EVERYONE BE QUIET MY SHOW IS ON!!

Tom Levins

Leaving this after listening to your opening (before I go into the reaction itself) - and I just want to say, EVERY true Whovian cries, or at the very least, gets emotional, when it's time for the Doctor to regenerate. You absolutely are not alone there!

Jeremy B

Gallifrey gave him a whole new regeneration cycle of 12 regenerations, so 13 faces in total.

Marc Alg

Original regeneration cycle was 13 matt was 11 but you add war doctor and metacrisis doctor, so that means Matt was the last regeneration.. so the time lords gave him another cycle, another 13 regenerations.

Craig

Handles was the Doctor's longest-serving companion. RIP

Leo Cap

fun fact: Karen and Matt were both bald in their last scene

David Mason

He said this was the beginning of a whole new regeneration cycle. At minimum, that means 12 more doctors after this one, I think.

David Vandervliet

Matt Smith was bald when they filmed this story, he had shaved his head to film a movie, Lost River. His hair had not grown back yet, so they wrote in the whole wig bit to explain it away

gregory oxford

Im so excited for you to experience Peter Capaldi. He gives the best monologs that will give you goosebumps.

George

They’re attack eyebrows

Liem

Goodbye Raggedy Man. Hello attack eyebrows.

Vinny Johnston

It's funny that you mentioned Wilson as I just paused Castaway to watch this episode from you today.

Robert A.

I forget what role Matt shaved his head for, but Karen was filming her role as Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy before this so as others have said they were both bewigged at the end of this one. There is a YouTube short out there of Karen at Comic Con being asked about how Nebula is bald, and she removed her wig in public for the first time and the audience loved it.

Josef Schiltz

Ah, but Angela, The Doctor promised Clara that he would never send her away again - after this time! Like other Christmas specials, this one is based on an older Christmas story, in this case it's John Masefield's 'Box of Delights' In the BBC production of Box of Delights, Patrick Troughton - the Second Doctor - played the lead of the Punch and Judy man, Cole Hawlings. Cole had a dog he called 'Barney Dog'. Peter, in the meantime, was a fan of Classic Who and a member of fan clubs.

Cody Eckert

This is definitely my favorite regeneration speech/scene of modern Who. Its just so good. Also, the Time Lords didn't just grant him a single regeneration, they gave him a whole new regeneration cycle.

Cody Eckert

Actually, its never directly stated how many new regenerations the Time Lords gave him. He may be able to regenerate indefinitely.

Reyo Abyssblood

The doctor said he wouldn't send her away again but remember rule one the doctor lies

Darth Muppet

I know you are probably NOT ready to hear this, but Peter Capaldi is my favorite Doctor.

Fred Aczon

"Crotchety Psycho Old Man" lol accurate. Capaldi's my favorite.

Jeremy B

Dorium predicted it all correctly including the truth field: “On the fields of Trenzalore, at the fall of the Eleventh, when no living creature can speak falsely or fail to answer, a Question will be asked. A question that must never, ever be answered." “The Kovarian Chapter” is Madame Kovarian who broke away from Tasha Lem’s leadership and took some of the Silence and the soldiers back in time with her to the events of Season 5 to stop the Doctor ever reaching Trenzalore in the first place. Which explains her comments about “this endless bitter war” in “A Good Man Goes To War” in Season 6. It’s thought that if Matt had stayed for one more season, the events of this episode would have played out across that year rather than being resolved in a single Christmas special.

Josef Schiltz

Well, it was a lie of omission. He took advantage of the way Clara framed her demand that he wouldn't send her away again and in the ambiguity of the word "again" and responded with like in that he wouldn't send her away again - but thought "after this time!" Sneaky!

Chris Padwick

He was in a stage production of American Psycho, I believe

Jeff Ratcliff

I love how 11's entire run was wrapped up and the end was foreshadowed in "The Eleventh Hour".

