Not the thumbnail I expected, buuut I like it 😂

Michell Gomez's family were big fans of the show and was originally cast as Madame Karabraxos in Time Heist but couldnt take the role due to scheduling. She said she was so disappointed that she wrote Steven Moffat a letter and said if he ever had a role for a blue eyed, high cheek boned villain, to please call her. He then wrote her into the series. She couldnt tell her husband or anyone else who she was going to play..,. even though she was walking around with a smile on her face for a year!

OverWims

So glad she wasn't able to do it...we wouldn't have gotten her as Missy if she was Madame Karabraxos

Matthew Hunter

PLEASE go back and watch the titles again, it wasn't just the order of the names 🙂

TGrimace

She didn't just say to please call her. According to the story, she said "I'm your man". That apparently gave Moffat the idea to bring back The Master as a woman. Heh. A beautiful story that I hope is true

Just love this episode and I’m so pleased you’ve ended the season liking twelve. Missy is my favourite iteration of the Master, Michelle Gomez is so great in the role. I can’t wait for next week I love Peters first Christmas episode.

You would definitely love Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart in Classic Who. He's such a great character!

Imagine if your best friend went to the trouble of inventing an afterlife just to get you back. That's true friendship right there. She just wanted to have her friend back (even if that meant, like, killing lots of people and further threatening him with the murder of billions into it - let's not quibble). 'I need my friend back' is such a line, and delivered so beautifully. I love, love, LOVE that the motivation for the Big Villain of the season was just to get her friend back. Nice turn-around that Clara and the Doctor lie to each other at the end - but not for selfish reasons. This time, they lie to each other to show that they're both happy and thus that now the other one can go off and be happy themselves. It's miscommunicated acts of love for each other this time. Capaldi's speech realising who he is? OMG. Ironically, I guess that it took the Master showing him the opposite so that he could come back to himself. (And there's actually a strange little moment there, where the Master almost looks...glad? Proud?) In short: A LOT OF HEART HERE, even for the Master.

Sorcerer Rumburak

Gosh - Petronella Osgood. The question is: Which one died? The Human or the Zygon? 🤔

DSJ.

Also tbf, Capaldi is unambiguously the hottest Doctor.

The Doctor's longest best, best friend. Much of the Doctor's attitude about the military & humans' "shoot first" reaction came from the early UNIT era. The Brig & The Doctor butting heads while maintaining their relationship were some of the best moments in Classic.

Cei Stockport

"Give a good man an army and he'll never run out of people to kill." Hard line because it's probably true.

Ben

When you think about the Doctor and Clara both lying to each other at the end just remember what the Doctor said at the end of Mummy on the Orient Express - "Sometimes the only choices you have are bad ones, but you still have to choose". The other thing with lying is not objectively bad, people lie for all sorts of reasons, mostly bad, but not always. Sometimes you have to lie to protect the people you care about, so try not to automatically assume that when either Clara or the Doctor lies, there's bad intent.

I do rather enjoy this episode a lot, showing off Missy and her crazy side, its just such a joy to watch, especially when she's just having a fun old time. The Christmas episode is gonna be another good one with Nick Frost. I still kinda remember what it was like when I first watched the episode when Nick shows up and it was like "What? No way!" definitely an episode I look forward to seeing again. It really does kill the mood a little when you have two friends who can't not lie to each other about what's happening in their lives, but at the same time they just don't want to admit the pain it brings. The brigadier being mentioned was really nice touch, and for them to be a cyberman that saved his own daughter from falling out the plane. He is a pretty good character in the Classic Who series.

Part of why I love reactions is getting to hear the different interpretations certain moments can have. I have always interpreted them lying to each other at the end as them letting each other go, thinking they have something better waiting for them. The doctor assumes Danny is back so he lies to let Clara leave without feeling guilty for leaving the doctor alone, and then when Clara thinks he’s found Gallifrey she lies for the exact same reason. But I really liked the way you read it as them both almost feeling embarrassed to admit what happened. Adds a layer I hadn’t considered before. Very glad 12 has grown on you, he had a lot of growing himself to do. Learning who he was again, you can imagine after everything 9, 10, and 11 have been through it must be hard to keep sight of who you are and why you do what you do. But in the end it’s simple, the doctor is a mad man travelling in a box helping out where he can, just because it is the right thing to do. Can’t wait for the Christmas special!

All Hail the Holey Jumper! 🙌

Andy Munden

You know Santa is special when he just causally opens the TARDIS door and lets himself in.

