Frieren 1x27 FULL LENGTH REACTION | An Era of Humans

Serie is contradicting herself all the time. She says the field of flowers spell is useless, but judges them in a field of flowers; she says hiding your mana is a waste of time, but does it herself; she says she shouldn't take on humans as apprentices, but asks Fern to be her student. I don't think she's a "bitch", more like she doesn't understand her own emotions and lashes out like a child.

Andy

I think you're kind of jumping to a lot of conclusions about Serie here. She doesn't hate humans, and she didn't fail anyone for BEING a human Frieren herself said that Serie's judgment is always correct, she's just kind of blunt and rude about it. She failed these folks because they weren't ready to be first class mages yet and she could tell that even THEY knew it. They lacked both the skill and the confidence to accomplish the things that first class mages are expected to accomplish Her comments about humans were not an insult to their skill or intellect or anything, they were disappointment in the short lifespan of humans. Serie is quite possibly the most powerful mage in the world, but in a way that also makes her completely ALONE in the world. To me, it seems like what she wants is an equal, but it takes nearly a century for a human to reach even a somewhat comparable level of skill to her own... and then they die. She keeps telling herself to just stop taking them on as students because of this, but when she sees a promising mage she can't help the desire to teach them Realistically, the only person who COULD reach her level and then continue living is Frieren, but Frieren doesn't want to do that. She spends her life working on "inefficient" skills and searching for fun, cute folk spells instead of training to reach her full magical potential, and that irritates Serie, like watching someone with the potential to be a world class musician turn down your lessons and record deal to instead travel around asking everyone she meets to teach her their favorite nursery rhyme

serie is after ambition and takent her issue with humansis they short lived losing flambe hurt her and never seing humans reach the potential she saw in them hurts her so she doesnt want take on mages who wont reach their potential due to short life

DO NOT READ THIS COMMENT UNLESS YOU'VE SEEN THE NEXT EPISODE I think a lot of these Serie comments come with the knowledge of the next episode. Her reaction is perfectly understandable imo.

Arronax06

Did I mishear, or did you say "I can't believe Denken didn't get it" :) ?

Rime Pendragon

Serie, like all elves, is not really in touch with her emotions. Frieren is getting better at it, but even she is often incentive to others emotions.

To me, the significance of Serie musing that Lernen never noticed her fluctuations is that her well of mana is far greater than any other character so far. Lernen, who was able to noticed Frieren’s fluctuations, said that her actual well was as great as Serie’s. So Serie is also an expert at suppressing her mana, but the amount she allows people to see is so great that it terrifies them. Her actual well is several times greater.

R

It's like she found the perfect balance between the demon tactic of intimidating people with mana and the Flamme tactic of hiding it completely. 😆

Howie

Ummm.. where did you see that Denken failed the exam?  🤨 Wonderful episode and reaction. Probably the best non-action episode for me. And re-watching with you allows me to really pay attention to how great the score is.

Believe me, I felt silly when the next episode started, and she kept seeing more people. It didn’t even occurred to me that there was more coming.

funnylilgalreacts

Yep, I sure said that. With my full chest and thought I was correct. Until the next episode started in humbled me greatly.

Serie wants every individual to reach their maximum potential. Their race has nothing to do with it. Fern, like Lernen, was able to see the fluctuations in Serie's mana, which as we've seen, other first class mages cannot do this. It took him a lifetime to reach his level, but is timid, and did not push himself to become the mage Serie knew he could be. That's what disappoints her. This individual she took under her wing is capable of so much, but did not seek it. Fern, however, is on some level already Lernen's equal. The era of humans, as Serie and Frieren speak of it, refers to a period where the progress of mages will now grow exponentially. It's like our world with the industrial revolution, then the Wright Brothers taking us to the skies, and within one generation we've extended our reach to space. The knowledge and experience passes down, and mages in this new age can attain what was once the height of their craft, and step beyond it. The key point, for now, is that Serie's intuition is correct, as Frieren stated. Anyone she failed so far simply were incapable of imagining themselves as first class mages.

Knowing now what I know, I wouldn’t say the same things about her. But I didn’t know anything about her other than ripping up Flamme’s will, and then saying she was a disappointment. Nice people don’t say and do things like that.

funnylilgalreacts

I wish she could express that rather than talk about humans with distain.

funnylilgalreacts

I mean she’s supposed to be the adult in the room so that’s the only way that I can take it is that she’s being mean just to be mean. It’s not until the next episode that I understand her better.

Arronax06

I get it though, the "You fail" section was so quick, it's easy to miss who was and wasn't in there :)

demonic-myst

She not better than frieen at comunication and emotions main deference is frieen has began to try in last few decades while she has locked herself away trying to create flames dream the only reason she even doing this is because of flames dream to honour her in her own way remember it was in flames will

Did you notice that when Himmel said the flowers were beautiful, he was looking up at Frieren and not down at the flowers. Pretty sure too he loved Frieren ever since.

Kyle Taggart

I've waited for this moment!!! Truly...the flower spell, the "pointless spell", is the spell that saved the world!! :) Without it Himmel wouldn't have teamed up with her, and brought her along the 10 year journey to defeat the demon king! Also remember she used the spell with the hero party before, and Heiter and Eisen were dancing in them? It was Himmel's favorite. Also a tiny detail from a recent episode, she used that giant rock golem in the replica fight, and there's a scene way back where she made a smaller golem once and it danced to Heiter and Eisen's delight! Each time I watch this show...I learn more and more!

Andy

That's... kind of my point? The character has only appeared in like 2 or 3 episodes by now and as far as we know has done nothing wrong other than be sorta rude a couple times. And instead of just going "wow she's rude what a jerk what's that about" you jumped to MUCH MORE EXTREME assumptions that she must be racist and vile and actively trying to make the lives of Frieren and any human she comes across worse because she is a terrible person and hates them It's a big jump on very little information

I have a father that is a lot like Serie. I could read her like a book from the very first interactions we see with her. Growing up with a person like that really puts you in tune with the whole "actions speak louder than words" mantra. I could tell from all of her actions that Serie is incapable of understanding and vocalizing her emotions effectively. I love that our author created a character like her and was able to peel back the layers of her onion throughout her screen time.
