The Ice Warrior is a Doctor Who classic, and one of the most interesting kind of alien's I'd say.

Paulo

I like your theory about Clara.

Ash Davis

Hi Josh O’Connor! Bye Josh O’Connor!

Gallows Girl Amy

It is one of my favorites partly because of the excellent cast, but mainly because the Ice Warriors are an iconic foe for my two favorite classic era Doctors. Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee in case you were wondering. Toby Menzies' characters are always interesting and usually flawed. I first saw him in Rome. David Warner is also a legend. You could sit in front of the telly for a year and barely scratch the surface of his output. Everything from The Omen to the Time Bandits to Babylon 5.

Nathaniel Holgate

If you want to watch something where Tobias Menzies is actually a decent character, I recommend the Crown. He comes in during seasons 3 and 4.

James Fleischman

RIP David Warner - I'll always remember him for his guest role in Babylon 5

Luka Poser

I love the color grading and directing in this one - for what is basically just a remake of S1's Dalek, it's so atmospheric and gorgeous to look at. David Warner was at this point also known for playing an alternate universe Doctor on audio dramas, and the man who thawed out the ice warrior was Josh O'Connor. A stacked cast!

Cei Stockport

it play's into what actually WAS happening in 1983. The massive NATO exercise Operation Able Archer being carried out in West Germany had half the paranoid Soviet leadership convinced it was cover for an attack. That was what the Captain (fortunately correctly) called 'sabre rattling' at the start of the episode.

Luka Poser

This is an interesting episode for Clara especially. In previous episodes she enjoyed having the Doctor try to impress her, but here she seems overly eager to please and act nonchalant. I think after she found out she's "competing with a ghost", she maybe feels like she has to prove herself? P.S. Any plans on watching/reacting to 'An Adventure in Space and Time'? It's quite an entertaining and sweet movie about the creation of Doctor Who, and came out around the time of this season's airing to celebrate the show's 50th anniversary. Although I don't know if you can access it outside the UK :/

I graduated high school in '84, and this Cold War, Hunt for Red October setting always feels pretty unsettling to me. Most of my young life, one of the big truths was that we're one idiot pushing a button away from total destruction. I'm so glad that's not true anymore! Oh, wait....

Sending love the ice warriors look pretty much the same as they did in the classic series

April 2013 this first aired so you were bang on! Ultravox are indeed a band, their big hit was 'Vienna' - the song the man was singing at the beginning of the episode. Lots of people do get their break on Neighbours! (eg Margot Robbie) So that's on the money too lol I really like this one, good use of hiding the ice warrior's true form for as long as possible and just giving you those freaky fingers, and just a good watch, classic claustrophobic style type of episode. Also shows how good Matt and Jenna are that they get on so well already and this is only their fifth episode together!

David Warner is one of my favourite "Hey, it's that guy!"s It's a good episode; not a great one, but certainly a fun one. The claustrophobic feel of being trapped in the sub is used very effectively. And I like that it doesn't draw attention to the fact that the Ice Warriors are a classic villain, it's just a cool bit of continuity for those familiar with the classic series. Neighbors is Australian, but there are a number of famous people who got their start there (Kylie Minogue is the first that springs to mind.) For British actors you might be thinking of Eastenders, or Coronation Street.

I love this episode, tense claustrophobic and a great way to reintroduce a very old, classic Who enemy. Possibly my favourite of all the episodes Mark Gatiss has written for the show. He's so, so good at period detail in stories like this. Base-under-siege episodes work so well in Doctor Who. I remember one writer (can't recall which one) talking about the biggest challenge of writing for the show. First, you have to get the Doctor and companion into the action quickly and then separate them from the TARDIS just as fast so they can't transport everyone to safety and nullify the threat. Clara's continuing to really grow into her role as companion, showing great empathy but also stepping forward and showing initiative. And then seeking affirmation from the Doctor that she's done the right thing. I love her laugh when the Professor asks about the future. She's worried he's going to ask her about some major world event like the outcome of the Cold War which the Doctor wouldn't allow her to answer (changing history and all that), but all he wants to know is whether Ultravox stay together! Ultravox were a big deal in the eighties. 'Vienna', the song the Professor was singing near the beginning of the episode was their biggest hit. Lead singer Midge Ure helped organise Live Aid alongside Bob Geldof. Continuing the Cold War theme, Ultravox also had a big hit with 'Dancing With Tears In My Eyes' about a couple dancing as the world ends.

Mark Gatiss is so, so good at period detail like that.

Loved the reaction! Menzies is indeed pronounced "Menzees" in England but in Scotland it's pronounced "Mingis"!

Watch the earlier version to avoid spoilers. They edited the ending for the 60th anniversary or something like that

I’m going to rewatch all the Clara episodes with you, since she is my favorite companion, but it is interesting to rewatch some of the episodes I tend to skip when revisiting my favorites. This was definitely a British-Actor-All-Star episode. FWIW, this aired in April, 2013. That was right smack dab in the middle of Game of Thrones 3rd season, so Liam Cunningham in particular was very much in the middle of his most recognizable role. Tobias Menzies basically made his GoT debut the week before this episode of Doctor Who aired. This is a good episode…but there’s a reason it isn’t in my main rewatchable set. It is kind of a bottle episode, with no real long-term plot points given nor any truly heart-wrenching character moments. It is a different side of Clara, FWIW, I swear she barely even looks like herself, but most of them don’t while drenched in water the entire episode.

Carl Wilson

I think Clara's attitude in this episode makes sense. She was a little wary of the Doctor in her initial encounters but I think after the emotional experience of the previous episode she's decided that she believes completely in the Doctor's mission of saving people (and/or the world). So now she is feeling out her place in that and trying to be worthy of it.

Peter Powis

I'm from UK. Lots of actors in this! Including James Norton and Josh O'Connor too!!

Randy

Remember in the "Forest of the Dead" when River commented that the Doctor's sonic would eventually have the "red setting"? This is the episode where we see it -- when the Doctor is threatening to blow the nukes before Skaldak can launch them.