Jared Smith

Only in this rewatch, after you mentioned Jenna's name coming first in the credits, did I also notice that they put her eyes in the intro instead of Peters.

Such a good finale episode. The big action sequence where The Doctor falls out of the plane, the closing out of the Danny story, the presence of two of the major villains, references to the classic series, and then it closes out with an emotional hook and a narrative hook for the next episode. Well, maybe 1.5 of the major villains. The Cybermen are there and functionally vital to the plot, but they only act as an extension of Missy. But there was no Cyberplanner, no Cyberleader, none of that. This was not a Cybermen scheme in any real way.

John

Clara and the Doctor lying to one another at the end because they think it will let the other be happy never fails to move me. I hate it took the entire season for the Doctor we knew to come back, but we got there. For me his comment about Clara betraying him not making a difference was the moment I felt he was fully back. I was REALLY upset about Missy killing Osgood. I really liked her. And right after the Doctor asked her, "All of time and space??" He would have brought her along.

John

Thank you for mentioning that. I never caught the other change.

Watch green wing to see a very wacky Michelle Gomez, she is great in everything she does

When you talk about Capaldi's Doctor feeling more refined, one thing that stuck out to me is how he pilots the TARDIS. And I think this was even a personal choice by Capaldi. Which is that he didn't want to be jumping around the console mashing switches while experiencing turbulence, like how we often saw with Tennant and Smith. Instead, he's more like a Classic Series Doctor, totally in control when he flies it.

Carl Wilson

I do love this episode. Missy is spectacular, greatest villain ever, and yes, Twelve is really fully himself now. You see why people were saying to wait and see. What happens with Danny as a cyberman doesn't really make sense to me - every other person loses their principles when they're converted and the inhibitor is on, but he doesn't? Why? But emotionally it works, and especially his final action from beyond. it's really too bad that Clara shares with the Doctor this tendency to lie to people "for their own good." The Doctor sometimes does need to do that, but she's been influenced by all her time (and space) with him to think she can stand apart and make those choices too. Though the Doctor is the one who really causes it in that conversation, because he won't shut up and listen. Thank goodness Santa seems like he's gonna do something about it.

I absolutely love how this episode brings around most of the (non-Kill The Moon) difficult questions and moments to bring the Doctor to his “Idiot with a Box” revelation. But particularly the discussion of soldiers and officers. In the end, Danny proved The Doctor wrong. The Doctor needed him to be a soldier…a soldier who could think for himself. And in the end, The Doctor proved Danny wrong. The Doctor was an officer…but he would be willing to get his hands dirty to protect who he loves. And at the start of it all…a reminder that the Doctor’s longest-running human friend, before Clara, before Kate, before Rose…was a Soldier. And an Officer. And a good man. *chef’s kiss* You think Osgood would start dressing like a Magician? Maybe…a Magician’s Apprentice??? But seriously…I love that this ended more bitter than sweet. I love that it challenged me as a viewer, to appreciate that endings aren’t always happy, that they are just a way to leave things sometimes. And that this story was very much about an ending for Clara that wasn’t alternate dimensions or getting abandoned or dying or getting a memory wipe. It was about a Companion trying to do the most human thing of all…walking away when she was done. Who knows how Santa will feel about that though…. Thank you for this journey. I am absolutely looking forward to Season 9. Without spoiling a thing…you will not have to wait long to absolutely love what it coming. Unless the two weeks until watch it is waiting a long time. IDK…you be the judge of time. :)

Is that some kind of "I have no idea" reflex? That would be true if Angela had completely missed the 11th Doctor. But maybe that applies to you? 🤔

John

I don't recall her first name being revealed just yet, but you do you.

Daniel French

Another great reaction Angela! You're right, you can't help but love Michelle Gomez! She's one of those villain's you love to hate! I know I can't stand them lying to each other! But I hope you've warmed to Peter's doctor now!

ZapWing

Hey, you remember the last time a companion woke up in front of a tombstone in a graveyard? Yeah, I'm not crying either. :(

Fr. Brench

With series 9 around the corner, I'm remembering a fun fact (non-spoiler) about its announcement: it was the first series in all of New Who (and perhaps the only one?) that announced all twelve episode titles all at once before they began airing. I think they wanted us to see which episodes paired together. Not sure, Angela, if you'd want that much foreknowledge for your watch-through though?

Michael Jones

Now that you have finished this whole season, I can share this link (if nobody else has): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-OTYT02W7E This is the version of "Don't Stop Me Now" that was sung by the pop star Foxes in "Mummy on the Orient Express." It's a great cover, and the video has Doctor Who clips throughout.
