YES FINALLY!!! I’ve been waiting for the beginning of this season for you to go to this episode because of how much you enjoyed Oswin from episode one of the season

Leo Cap

i’m only at the beginning of the episode so forgive me if i’m clarifying something that you figured out for yourself at a later point— but Vastra and Jenny are indeed married, Jenny just poses as her maid to avoid the social taboo

Paulo

I lost it when she said pond.

Lintrinsic

To answer your question about what I thought when I first watched this: IIRC Karen Gillan & Arthur Darvill were known to be leaving and Jenna Coleman was announced as joining the show all over the British press before series 7 aired. So Oswin, the departure in episode 5 and then Clara then a modern Souffle Girl at the end was a total mindfrig, which in lieu of a surprise which you rarely got as a British viewer, was fantastic to see unfold.

Michael French

I don’t think the London underground is relevant to later episodes, but the great intelligence was originally introduced during the second doctors time, and I do believe that the London underground was involved there, and considering that takes place in 1967 this is sort of a prequel to those events

Frank (MetronV) Izzy

Which mini-sodes are we talking about? While not my favorite Christmas episode, it's like saying Chocolate Chip Ice Cream isn't my favorite ice cream, but I'll still eat it every time. :) I think the "Victorian values" might be a British thing, but you'd have to ask someone from there to see what they think. This episode had a lot of moments that I absolutely enjoyed, and the Great Intelligence has been a Doctor Who antagonist in the past (pre-modern Who), which is why the Doctor mentioned that there was something familiar about it.

Chris Miller

Yes when you picked up your phone I was like NO STOP STOP STOP!!!! LOL :-)

James Ward

''Do I know her?'' Oh yes. You most certainly do. You just have to remember. Welcome to Clara.

Gallows Girl Amy

FWIW I was just as baffled by the whole Clara/Oswin thing at the time. The Great Intelligence was an enemy in the Second Doctor Pat Troughton's era way back in 1966. The Second Doctor wore a bow-tie too. Bow-ties are cool. A lot of good stuff was created in 1966. Me for one. So yeah, the London Underground map circa 1967 is a Classic Who Easter egg relating to a subsequent episode where the Doctor fought the GI in, you guessed it, the London Underground.

James Fleischman

Richard E Grant has appeared in Doctor Who before in the Comic Relief special "The Curse of Fatal Death" (1999) - well worth a watch. And also voiced the Doctor in the 2003 animation "Scream of the Shalka".

Lintrinsic

There's a whole list of minisodes leading up to the 50th anniversary, some are a little spoilerish IMO. I think the Night of the Doctor adds context you don't get otherwise (keeping it vague) although on the surface it looks like a nostalgia trip. I personally think that's the most important one to watch (and the one I'd most like to see.) There's a Day of the Doctor TV trailer, that to this day makes my Whovian heart pound too.

John

You don't know how it's possible or how Clara/Oswin reappeared. Neither does the Doctor. THAT doesn't happen often. :) I love the music they did for Clara's theme. It's so whimsical and adventurous.

Dani

While this may not be the best Christmas special story wise I do think the addition of Vastra, Jenny, Strax, and Clara more than make up for it so I always find it to be a fun watch.

OfficiallyGames

Screaming at the screen when you picked up your phone and started searching lol

Kevin (GiantFutures.com)

I’m so happy that you are finally here! This is one of my most rewatch episodes of who, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the snowman. Clara is one of my favorite characters in the entire series, and this episode shows so much charm and so much chemistry and it’s the only reason the episode exists and it is still worth it. I can’t wait for you to see what happens on the search for her. Also, “I don’t like when the doctors are kissed “? Just wait until 12s first kiss. 👀

Lazzy

"Does every companion need to be on that level?" No they do not and it's why Donna is my favorite.

Ben

One on the main reasons why Jenna Coleman was cast as Clara was because she was the only person they auditioned who could talk as fast as Matt could!

OfficiallyGames

New Tardis Interior (and the reason for the split / break in season 7) was because the production were moving studios and it worked out cheaper to build a new tardis interior than try and move the old one so decided to go for something new instead of just remaking, kinda a way to also mark the split/break in the season also.

Riku Kurosaki

Thank god you put your phone down, if you had continued to look up Oswin, you would have exposed yourself to MASSIVE spoilers

Ben

The spilt was mainly down to Amy and Rory leaving and also the fact that they wanted a run of episodes in 2013 for the 50th anniversary.

