Very glad to see your reaction to this movie!! They did an excellent job. I think Victor's treatment of his creation annoyed me so much but was such a critical part of both characters psychology qnd psychological development. I also found it interesting that Mia Goth played both Victor's mother....and William's wife...wondered of that was more to illustrate HOW Victor saw her rather than how she really looked...

I had a feeling you would like this movie. It really surprised me. I went into it thinking it would be another monster / horror movie of something. I did not expect so much humanity and empathy. just a great movie.

mercury was used as a curative for thousands of years and was especially used to "treat" syphilis from the 1500s until the mid 20th century about 450 years until we learned it was toxic

I've got mixed feelings about this one. It looks great, the performances are great but some of the changes from the book dont sit well with me. I thought giving Victor 'daddy issues' was both cliched and unnecessary. Not a huge fan of the changes to Elizabeth, both to her character and in making her the wife of Victors younger brother and some sort of elicit forbidden fruit, the original novel is making a point about the treatment of women in how it depicts Elizabeth and how she is treated within the narrative, to enlarge her part, give her more agency and 'modernize' her ironically undermines Mary Shelley's original feminist point about her. I also have reservations about switching getting the body parts from the charnel house and therefore good chance from deceased criminals, thus explaining in part the monsters tendency to anger and outbursts of violence, to dead soldiers from the battle field, you would think young men pointlessly killed in battle would be more likely to be empathetic in their rebirth rather than prone to more violence. But my bigger issue was with the monster, he isnt a monster, there isnt anything monstrous about his appearence. Tel Toro said about his monster that "I dont want him to look like an accident victim, I want him to look like something newly minted. First born. So I do no scars with stitches or blood. I wanted to make him beautiful. If Victor has been looking forward to making that it should look superior to man." I appreciate the thinking here, I just dont think it works for the story. Especially the section with the blind man in the cottage- the whole point of that is because he is blind he does not judge the monster on how it appears, and its only when those with sight return they immediately become hostile to him. Except in this version the monster looks better than the average pox-ridden peasant of the day, especially once he has grown a head of long black hair and is wearing his hood and cloak, there is nothing in his appearence that is particularly monstrous by the standards of the time to explain peoples reaction to seeing him. It undermines part of the books moral message about not judging people on outward appearences. And whilst in the book the monster is stronger than the average person, they are not superhero strong nor are they immortal and unkillable, I found those odd choices to make too and not sure why they were done other than to inject artifical over-the-top action scenes into it like it was a Marvel film.

Prometheus is from Greek mythology. Titan. Gave us (humanity) fire.

Sorry. I hadn't watched your post commentary. I see now that you looked it up yourself.