David Traynier

My guess is that you'll struggle a bit with Capaldi's first season because sometimes his abrasiveness was overdone. But, it really is worth persevering if you do because his performance absolutely blossoms his later seasons. To me, he is the definitive modern Doctor, on the same level as the GOAT, Tom Baker. And Capaldi will break your heart, I promise you. Also, I would. Enjoy your watching a curated list of some of classic Who. Any classic era fan could give you a list, but I would suggest you try some 4th Doctor and Sarah Jane stories like Genesis of the Daleks, Pyramids of Mars or Ark in Space.

Chris Padwick

Angela, let me sing the praises of Peter Capaldi. First, he's fine artist- he graduated from the Glasgow School of Art (you need a fair bit of talent to get in), was in a punk band with Craig Ferguson and he's an Oscar winner for 1995's Best Short called 'Franz Kafka's Its A Wonderful Life'. On an adorable note, he actually made a short film for a little autistic boy who had sadly lost his grandma and wrote to him as the Doctor for an explanation. Peter sent him a short video as 12 to help him. The lad's mum was so grateful and happy about this that she felt the world should know what a thoughtful , generous, kindly man he is. But also check him out in 'The Thick of It' where he plays a political fixer called Malcolm Tucker - it's the show that 'Veep' is based on. Of course you miss Matt Smith but Peter Capaldi is a real treat.

Jedi Beavis

His eyebrows are very cross.

Lazzy

Yeah. Even after I got over my "this Doctor sucks" phase, I still don't like him very much in season 8. Boy does he rock in the next two seasons though. The writers just made him way too abrasive in season 8.

Michael Thomas

I have cried with every regeneration, you’re one of us! And Capaldi is my favorite doctor, I’m sure you’ll love him too. Def an adjustment after Matt, but I believe you will end up loving him too

Adinium

How did you know this was Matt’s last story before you watched it? Did someone spoil it for you?

Easton Hanson

I think she just assumed because this was the end of his third season. And they usually end after three seasons like 10.

Simply.Beyond

I can’t watch this right now. Checking out of a hotel for flight in a bit and I just put makeup on for once. But I can still tell you, that I know I will be sobbing with you. Matt/12 is my Doctor and I break down every time I watch this episode, it hurts to say goodbye to him. I’ll be honest and say that the show never quite hit me as much after this. But, I did grow to like and appreciate Capaldi after a while, and I definitely preferred Clara with him, than with Matt.

Kalinda

At the time of filming Karen had shaved her head for the first Guardians of the Galaxy. Matt had shaved it for another project he was working on. So in that last scene they are both wearing wigs.

James Hoffmann

Matt Smith's regeneration hits the hardest for me. His speech about not forgetting all the people you used to be, just really speaks to me. I love how it describes our lives. We don't regenerate in a scifi way, but we do change through our lives. When we move from childhood to adulthood, we become different people but still the same, kind of like regeneration. His words are a great reminder that we need to embrace the change in our lives while still remembering our past and the person it has made us. So beautiful. And then of course, the Doctor hallucinates Amy Pond just to really play on our emotions. Capaldi is different from the past Doctors but that is one the cool things about the show, how each actor can be their own unique version of the same character. Capaldi does add gravitas to the role. He also has some fantastic and iconic speeches. And there are definitely some really amazing episodes coming up. I really look forward to your reactions to the Capaldi episodes.

matt

"I will always remember when The Doctor was me"

Frank J

The doctor actually spent approximately 900 years on Trenzalore.

Josef Schiltz

Thing is, the Capaldi had to be close, just because of the eyebrows cameo in the 50th. I suppose it had to be a valid supposition.

Josef Schiltz

Capaldi - with a great big "THE" ! Engaging hard drive! Enter The Capaldi. Who found out that he had the role whilst filming in Prague. His agent rang him and said "Hello Doctor!" Whilst in Moravia, a little boy—a Whovian—recognized him from Fires Of Pompeii and Peter said "You should have a photo taken with me!" Peter encouraged the boy to "go and get your camera" because he knew he would soon be revealed to the world as the new Doctor.

Brenda

Think there might be some confusion regarding the impossible girl stuff. That was already resolved in Name of the Doctor. Those other versions came from this one going in the time stream. 11 got her out alive so this is just regular Clara. The impossible girl ark is over now.

