Lol love the Curse of the Black Pearl reference right out the gate considering the episode’s actual title 😂

I love the legends of Captain Henry Avery and Hugh Bonneville plays him so well... though I'm pretty sure the real Avery was far more ruthless than the BBC would allow haha This is such a fun episode

Steven

Matt Smith has said at a few conventions that he would phone up Arthur Darvill to laugh at him after reading in a script that he died again 😂

Lee Ross stands out here as the best pirate (he was the one who was taunting Toby about his dad). super authentic performance

I only knew about Henry Avery due to Uncharted 4 so I completely blacked out he was in this episode. I like how this is explains their real life crew disappearing although I prefer Uncharted's reasoning a little more but I'm biased.

I also get the sense that Rory always being in danger is a reversal of the trope of the female always being put into danger and needing to be rescued. That being said, it's kind of the Doctor's companions job to get into trouble. I think it's specifically in their job description. :)

Somewhere around here the fandom started the meme "O my god they killed Rory!"

Okay, now I'm chomping at the bit for the next episode. The next one is one of my top three episodes of all that I've seen. I'm really looking forward to the reaction.

Did you notice the major continuity error with the disappearing pirate? In the powder store after the other pirate has left you have 4 people Amy, Rory, Toby and the boatswain who had taunted Toby earlier. Then later when The Doctor and Henry re-enter the room there's no sign of the boatswain or explanation as to where he has gone.

I wish they had drawn out the CPR scene it would have upped the drama and made it not look like she gave up so quickly, but while she is doing it and the Doctor is looking sadder and sadder i remember thinking "my word he looks old here" its amazing how the thought of losing people ages the doctor so much and how good Matt is at showing that

SPOILERS!

Rach

My comment referred only to a trope in episodes reacted to already, that Angela had already commented on, with 0 hints about future episodes, I am always extremely careful about that because I loathe hints and spoilers. That said I've got rid of it to be on the safe side. I don't want any drama!

This is generally a fun episode. Good times,

Carl Wilson

I wonder if there was a cut for time.

I love that you get mad when Rory's in danger, but companions nearly die all the time. It's a wonder that they stick around! Rory gets the worst of it because he's on the third tier of the people on the Tardis, but it's not like Amy isn't in danger often, and the Doctor pretty regularly too. The original series ended every half-hour episode on a cliffhanger, usually with somebody's life in danger, so that's kinda the show's DNA. But everyone on the Tardis is a lot safer than, say, the only Black pirate on the pirate ship.

Carl Wilson

Someone mentioned Hugh Bonneville before, the actor who played the captain. But since you didn't say anything, I assume you don't know he was best known for playing the (mostly) lovable father on Downton Abbey for many many years (I assume a little later than this?). But generally a beloved veteran British actor. Also in the Paddington movies! I almost didn't recognize him with the beard. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Bonneville

Almost certainly I feel like they could have cut elsewhere to give the moment the gravitas it deserves

Amy: Why does it have to be me? Rory: Because I know you'll never give up. Amy: *gives up almost immediately* This is a fun episode. I like the interactions between the Doctor and Captain Avery throughout the episode - and I like the touch at the end where Avery flies to Sirius and sees it as the binary star the Doctor told him it was. I don't know why Amy hasn't told either Rory or the Doctor about the woman in the window. And again the episode closes on Schrodinger's Pregnancy.

Sorcerer Rumburak

Well, Rory, you and Captain Jack don't get it, when we say "YOLO", aren't you? 😉

Angela, now that you know The Silence, just think. Humans killing every Silence they see, then forget them after they kill them. Millions of dead Silence bodies decomposing on Earth throughout all of Time, just dead bodies. The smell of the air you’re so used to that you only notice once in a while? That time you tripped over something you swore wasn’t there? Meet the Silence. (Posted in Doctor Who chat as well if she misses this one).

I immediately thought of Galavant when I saw Hugh Bonneville in this episode! His Galavant appearance is almost a direct spoof of this role—and Angela, when you’re in the mood for something hilariously funny, I hope you’ll react to the two-season run of Galavant, which contains some of the best parodies of musical theater ever concocted! The songs are all written by Alan Menken, and sometimes he even spoofs his own Disney songs. 😊

Ben “Bentendo” Dawson

The next episode is so so good, another one where a guest writer comes in and knocks it out the park. Can't wait for you to see it.
