It’s 100 years before Game of Thrones

So far I love this show with every new episode a little more...😍 The Aegon reveal was not as surprising as the way how it was revealed. The practical effects of the circus folk in their show are amazing...🤩 Okay, so now we know where the two missing brothers are or at least were. I can't wait to see where it goes from here.

Egg is not "that one", the Mad King's name is Aerys. Although the prophecy didn't seem to imply Egg would be a good king either. I haven't read the books so I expected the reveal later but the way it was shot was great. And Aerion is a dick but it's not like "a play where the dragon dies" can't be viewed as political commentary, and free speech was not invented yet. :)

Yes people do die in the jousting tournaments

Egg isn’t the mad king but he was related to him. Egg is the great grandfather of Daenerys and great great grandfather of jon snow.

As a book reader they have done a great job on this series so far. The short stories and their respective comic adaptations are some of the best Game of Thrones stories out there. I really like all the practical effects, and what CGI there is looks really strong. I think even after you finish the season you should consider reading the graphic novel at least.

The guy who plays Aerion is really, really good, he's only had like three scenes and he's done an amazing job at being absolutely loathsome. It's rather immediately obvious in the book that Egg is more than what he seems but Dunk being kind of a dumbass never realizes it until the big reveal.

The thing that gets me about the scene between Dunk and the master of the games by the river is that, even though its a dishonorable proposition, I think the master went to Dunk because he's quietly rooting for him. He's seen Dunk in every episode and knows he's a simple, honorable man who is currently in over his head. Given the conduct of the other lords and knights present, we know there are many who'd have jumped at the opportunity. In the end he still chose to approach the no name knight. It's wrong but I genuinely think there was some kindness in his choice.

I really really like this show. I can't help but root for the main characters and have so much empathy for their situations and their goals. I'm sure their outcomes have been told in GoT and the book readers but so far all I know is what I've seen and I think it's really good. I haven't watched GoT since it came out so I dunno the outcomes enough to spoil this show or HotD so I'm hoping I can learn it as I watch but I'm prepped to get spoiled.

If we're to believe that dragons no longer exist and are merely fodder for stage plays, it would make sense that Aerion would take offense to a stage performer re-enacting the slaughter of a dragon. He saw the bad ending, which is likely a depiction of real events and unfortunately took his anger out on Tansell.

Stu Kay

Not quite. The tourney at Ashford takes place in 209 AC. The very first episode of Game of Thrones is 297 AC. And Maester Aemon (Egg's brother) died in 300 AC at 102/103.

dys

Aerion wouldn't have seen the "bad ending", the last dragons died 50+ years before he was born and they were small and sickly by that point, not slaughtered by knights.

I dunno if the show really intended to hold the reveal of who Egg was until this episode or if it was supposed to be obvious by this point... I've read the short stories so I already knew. If they did intend to hold it, Angela's obviously way too savvy to miss all the hints before now :)

Jaime Unson

The episode’s title, The Squire, pretty much assured a reveal. Egg becomes Aegon (V) the Unlikely. The Mad King, I believe, is his grandchild, Aerys II.

I always forget WHO the Mad King is. Thank goodness it's not Egg 😢

Roaring Mouse

The story begins at Eggs reveal.

I agree with dys that the show made it fairly obvious. I don't know, I'm torn on it. On the one hand, I definitely prefer a twist that is foreshadowed too much than too little. On the other hand, the dramatic reveal felt almost comical here because come on, right? The best reading is probably that maybe it's supposed to be obvious but the reveal is not really about the reveal, it's about the twist in the narrative that comes from the reveal, how the plot is turnt upside down from what Dunk did and how Egg intervened, and about how it will feel like a betrayal to Dunk no matter if it was obvious to us.

Christophe

Umm okay I suppose the cat's out of the bag now since Angela obviously saw this comment so it's too late to say spoiler warning, but hello, spoiler warning?? Don't worry about me, I know all about this, but just because we know now that Egg is a prince doesn't warrant spoiling his whole life story? ^^' Wtf are you doing man

Sending love, the reactor intense moments could be a nice running gag