Literaltruth

The London Underground map here is an easter egg. The Great Intelligence is a relatively minor villain that appeared in two episodes of the 2nd Doctor series - the one which is the most famous is where the 2nd Doctor prevented the intelligence from doing something in the London Underground in 1967. Because this special is basically the start of a big run of episodes leading up to Doctor Who's 50th anniversary Stephen Moffat decided to bring back this kind of obscure classic villain and set up an easter egg where the Great Intelligence was in the London Underground in 1967 fighting the second Doctor because of something the 11th Doctor did in this episode. The Doctor doesn't really remember the Great Intelligence here because from his point of view, the last time he saw it was like 700 years and 9 regenerations ago.

Literaltruth

This is a big part of why I love these reactions. You're right, living in the UK we never get to be surprised about a regeneration or a new companion because it's all over the press - it's oddly satisfying to see someone watch it and get the surprises we weren't allowed to have.

Nathaniel Castle

Richard E Grant is an amazing actor ("Withnail and I" is a must watch). I love how in Matt Smith's Xmas specials they really lean into the magic of the Doctor, the staircase into the clouds is beautiful. Madame Vastra, Flint and Strax should have definitely been a spinoff show with them solving crimes in Victorian London.

Purple Nurple

I would suggest she watch this as some sort of 50th anniversary celebration. It's fun and campy

Purple Nurple

I've been waiting for this episode since you loved Oswin and wanted her as a companion lol. And watching it whilst drinking wine is even better lol. Jenna does an amazing job in this episode - in terms of the kiss, it seems to be written that every companion kisses the Doctor at this point haha - even one offs like Kylie Minogue/Astrid lol.

Martin

'It looks like snow but isn't' I think was the line they used, so a parasitic form that needs a host to learn and then grow, and in this instance was using the ice and the snow to do its thing basically. Madame Vastra is played by the same actress who played Aliyah in Cold Blood (the prisoned one who was killed), she was so good they brought the actress back! Her, Jenny and Strax are amazing! Strax is the best butler you could ask for lol There was some time between episode one and this one when it aired but I think at the time it was all spoiled anyway as I think for us at the time we knew Jenna was coming in but her appearing in episode one was the surprise! How's that for timey wimey! But Jenna is fantastic!

Alkaris

There's always some connection to the Ponds. The mid-season Xmas Specials was a first for Doctor Who because of the scheduling between filming and stuff.

Jeremy B

I know right! I was shouting, don't look Angela, don't look! :)

Jeremy B

One of my absolute favourite Christmas specials, much more so than the Runaway Bride or the Titanic, etc. It’s got that dark Dickensian / Victorian setting mixed with some truly magical sequences. The staircase into the clouds is just beautiful. And as you picked up, very definitely some Mary Poppins vibes going on. The term ‘Victorian values’ would be very familiar to a British audience as shorthand for the 19th century’s emphasis on morality, duty, personal responsibility, and a strict work ethic. With an emphasis on the class system and respectability, labour was often exploited, including children. The thousands of factories that sprung up in major cities as part of the industrial revolution were often dangerous and unforgiving – while providing work and fuelling Britain’s empire…. Then there were ‘poor houses’ – rough, residential, and employment-based institutions for the destitute, elderly, and disabled. They were designed to reduce ‘reliance’ on welfare but often saw people living in extremely harsh conditions. Dickens shone a spotlight on the injustices of this era through his novels – for example Oliver Twist, Scrooge, etc, etc. The concept of Victorian Values is still widely understood these days through Dickens’ enduring work even if the term isn’t. And there are those seeking power around the world who crave a return to some of the practices / ‘principles’ of those years. There were some enlightened industrialists who were exceptions to the rule like Titus Salt who built Saltaire, a model village with neat stone houses for his workers (much better than the slums of nearby Bradford) with modern facilities and recreational activies. I love that The Snowmen doesn’t just pretend the events of Angels Take Manhattan never happened. It feels right that the Doctor is grieving and withdrawn from the wider world. And even more fitting that it’s the word ‘Pond’ that finally wakes him from his enforced retirement. Amy’s glasses are a heartbreaking nod to his lost friends. The BBC announced before Series 7 that Karen and Arthur would be leaving halfway through the season and that Jenna was joining. So, it was a real shock when (a) she appeared in Asylum of the Daleks and (b) Oswin was killed off at the end. But then Moffat’s going to Moffat, right??!! I’ll say no more about Clara or her mystery, but as you’ve picked up, she’s got fantastic chemistry with Matt and lights up the screen during The Snowmen. Jenna speaks with her native Lancashire accent during Asylum of the Daleks and in the brief scene in the graveyard. In The Snowmen she speaks with a cockney accent for the bulk of the episode, shifting into a posh upper-class voice / Received Pronunciation in her mid-episode scenes as a governess. The little boy at the beginning is supposed to be Doctor Simeon 50 years later. The cross fade from the close-up of the boy’s face into the dour visage of Richard E. Grant was intended to signify the passing of time. So, so much to enjoy overall. Strax makes me laugh no matter how many times I watch this episode. It was a masterstroke from Moffat to bring him, Vastra and Jenny back for this special to ease the audience into a new era post the Ponds. Some familiarity after Amy and Rory’s departure. Enjoy the rest of the season! 😊

