Love it! Keep up the awesome work! Can't wait for the next ones!

The Ice Warriors last appeared in 1974. It was quite a surprise to find them turning up again. It is really hard to believe that this episode aired thirteen years ago!! What?? It seems five minutes! how'd that happen?

Robert A.

Both the HADS and the Ice Warriors date back to the Classic series. I'm trying to remember when the HADS was introduced; the Ice Warriors were in at least a couple Classic stories...

Remember way back in the Christmas Invasion, when the scientist who designed the space probe saw the pictures of the Sycorax on a screen and asked if they were Martians, and a UNIT officer said, "Of course not. Martians look completely different." ;-)

The Lore Merchant

The Professor is David Warner, who has been in a *lot* of stuff.

Josef Schiltz

Remembering that the HADS was introduced in The Krotons serial. I think the appearances of the Ice Warriors numbered four serials. two with Troughton and Two with Pertwee, the last being 1974.

Angela. There is a newsagents in the UK called John Menzies. Tobias' name is pronounced the same and you got it right. However, in Scotland, the name is usually Meng-iss. While "Ming-iss" is considered the authentic Scottish pronunciation (famously used for former politician Sir Menzies Campbell), "Men-zees" is very common, particularly outside Scotland or in modern settings.

This episode aired April 13, 2013. Classic Who fans loved seeing the Ice Warriors return. Nicholas Briggs does a lot of voice work for Doctor Who.

Cody Thomas Sinclair

I always start to forget that this is still the same season that had Amy and Rory, it just feels like a totally new season!

Outcast Spartan

"Black Jack Randall" mentioned, I didn't know Angela had seen Outlander... Was that before she started youtube? Dammit those would have been nice reactions.

Jeff Ratcliff

He's great at playing villains. Unfortunately he died in 2022.

Jake Beaumont

In regards to why the TARDIS sometimes doesn't translate, it tends not to when the language is extremely basic (just noises, clicks and grunts, like the barking alien, or the gurgling Hath. Presumably because sometimes it might be quite strange for the viewer to see normal speech coming from an alien like that, or that kind of speech doesn't work for English. Like if you translate a dog barking... It won't be full sentences it will just be basic concepts. It's also good because it means we still get to hear very alien like noises and the doctor usually can understand anyway The ability also sticks around somewhat so even though the TARDIS left they can still understand Russian.

Being a self-avowed "Marsophile", as well as someone who grew up on Classic Who, I cheered at this episode. I had always wondered why they didn't bring the Ice Warriors back on that earlier David episode (gah, I forget the name right now), though what they DID do was righteously creepy! But the sheer star power in this particular episode was Outstanding!

linos majors

It was Waters of Mars, I believe. The ice warriors were the ones who originally contained the infectious water plague seen in the episode.

James Fleischman

I love a lot of 80s bands like Duran Duran and Depeche Mode but Ultravox, despite my brother being a big fan, always went over my head. I like Hungry Like The Wolf but definitely my favourite Duran Duran song is Come Undone. Their whole Wedding Album is absolute gold.

David Vandervliet

An interesting thing about this episode is that 3 actors in it all starred in different retellings of the TItanic. David Warner was Billy Zane's strongarm in the Cameron movie. Liam Cunningham play Jim Larkin, a union organizer in Titanic:Blood & Steel, and Jenna Coleman played a maid, Annie, in the 2012 TItanic miniseries made by ITV in 2012 (right before she joined the cast of Doctor Who. David Warner also had for the last few years been playing the Doctor (an alternate universe version of the 3rd Doctor) as part of a series of stories called Doctor Who Unbound for audio drama company Big Finish.

David Vandervliet

he played the Doctor for years for Big Finish Audio dramas, an alternative universe version of the 3rd Doctor.

Michael Jones

The Ice Warriors did get a couple of mentions in The Waters of Mars.

Craig

The Ice Warriors are great because a lot of Doctor Who Aliens are either default evil (Daleks, Cybermen) or just humans with a different skin. Ice Warriors have different impulses and goals. The Doctor generally feels a tinge of humility around them because they embody all the best aspects of a warrior race but also all the dangerous and unpredictable parts

Dave Frear

My favourite behind-the-scenes story from this episode is that they planned to use a puppet for the out-of-suit Skaldak (and indeed the hands are in some shots). Unfortunately, they had a bit of a Spinal Tap moment with the measurements so the final puppet was a laughably unusable size and they had to use CGI instead.

Jeremy B

And the Cybermen too.

I love this episode, tense claustrophobic and a great way to reintroduce a very old, classic Who enemy. Possibly my favourite of all the episodes Mark Gatiss has written for the show. He's so, so good at period detail in stories like this. Base-under-siege episodes work so well in Doctor Who. I remember one writer (can't recall which one) talking about the biggest challenge of writing for the show. First, you have to get the Doctor and companion into the action quickly and then separate them from the TARDIS just as fast so they can't transport everyone to safety and nullify the threat. Clara's continuing to really grow into her role as companion, showing great empathy but also stepping forward and showing initiative. And then seeking affirmation from the Doctor that she's done the right thing. I love her laugh when the Professor asks about the future. She's worried he's going to ask her about some major world event like the outcome of the Cold War which the Doctor wouldn't allow her to answer (changing history and all that), but all he wants to know is whether Ultravox stay together! Ultravox were a big deal in the eighties. 'Vienna', the song the Professor was singing near the beginning of the episode was their biggest hit. Lead singer Midge Ure helped organise Live Aid alongside Bob Geldof.

Golladan

The Expanse mentioned!

Robert Collard

Still THE best person to play Ra’s Al Ghul from the Batman universe

Nicholas Sulikowski

Personally I know David Warner best as Ed Dillinger, Sark, and the MCP in Tron, and The Lobe on Freakazoid. Fantastic actor. Great range, honestly. He was also in The Omen (1976), Time Bandits as the primary villain Evil, and James Cameron's Titanic as Mr. Lovejoy.

Leo Cap

Clara: "i'd take a polar bear over an Ice Warrior any day. Cuddlier." Me: 😬😬😬😬😬 Polar bears are pretty much the worst thing you can run into in the arctic. i'll take the Ice Warrior, at least i'm not his obligate food source

Darren Withers

There was a Duran Duran cover album released here in Australia you might like, James. “Come Undone” is my favourite Duran Duran song too, and the Bachelor Girl did a great cover of it. “Ordinary World” by Something for Kate and “A View to a Kill” by Custard were notable, too.

Darren Withers

Angela, I’m surprised you don’t know who Ultravox was. I’m not being critical, it’s just you nearly always recognise pop culture references other reactors miss. For the record, Ultravox was a British Synth-Pop band from the late 70’s and early 80’s, most famous for their song “Vienna” which we heard the professor singing when he interrupted the drill in the intro.

Jake Beaumont

Ah... The episode with two prince Philips (Matt Smith & Tobias Menzies) and a prince Charles (Josh O'Connor, the guy who thaws out the ice warrior)... And Queen Victoria too.

Lucky Lavender

Speaking of how you said that Jenna was gorgeous, she actually dated Richard Madden from GoT and Prince Harry, right before she met Meghan Markle! Jenna Coleman is basically British royalty.

William Huebler

If you do a classic who tour I would reccomend the 2nd doctor episode - The Seeds of Death. Most reactors do one from each doctor, i would reccomend two otherwise it tends to end up a bunch of a particular style of episode, except maybe from the 1st doctor and the 6th? But just me.
