Back when this first aired I thought the killing of DK and his wife was unnecessary. I still kinda do, but not as much. This is an episode I've come to appreciate a bit more over the years. There was no Pilot in this episode and that upsets me. I wanted to see Bobby meet Pilot. Actually, I wanted to see everyone meet Pilot. Because Pilot is the BEST, Pilot deserves ALL the friends. I saw this episode while I was on vacation, I insisted that I had to watch it, even though I was among other people. So they were kind enough to watch it with me, though they had never heard of it. Boy was that a mistake, this was probably the worst episode to be someone's first episode. There's so much in it that you just wouldn't care about if you hadn't seen anything leading up to it.

Great episode and kudos to Farscape for returning Crichton to Earth and not making it the series finale.

Jack's speech was my favorite part of the episode. My second favorite part is when D'Argo flies his ship down and shoots through the building to vaporize the alien. The Christmas Eve alien attack reminds me of the horrific visions he was having earlier, when Peacekeepers crashes his and Aeryn's wedding and shot everyone. And it's also a micro scale example of what John is afraid of - aliens showing up and attacking his home and his people. I was not as upset about DK For one thing, I didn't come into the show with any familiarity with the actor, and without that multiplier I didn't develop much attachment to him over his sparse appearances. It's unfortunate, sure, but it's not unusual for an episode of Farscape to have a body count. And from a more cynical perspective, something needed to happen to someone else - not John and his immediate family. After all, if it was just the family assault, it would be hard to prove it hadn't been faked to garner support for John's global initiative - especially since security guy didn't survive to testify. And of course from a TV show perspective it's going to be more impactful on us, the audience, if it's someone we know and not just Random Diplomat In Suit #4 and Nerdy Scientists #2 and #7. Also, I like how the reception of the Earthers was portrayed; not as terrible as John's worst fears as we saw back in S1 when he first met Wormhole Alien Jack, but distrustful and cautious enough to be plausible versus the "Hey cool, welcome to our society fellow sentient beings" that would be how I'd feel but isn't at all realistic.

my only pet peeve with this show and other scifi/fantasy shows is when the other races constantly point out that humans are primitave cause they always fight amongst themselves, but we have multiple examples from pretty much every race that they fight amongst themselves or commit other terrible acts of violence, like in the ancients fake earth episode, they say even the peacekeepers wouldnt experiment on their prisoners but Crais literately threatened crichton with that in the first episode and scorpius was trying to cut open his brain In this episode Chiana says they fight amongst themselves when her own brother is leading an armed violent rebellion against her government Its the trope to point out that humans cant be united but in a show like farscape where no one person let alone no one race is completely good or evil just seems like lazy writing and they point the trope out in every episode that they talk about earth, bugs the crap out of me Ok rant over lol this episode is one of my favorites of the show and poor DK didnt deserve it The creators always said in shows like this you only return to earth when you run out of ideas, but I think they actually had good reasons and it works in the story to return to earth now always thought it would have been a cool later season or spin off if moya or another leviathan ends up at earth and since its so far from leviathan space they take some earth people exploring so more star trek or stargate style of show cant wait til next week great thing about farscape even an episode that seems like a filler/monster of the week always has great character moments that affect the show moving forward

You make a really good point about the others commenting on the disharmony of Humanity, but one mitigating factor is all those other societies with their divisions are spread across multiple planets; we're all clinging to the side of the same spaceborne rock. I'm sure our planet will become more harmonious when differing factions can bugger off to other stars.