MaxValPlatt

The Doctor - Bold and bald ;)

MaxValPlatt

Yeah, I'd say that 8th season Doctor's character arc was kinda rough, with him being quite different from 10th and 11th alike (more like 9th, though).

MaxValPlatt

Bet that it was Doctor's subconscious reaction to Clara's remark about his eyebrows - you think that they were too small, now meet two angry bushes )

Space Monkey Mafia

Capaldi, you are gonna love. He has the best monologs.

Ryan Denoven

Capaldi was my favourite ever doctor, I hope you enjoy him!

Meredith Woods

This regeneration always makes me cry the hardest, but I’m super excited for your upcoming reactions because Capaldi is my favorite doctor and him and Clara are my favorite doctor and companion duo!!

Xolotl (ENVTuber)

Matt Smith was honestly my first introduction to Doctor Who, and around the time of Clara's introduction is when I started watching the show weekly as it came out. Going through this final episode, or "special" was definitely one emotional rollercoaster. Everyone's time to regeneration has its own feeling. From 9 to 10, Christopher was trying to prepare Rose for the change, and while that doctor was still in a dark place given how fresh the death of Gallifrey was, it took Rose to realize just how "fantastic" he truly was Tennant's doctor didn't want to change and it was a very sorrowful goodbye to all the companions he had. Smiths goodbye was more bittersweet. It was him trying to comfort Clara just as he did Rose, but he was a lot more content in changing this time, knowing he had a good run, and knowing number 13 (Twelve for us) was going to be quite something I can't wait to see how you react to Capaldi's take on the Doctor, I honestly REALLY love how he does it. The only thing I'll say is to pay attention to a lot of the nuances Capaldi has, and the it might feel a little different during this run, but it's absolutely worth the ride! Take care and see you in two weeks for more Who!

Doug C

Yep, a big advantage of watching these live is that I was done with the show. Skipped a whole year. Then only after I healed, did I binge 13’s first season before their second. It’s a painful moment but when you rewatch you’ll get the beauty of several of the moments in that farewell. (And as I’m writing you’re asking about what happens for next regeneration. Just in case everyone didn’t already explain, the Gallifrayans gave him a whole new set of 12 regenerations. That’s why the big boom.)

Matt Migs

Fantastic.... 10/10

kris

so both matt and karen are bald in that scene. matt from filming lost river and karen from guardians of the galaxy

SuperJohnPatterson

So timelords can give multiple regenerations such as the many regenerations classic who has given the master or stole regenerations.

James Miller

Everyone says this regeneration was fast, but it wasn't - it started in the tower.

Luke Collier

Never change your emotions are so raw and powerful it brings me back to when i first watched these eps

BMackVO

I knew this was going to tear you up this time, and his farewell speech was so poignant. Imagine how it was for those of us who watched this whole series over the years, and had to wait in between episodes. That's what makes you so fantastic though, you've managed to fall in love with these characters in such a short time. That's something that's so unique to you.

Dannielle

Ahh he’s here, my Doctor!! Capaldi is far and away my favourite Doctor, very excited for this part of your journey. Also love Matt’s regeneration speech, one of my favourites.

Dingus Ex Machina

I am extremely excited to see how you feel throughout 12's run. It's gonna be a whopper!

Richard King

I suspect like me you will not find the transition to the 12th Doctor and will struggle to like him as much initially. However, Capaldi is an amazing actor and over time he came to be the quintessential Doctor for me.

Michael

Raggedy Man.... Goodnight 😭

Josef Schiltz

The Capaldi has attack eyebrows! He is also a very talented artist, musician and caricaturist. He is on video doing cartoons of the actors who played the Doctor. They're brilliant.

Michael

'It's not even a friendly face this time.. he looks like a crotchety, psycho old man.. I'm sure I'm gunna love him.... some day' 🤣 All said through hysterical sobbing was honestly hilarious

Michael

So on the future Eleven said 'a whole new regeneration cycle' so the timelords didn't just give him one they reset the limit so he has another full set of 12 regenerations

Michael

What's also crazy is the Eleventh Doctor is by far the longest he's ever spent in an incarnation. He regenerated into his body at 907 and was over 2000 by the end of this episode. For context because of how RTD told linear storylines the Tenth Doctor was only 4 years old when he regenerated!

