe they can be perfect again. but john rightfully points out that no, he is his own person. “we started this together crichton. that’s how we’ll end it.” ugh. my poor heart. this is another divisive ep amongst the fans, as you can imagine lol. I’ve grown to enjoy it but as the first ep after a looooong hiatus I was initially unimpressed with the pig monkeys. didn’t realize ‘til much later that it was a younger ben mendelsohn. I’d be interested to hear what he remembers/thinks of this experience lol.

Yup, Ben Mendelsohn, looking like film director John Carpenter crossed with a blue rat. I never noticed he had a lisp before. Such a strange place to find a well-known actor, playing an intelligent(relatively), humanoid space rat in a weird sci-fi show you watched long before they were a name you knew. I-yensch bracelets are so fun. Instant Corsican brothers!

Notes from a Farscape fan: 1) Farscape being an Australian-American production based out of Sydney from '99 to '03 means most of the cast is Australian including a number of people who weren't super famous outside of the country at the time. Getting Ben Mendelsohn in to play a heavily-made-up joke character seems wild in hindsight, but at the time he was just a former child actor who did a stint on Neighbours. Also, absolutely wild use of special skills to identify a man based on your dental expertise. 2) Talyn is a tough one. We forget, because of him being a giant living gunship and all, but he is a very young child with serious behavioural issues. Him attacking Moya in this episode really feels to me like a child with anger management problems biting their mother in a rage. Problem is, this child has assault rifles instead of arms. I think it's one of the key reasons why the Builders never gave leviathans weapons - because you don't give them to children. It's heartbreaking, but there's no good outcome to a situation like that. They had to do something. 3) A brief aside to two Chiana moments that I think are notable, and get forgotten easily. She and Jool have always been at each other's throats, but Chiana foresaw her mourning for Jool. If Jool had died, she would have *mourned*. The deaths of 600 people is tragic, but she didn't personally mourn for them. She clearly considers Jool as a crewmate by this point. Secondly, when Rygel and D'Argo return, she's in a good place with D'Argo after all they've been through, and she kisses Rygel on the head! And Rygel makes no sarcastic comment, no judgements, no bitchy aside. In fact, he smiles. It's a tiny moment, but these people care about each other so much. 4) And finally: the power of this show. This is one of my favourite episodes, probably unsurprisingly given the major characters of one of the two plots, but way back when we first met Scorpy and only knew Rygel as the greedy, conniving slug, could you have imagined the two of them holding a whole plot together? It calls back to something I said very early on in this show about each character having their own relationships with every other character - and this is Rygel and Scorpius. Two master negotiators doing what they do best. These are two people whose greatest strengths are talking and plotting, getting themselves out of a hostage situation without external help. I love these characters.

Definitely the calm before the storm even tho things were anything but calm. Farscape really blends the emotional, the humor and tragedy so well. Quick correction it's a 2 parter coming up next not a 3 parter so you can be relieved lol.

WinterScape

The two CEOs, Rigel and Scorpy, negotiating is priceless. Seems like a good time to give a shoutout to the puppeteers and the voice of Jonathan Hardy. Amazing that this nuanced character is a puppet! And let’s also recognize how the whole team—from set design, sound design, and especially cast (Lani Tupu!) created a character that resonates for us emotionally. He’s so much more than a CGI exterior shot, a cramped, hot set, blinking lights & sound effects, and Lani giving voice to him with one side of the conversation. We love our Talyn! (Love the Boya label 😊)

Like all of the characters in this show, Rygel grew a lot over the course of the series. This show was certainly not the first TV series in history to have its characters grow and change over time -- I mean, it's sort of a fundamental rule of good storytelling that characters must evolve, so all shows *try* to do that, at least to some extent. But I always thought this show did that particularly well; that's one of the reasons it's so damned good. What's interesting about Rygel in particular is that, while even early on there were glimpses that he had positive attributes and skills that could help the crew, he has always remained a bit of a wild card. He is remarkably consistent in a way -- he is what he is, and what he is is a bit too selfish and a bit too vain for even his own good. That never fully changes, but I think that over the course of the seasons of this show, he is able to repress it more and more. And you can understand why. You kind of get the idea (at least I did) that Rygel was probably a pretty decent ruler of his people before he was deposed. He has a kind of inherent nobility to him that shows from time to time at moments where it is most called for. But he's also been damaged, learned not to trust others and to be more selfish, through his interactions with his treacherous cousin and the Peacekeepers who mistreated him for 100+ cycles. I'm not sure I'm ready to forgive him, exactly, but I can appreciate the reasons he is the way he is. I can empathize, just a little. Back in the day of Farscape's original airing the bad guys in this episode (Ben Mendelsohn and his partner in crime) quickly grew to become, in the fan community, one of the most hated species in the show -- not for what they did, but just for their repugnant manner, their hooting and howling and screeching. They even got a name -- "Frelling Blue Monkeys." They became the gold standard of annoying characters. People would say things like "Maldis is ridiculous and over the top, but at least he's not a Frelling Blue Monkey." On the other hand, their "catch phrase" (not sure whether we were supposed to regard it as such but I did) of "Why So Difficult?!" has become a meme for me that I've regularly employed when frustrated by situations IRL, particularly those involving technology (which is my job). When a printer keeps telling me it has a paper jam when it clearly has no paper anywhere in it *at all*, I have been known to say, in my best, screachy, FBM imitation, "why so difficult?" Sadly, the reference is lost on most people. But I enjoy it nonetheless. 😛

WHY SO DIFFICULT!? Rygel can really hold his own when the chips are down. His defense against the Charrids and the attack from Xhalax left him shot and gutted respectively. You give a Hynerian a gun and they give results. Talyn getting shut down is heart breaking. Aeryn is essentially his godmother, but even she knows that what he did was unacceptable. Letting the waitress lady on board was a good idea, other than the fact that the Moya crew is essentially cursed. I can’t see any new members living in our cast’s hell. Chiana’s smart but she’s stuck. I don’t blame her for wanting to leave before things get even worse. So far, Zhaan has died. Chrichton died. Dargo and Chiana’s doubles have died. Stark is gone. Rygel technically died for a moment before Stark saved him. Ancient Jack died. Aeryn’s mom died. Not to mention the people our crew meet (Different Destinations) . This shit sucks lol
