This feels strangely familiar, like I saw it in a dream a few days ago...

Cen

Seeing as you mentioned its ep11 are you going to release 2 in one week so the Christmas ep comes out on the 24th?

Sorcerer Rumburak

What's behind the Doctor's door - his greatest fear? Have you noticed the TARDIS Emergency Bells, as the door opens?

Cleverusernamed97

It never clicked the first time I watched it, but the house and car were the same ones from the first episode, right? Because the Doctor is catching up to his death from the first episode. Am I allowed to say that? It's not really spoilery because it's already happened for us, right?

Alkaris

Cloister Bells, they have a name for them.

Alkaris

This is a really fun episode I think, a little mystery in a strange place. Fear is subjective, because it can be any number of things, or a collective number of things all at once. Darkness would be one thing. The thought of not existing, or trying to imagine what it was like before I existed, or after existing, and seeing nothing but a deep black darkness of nothing. I was once trapped in a room in pitch darkness one time when I was at someone's house. Everyone ran out the room to go watch Mr. Bean on TV, and I was left alone in a room, playing with some toys sitting on the floor, and the last person to leave turned the light off in the room and shut the door behind them, leaving only me in pitch dark, unable to see or get out.

The Doctor is 909 in this episode. There are 200 years he needs to live before he gets to the beach in Utah.

Alkaris

The car was definitely in a previous episode, the one when they ran through the field in the VW Bug, then River Song shows up in that red car. I don't recall the house being present in previous episodes, though it's quite similar to the episode where The Doctor becomes roommates with Craig in his flat.

Nathan Jasper

Always loved this episode, especially being in the hotel business. It's such a cool concept, every visitor having their greatest fear in a room. My greatest fear is pain. I'm not afraid of death itself but pain of death terrifies me. Pain of abandonment, pain of loss... etc

Cleverusernamed97

I guess I gotta rewatch the first episode but if I remember correctly we see Amy and Rory living there as they watched that old movie The Doctor cameo in lol.

Jeremy B

But for the Amy and Rory we’re seeing in this episode, the events of The Impossible Astronaut are in their past. So when they received the blue envelopes inviting them to Utah, they must still have been in their old house?, not this new one?

Cleverusernamed97

I went back to the first episode, and maybe you're right, but we never see the outside of the house they were staying in, but Rory did say something about two months ago, the doctor said he would keep in touch. And since the first episode hasn't happened yet for the doctor that would mean this would have to be the house from the first one...I've gone cross-eyed, so I could be wrong. I only watched the series once, so this is my 2nd time rewatching, but I think that's what's going on at least. I can't really remember. Edit: I think I was just overthinking it lol.

Gotta love those mild references to Classic Who episodes, in this one. Just one casual line tells you they are vaguely connected. It's one broadcast from the late 70's - early 80's. The costume in that story is.... quite unforgettable. Hey, it was the 70's, so having your monster of the week clobbering along in thick thick thick platform shoes, gets a happy pass of hilarity. lol

Nathaniel Castle

my Fear would probably be my own rotting corpse in bed, dying and being forgotten nobody checking or caring. Or maybe tiny gremlin monsters with slug fingers that like to touch peoples faces! Both equally spine chilling!

Another point is because he now knows about his death when he downloaded it from the Tesalector (or however it's spelt) he also knows he doesn't have long left either so this situation was like cold water being poured over him to learn when to say goodbye. Really like episodes where they explore the Doctor and the companions relationships/patterns etc There's so much to unpack and thought this was a good dig into it. Rita usually comes up in discussions of like best people to never be the companion type chats, she was excellent in this. Also Matt was great too, from his anger at the cowardice of that alien he talked to after Howey's death to his sadness at being with young Amelia and then Amy at the end, and in the Tardis on his own, nailed all of it.

John

My first time watching this, I assumed the Doctor saw himself in his room. It makes sense him unceremoniously dropping off Amy and Rory. He did the same with Sarah Jane Smith in Classic Who. He told Rose that humans grow old and die, but he goes on. He knows Amy and Rory will one day die even if he's not the cause and if he stays around long enough, he'll have to witness that. On some level he was saving Amy and Rory, but on another he was saving himself from the pain of losing them. I think for the Doctor being alone isn't as bad as losing people. And maybe he thinks that since he hasn't witnessed Amy and Rory's deaths, they're always alive and he can always visit them any time.

John

"Rory, in the hallway, with a mop..." What is this, a recasting of "Clue?"

Carl Wilson

It was great to watch this episode again with you. Lots of clever puzzles to it, and real emotion too. I think I assumed that the Doctor saw himself in his room, maybe in some moment when he was being a little monstrous, maybe himself in the Time War. I can't imagine he fears anything else more. But that is just a guess. It could equally be that he saw the scene he describes - standing over Amy and Rory's bodies. He was so upset by Rita's death. One question: At what point after having made this decision does he go buy a house and a car? Wasn't he with the Ponds in the Tardis the whole time? ... I know, timey-wimey stuff. I guess it's quite possible that he goes to buy the house and the car in the past after he leaves them, so it would all be ready when they arrived.

Matthew Case

I always with no doubt thought that the Tardis was in his room. I always thought it sounded like the Tardis and you would see the white strip in his eyes of the Police Public Call Box Sign. For me it makes sense that the Tardis haunts him the most cause it brings him so much joy but also so much pain.

Peter Powis

My favourite episode of season 6! Along with the Girl Who Waited. Loved the emotion, the mystery, the horror, the heartfelt connection to the people and as a person of faith, it ticked all the boxes for me. Rita would have been an amazing companion! The most impactful scene was when she died. I cried! And then the ending - Amy and the Drs hug before he leaves was powerful and heart-rending... Just loved the whole episode. And David Walliams as an alien!!

Peter Powis

oh wow, both traumatic!!

Peter Powis

Oh yes, the Nimon! This minotaur was a distant cousin the dr said!

Ejigantor

This is one of my favourite episodes of Doctor Who. It's just so good, in so many ways. The creature had a god complex. The Doctor has a god complex. And the ship is a god complex. As to what would be in my room, I don't think it's just a fear, but specifically a fear that drives you towards faith. I would walk into my room and once I got to the middle the floor would cease to exist, forcing me to believe in the floor to keep from falling into a vast abyss of nothingness. (It's a thing from a movie I watched in the 90s that lodged in my brain in a particular way)

Ejigantor

Yeah, it sounds like the Cloister Bell; I think it's the TARDIS with the crack in it when it started to explode, because he still doesn't know why it happened. Or else something (anything) that would be [Spoilers]