Darth Muppet

I think I know which monologue you are mainly referring to. I still get goosebumps just thinking about it.

Darth Muppet

I think my familiarity with his portrayal of Malcolm Tucker smoothed that over for me. I loved Capaldi’s Doctor from the get go, but yeah, it’s a really drastic change for a lot of people. 😅

James Fleischman

We all change, when you think about it, we're all different people; all through our lives, and that's okay, that's good, you've gotta keep moving, so long as you remember all the people that you used to be. I will not forget one line of this, not one day, I swear. I will always remember when The Doctor was me.

Guywithpants

Matt was my first Doctor, this regeneration is always the most heartbreaking for me. The crack, the second betrayal of Clara, Amy, and finally Wake Up playing in the background of his farewell. It always brings a tear to my eye. I'm almost sorry to say it, but now it's time for my favorite Doctor

Josh Lammaslehto

When I was young, 5 was my Doctor. When I got older, it was 12. Love them all, of course.

Mattius

I am so, so excited to get into Capaldi. It's always bittersweet... For sure. Thanks for the rewatch so far, it's been great!

Isaiah

11 is MY Doctor and this episode broke my heart but it was the right time. S7’s thing of big “movie” stories got tired in the moment and the 50th felt like a good end. Matt is incredible in this and his time as Doctor convinced me he would be a skilled and successful actor. That arguably more people know him as Daemon Targaryen than the Doctor is a great testament to his talent.

William Huebler

Pain aside, this is one of my favorite regenerations. It embraces the change and tells us all we all go through it too in a metaphorical way.

William Huebler

And I love Matt's Doctor, but Peter's up there as probably my favorite new who doctors with Matt.

Brian Syrett

More specifically, he didn't send her away again - he left her. So, he didn't lie to her at all in that moment, just a harsh obfuscation of truth.

Spakksen

I love his farewell speech. So well writtten and delivered.

miriam kupfer

I just have to say...I STRUGGLED the first few episodes of Capaldi. I initially hated it...missed Matt...and thought I would never love the show again. But Capaldi is BRILLIANT. Absolutely bloody brilliant. His doctor is so different, but as he settles in...my god, you are in for the ride of your life. Just pure brilliance. You will love him with all your heart and soul. I promise.

Silver.Marcus

A psycho old man who will for sure be one of your faves

Cullenprime .

That sounded like it was something Matt Smith would say but it was written in the script for him to say it. It felt like it was really coming from his heart though.

Cullenprime .

The facial transition was too quick for me.

Chris Carroll

It was sad to see Matt go but Peter did an amazing thing, he became MY doctor in a few short episodes after decades of mad love for Paul McGann (his run in the big finish audio collection is some of the best science fiction around)

Movie_Mike

Matt was my favourite doctor. He played the old man trapped in a young man's body perfectly. Peter's run is just so different. I only began to warm up to him in the last half of his final season & then he was gone.

L K Piper

Ive been waiting for this for so long

L K Piper

The ending makes me weep every time. And you will love Peter, trust me. Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant Matthew Smith, Peter Capaldi are all my favourite doctors for different reasons. Christopher was my first: Hes Sarcastic, witty, you can tell he's been through some stuff David is cool, suave, stylish, dramatic but almost has a slightly cruel side Matt is goofy, more comically but has some but definitely has an intense darkness to him As for Peter. Well you'll see.

Robert Gorman

Peter gonna break your heard so many times. lol

Tori

I love your reactions to this show. "I will always remember when the Doctor was me." still hits me just as much as "I don't want to go". Despite the goofy deus ex machina stuff that tends to close out so many of the storylines. To me the Doctor represents hope, he's the counter to ignorance and fear and hopelessness, and I think that's always been the important takeaway for me. The bad guys never know what to do with him because he's willing to stand up and say no and that's all it takes sometimes.