A couple of reactions back you were talking in the opening about how you had wanted Oswin to be a companion, and I was cackling (and annoying my cat) with my knowledge of what was to come. I think you missed the "50 years later" on the screen when it transitioned from the boy talking to the snowman to Richard E Grant. I like this episode, but not as a Christmas episode; it's not one I revisit as a one off, but I do enjoy it when it comes up in a watch of the season. As I understand it, "Victorian Values" were expansionist, colonialist, and exploitative. It was the dawn of industrialization and the hunger for profit by the upper class ground through members of the underclass in ways we who have always lived in the era of labor protections and things like weekends can struggle to understand, but the dozen or so men who labored hard all day on promise of a meal only to be devoured is a pretty good example in microcosm. I like this version of the opening as well; I like it any time they get a picture of The Doctor in there, because that's how they used to do it in the old days.

Alix

man i love this episode so much, i ADORE clara, she's one of my favorite characters in all of doctor who. great reaction, i'm so excited for you to watch this next era of episodes

Carl Wilson

Not my favourite Xmas episode either, plot-wise, but that side of the story does have RIchard E. Grant and the voice of Ian McKellan. But who cares because we have sad bitter doctor living on a cloud and then saucy Clara to bring him back to Earth and to his real self, and some of the greatest supporting characters around to help them out. I forgot there was that flash to future Clara towards the end, too, so even her death here is only so sad. As for Doctors getting kissed: I get why it's a bit too much. But it's kinda part of the formula that distinguished New Who from classic Who. Russell T Davies conceived it as more grownup, a little sexier, the companions playing a more central role, and higher stakes to their relationships. And I like that about it! But yeah, by this point, enough with companions and their crushes. And as you said, he's married. Though how anyone attracted to women is supposed to meet Clara and *not fall in love is a bit beyond me. There's a running joke in this episode where we get the sense that the pub owner, the Captain, and probably the boy Digby are all smitten with her, and it's not like Vastra and Jenny don't at least check her out.

Chris B.

Jenna Coleman is so endearing here in Doctor Who that it’s near-impossible not to smile when she’s on screen. I can’t believe she’s not a bigger Star! Richard E. grand is also excellent as Simeon here, which actually bums me out a little bit because I think he would also be a fantastic fit for playing The Doctor at some point.

Nicholas Sulikowski

Fun fact, Richard E. Grant has had two major connections to Doctor Who prior to this episode. The first was in Doctor Who and the Curse of Fatal Death, a parody special done for charity, which was written by Steven Moffat and debuted in 1999. This was a period in which the show was still cancelled. Said parody has Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean) as this alt reality's Ninth Doctor. And there's this gag in which he keeps getting injured every few minutes and has to regenerate. Which leads to Richard E. Grant playing this alt reality's Tenth Doctor. Then in 2003, for the show's 40th anniversary, a Flash animated miniseries called Scream of the Shalka was created, with Richard E. Grant as the Doctor. And if Russell T. Davis didn't successfully bring the show back with Christopher Eccleston, then Grant would still be the Ninth Doctor. After the show came back proper, Grant's Doctor became known as the Shalka Doctor. A piece of a timeline that didn't quite happen.

It's fun how we all got different types of surprises with season 7. Those of us who watched it when it first aired had all seen the announcements that Jenna was playing the next companion, so it was a huge surprise to see her in episode 1 and then killed off! It was less surprising to see her here in the Christmas special, but it was still very surprising when they killed her off again, lol. You and other blind reactors, though, get to be surprised at her reappearance instead! I'm glad she made such a strong impression on you back in episode 1, you might have found this a bit less intriguing if she hadn't.

Merkavar

Didn't know Doctor Who: P.S. was a thing. I it on youtube for anyone interested

Peter Powis

when souflee girl says "run you clever boy" she breaks the fourth wall and then says "and remember!" i think she is telling us the audience to remember her, as she will be back!

Ben “Bentendo” Dawson

Speaking of "technology in the past", one of the many amazing lockdown videos made my past and present cast of Doctor Who [all available on the Doctor Who Lockdown channel] had Arthur reprise the role of Rory as if he was using his smart phone in the past to record a diary for their now adopted child for when they've grown up. So they do have that much at least! :P

Gallows Girl Amy

I'm not sure if you clocked the fact or if anyone else has mentioned it, but you have seen Jenna before. As Johanna Constantine in the Sandman. Although I suppose technically that was seeing her afterwards because of timey-wimey stuff.
