So much I want to say, but even being cryptic and meta about stuff could kind of spoil stuff so I am restraining myself. All I will say is this episode is even better on a rewatch than it was the first time around.

Johannes Güth

Alyt is a rank... The equivalent of an Executive Officer (XO) or First Officer.... Shai Alyt: Translates roughly to "Great Commander", "Shipmaster", or "Warlord" (Shai being a Minbari honorific meaning "great", "high", or "master"). A Shai Alyt holds supreme command over a capital warship.... The name of the minbari in this episode is Neroon. Don´t forget him;)

One of Babylon 5 movies has answers to your questions about Earth-Minbari war (I won't say which one). But you aren't supposed to watch it now, it has massive spoilers for these parts of the show that you haven't seen yet (basically, whole story is about secrets behind most conflicts in the show). And there are story pieces that would allow you to build your own version of events during your watch, so, better to wait a little and watch that movie in it's release order :)

Kamp

I really like this episode, and like it even more on rewatches.

Paul Hess

Buckle up and don't leave your seat for the rest of the season!

B5 has an underclass. It was built last and on the cheap (remember the dock workers and the shoddy equipment?) Like they said in the show, people come there looking for an opportunity, it doesn't work out, and they can't afford to go home. B5 also is a military station so not all the people things have a priority. Garibaldi is station security but limited resources and people and the station is huge. At 5 miles long and over 1 mile diameter, the interior volume is massive. Put 250,000 beings in it and it's a good sized city. The fact there are 'slums' called "down below" are almost expected.

James Fleischman

Hmmm Chrysalis... what species have we seen on the station that resembles an insect? And what species has an encounter suit that looks like an exoskeleton?

Brian Goss

In Babylon 5, "Shy Elite" is a phonetic mishearing of the Minbari military rank Shai Alyt. It is the equivalent of saying Supreme General/Leader or Fleet Admiral in more common terms.

MertzRocks

More leaders like Jeff? I wish right now ANY 'leaders' were like Jeff! Ugh.

Matthew Vandiver

An episode written by the legendary D.C Fontana(Star Trek: TOS). Damn, she's a great writer!

2 Parter incoming next week, get ready!

The Babylon Project was a development of the Earth Alliance that began in 2248, shortly after the resolution of the Earth-Minbari War. No timeline on the first 3 stations. The Babylon Station was the first space station built by the Earth Alliance under the aegis of the Babylon Project. During construction, The Babylon Station’s infrastructure collapsed and exploded as a result of sabotage. The second and third attempts, Babylon 2 and 3, were also sabotaged and destroyed during construction. Babylon 4 The biggest of all of the Babylon stations, Babylon 4 was fully mobile and had dual rotating sections that rotated in the opposite direction relative to each other, allowing the station to conduct stable flight in space and not needing to reside in planetary orbit. Constructed in 2254, from the cumulative parts left over from the previous three construction efforts, Babylon 4 disappeared twenty-four hours after it became operational. Babylon 5 was constructed, with substantial assistance from the Centauri and Minbari governments, and the only station to make it to service. It was the smallest of the Babylon Stations, utilizing what parts and components were left over after the initial construction attempts. Going online on March 9, 2256. Ship stats: The Sharlin class warcruiser was in its time the largest and most powerful ship in the Minbari fleet. They were manufactured at the Valeria-On-High Orbital Shipyards orbiting Minbar. The main capital ship of the Minbari fleet, the Sharlin's stealth systems give it an advantage over the scanning and tracking systems that when active it would prevent some of the races from achieving a positive weapons lock. The Sharlin is also equipped with advanced scanners so powerful that when set to maximum have been known to interfere with the electronics aboard less advanced starships, effectively jamming their systems. I want to comment on a few things you brought up. Then I see Dr. River Song and hear her say spoilers so I will shut up now. The "city" I live in has 124,321 (give or take) people in it. I would be very surprised if our mayor knew or was even informed of every person coming into and going out of our city. I know there are systems in place to help people and children even so I would be very surprised if they caught every death and orphan. The station has 250,000 entities in flux 24/7. The amount of big brother that would take is impressive.

Paul Hess

T=59:25 you comment on how you made a mistake because you had a preconceived notion that the religious people wouldn't do something nasty like steal the body, but even in that same discussion, you repeated the same bias because you immediately believed their story of what the Shai y'lite wanted after death. How do any of us know whether the warrior caste or the religious caste was right about what Bremer really wanted? Both sides claimed they were doing exactly what the Shai Y'lite would have wanted so why do we believe one side? Because a religious person said so?

Thomas Schorsch

Chrysalis is not an answer, it's another bloody question.

Wild_Lee_Coyote

One of the greatest things about Babylon 5 is it makes you ask so many questions and will answer them in ways you don’t expect.

Marcus Hicks

...and understanding that question is a three edged sword.

Karl Ward

Methinks he doth protest too much?

Kieran Elliott

I remember when first watching the show I felt Sinclair at first seemed oddly naive and almost star struck by the Minbari considering he had seen what they were willing to do during the war, so I enjoyed seeing darker sides of their culture as things went on.
