I really love how they made the smiths in this world out to be the opposite of their counterparts on regular Earth with August being the level headed voice of reason who just wants to help people, and his sons leaning more towards the bad side. That was a nice twist. I really wish they hadn’t killed him off so quickly.

True, but then who'se innocent? There's only so much you can do. If that's not good enough, your choices unfortunately are very limited. I don't see this Auggie put bullets in his son's heads. He loved them despite them being Nazi's. I see in that point his choices were: Kill his son's, leave his son's or do what he did. He clearly loved his son's so killing them or leaving thewm would have been so difficult, impossible perhaps. By staying in their lives he still had chance trying to affect decisions and do best to minimize the damage done Keith and Chris.

I feel like this is an extremely reductive look at Auggie's character. Most people don't adopt their worldview from their parents. Their worldview is shaped by the community they are a part of. It just so happens that most of the time, a person's parent's worldview is the same as the worldview of their community. If a person has vegan parents, but the rest of their family eats meat, as well as their neighbors, classmates, teachers, coworkers, friends; that person has a very low likelihood of becoming a vegan as they grow up. This is Auggie's situation. The ENTIRE WORLD is filled with Nazis. There's only so much he is able to do as a parent. Nazism on Earth X is as commonplace and normalized as eating meat in our world. Think about it for a second: Imagine there was an alternate dimension where 99% of the planet were vegans. They would see people like you and me as complicit in the systematic rape and torture of BILLIONS of innocent animals. Even if you happen to be a vegan, are you going out of your way to join a revolutionary movement to fight against the innumerable amount of cruelty and atrocities committed against so many innocent creatures? Probably not. And that's because it's so normalized and widespread that you recognize that it would be delusional to believe you would be able to make any meaningful change related to that issue. And that's not counting the fact that Auggie lives under an authoritarian government that puts people in work camps for speaking out against them. You are judging Auggie from the standards of our own world, where Nazism is now a fringe movement. I feel like that's pretty unfair.
