Hello, everyone! May the Fifth be with you all!
Wait, that's not quite right, is it? Ah well, let's discuss Overbreed, Love & Degeneracy, and other endeavors!
Right from the top, Overbreed is still in the process of having audio come in. Over the past week, I decided to restructure the project files slightly, to make them a bit more conducive to recording dubs (once we get to that point).
The dubs will be done on a per-project-file basis, since that's the most straightforward way to work on them. The issue was that, especially for the earlier project files of Overbreed Episode 1, they were often split right in the middle of intense action sequences, as a consequence of SFM's limited memory. While they technically work fine, they make the dubbing process rather awkward.
However, since those early project files were made, the DXVK DLL for SFM came out, which frees up about a gig of memory overhead - effectively nearly doubling SFM's available working memory. With that increase in available memory, the technical limitations that required the awkward project splits was no longer necessary.
And so I reorganized things around for a more logical dubbing process, splitting the project files into roughly-4-minute chunks, and relegating the breaks to hard-cuts and transition animations. This should hopefully make the dubbing process not only easier for the voice talent to match, and not only easier for me to work with, but also result in a higher-quality, more natural-sounding final product, once it all comes together.
While I was reorganizing the project files, I also elected to put together a visual chart showing the current state of the audio ingest - which is this post's preview image. It is split into the eighteen individual dub sections for the project, with each section tracking the audio received on a per-character basis. The color-code is simple: green means the audio has been recorded, received, and processed. Blue means that the section is currently out waiting to be recorded. And red means that it has not yet been gotten to.
As you can see, we, uhh... Have a lot of red to get through. But! We've made good progress on the green! Almost all of the narrative audio has been recorded at this point. It's mostly the dubs which are painting the canvas crimson.
With characters being able to record in parallel (except for the Mercy futa/female in Narrative B-4, for obvious reasons), there are 16 blocking recording sections, meaning sections that can't be recorded in parallel. With an estimated 2-week turnaround per blocking section, that's, uhh... Approximately 32 weeks of waiting for audio to come in. That's, uhh, 8 months.
I knew that it was going to take a while for audio to come in. But I didn't realize, until I sat down and formally broke down and visualized everything, just how long it would take.
The nice thing is, because of this segmented recording approach, I'm not completely blocked while waiting for audio. As we saw with the Moira and Mercy audio that's already come in, I can lip-sync the audio segments as they come in. Ideally, by the time the final audio comes in, all of the previous audio will have already been lip-synced.
But yeah. I don't think we'll be seeing a release this year. Especially since there is still a lot of work to do after the audio comes in. It's a massive milestone, but it isn't the final leg of the journey. All of the work between the Love & Degeneracy full-chapter early-access release and the individual episodes should be evidence enough of that.
=====
But hey! That's a perfect segue into talking about Love & Degeneracy, isn't it?!
As you all probably saw, Episode 5 went into early access (and Episode 4 went public) this past Friday. Over the weekend, I managed to get all of the lip-sync for Episode 6 done, and my goal for this week is to have it ready for a final 4k render by end-of-day Monday. I'm internally aiming for end-of-day Friday, but am giving myself the weekend as a buffer.
Episode 6 will mark the end of this first chapter of L&D! Once the Early Access for it goes live, I intend to release a two-question poll in all of the major audience sectors - here on Patreon, over on Bluesky, over on the Nazi Hellhole Cesspit Site, and on my Discord - to get peoples' opinions on two things.
The first question will be how people feel about the regular 2-week releases, and if people are interested in more projects following this episodic structure, or if they would prefer longer projects that take longer to release. The second question is far more important though, and it will be asking everyone what their favorite joke in the chapter is! Every episode has at least one joke, and I love them all, but I am curious which one people like most!
Once Episode 6 goes live, I also intend to release a super-cut of all six episodes, bundled into a single convenient video, and release it as a single video over on the Films page. It will be a very light edit, and it will be extremely obvious that it was originally released as 6 individual episodes, but it will at least make it more convenient to watch the whole chapter all in one go, for those interested in that.
And then finally, with the end of L&D in sight, I have made the executive decision that I am going to take a 2-week break between Episode 6's early-access release, and beginning work on the 4-episode Pharmmetra chapter.
I haven't worked out the full logistics yet, but this is roughly what the schedule will look like. Do not take these dates as final!
May 15 - L&D Episode 6 early-access release. L&D Episode 5 public release.
May 29 - L&D Episode 6 public release.
June 12 - Pharmmetra Episode 1 early-access release. Pharmmetra chapter teaser public release.
June 26 - Pharmmetra Episode 2 early-access release. Pharmmetra Episode 1 public release.
Again, these are just tentative dates. My goal is to spend the time between L&D Episode 6's early-access release and public release (May 15 to May 29 in this tentative schedule) returning my focus to my SFM -> Blender pipeline. I haven't been able to find the time to work on it much over the past few weeks, with all of the other projects I've been juggling.
The idea is, once Love and Degeneracy Chapter 1 is fully done, to let my ADHD off the leash and just let it hyperfixate on the tool. These past few months have been pretty rough for my executive function - while I only put in 2 hours of actual work time per day on the Micro episodes, in reality those turn into 4, 6, sometimes even 8 hours of measured time. Focusing on specific tasks can be hard with a spicy brain that really wants to jump around from project to project. You all have seen the other endeavors from previous Progress Reports - you all know how my brain works.
I don't know if I ever mentioned it previously, but I actually put together a really shitty tool for actually measuring the time I spend in SFM, to help manage the time. It's very barebones, and just measures how long any given window is in focus. But it actually works pretty well.
I don't have any recent real-world screenshots of it, but it isn't uncommon for Discord to have as much time (if not more time) than SFM in any given day. Firefox can get pretty far up there, too.
But, I have managed to make it work. The fact that Love & Degeneracy hasn't missed a deadline yet, and has managed to maintain its strict 2-week cycle with a few days to spare before each release, is a good sign. I definitely don't think I can manage more than 2 hours a day on Micros, on top of all the other work I do on a given day. But I also don't think I need to. The Micro videos were, after all, explicitly built to work around my particular production style.
=====
And then finally, on the subject of other endeavors, most of my focus this past week has been on Nualia. I tried out a few different materials for her shoes, before finally deciding on fishscale. I have to say, I think it came out pretty nice, though I think I want to darken the texture a bit.
I finally managed to get it all into Source as well, though it is very early days. Her outfit needs some more polygons in places - it distorts pretty badly during posing. And she still needs faceposing besides.
Broad strokes though, she's working, and--in my opinion at least--she is looking absolutely fantastic.
I am hoping to finally have that Micros Schedule timeline fully put together by next week. That has been my other major focus. I've gotten all 8 poses figured out, with most of them scenebuilt and lit. I still need to edit them all into proper posters as well, each with the project title and the number of episodes they'll contain.
This is what my schedule for Micros is looking like, with the top row between the plan for 2026, and the bottom row the plan for 2027. I mentioned previously that I was eyeballing 2027 being The Year of the OC, and I'm really locking down hard on that idea.
I'm not 100% on the order of the bottom half, though. I will need to get feedback and see what all people would like to see most, of the four original IPs I've planned for 2027. Going to be a bit difficult to properly judging, considering how of the four, only one has actually had a proper voiced entry (Corsair). One of them has been a dormant IP for 10 years, one of them has only been teased with occasional lore drops, and one of them people know basically know nothing about beyond the main character's long design process.
But I intend to ask regardless. More specifically, I intend to write a quick chapter synopsis for each of them, as well as provide a draft pose screenshot for each of the episodes, to give people a better idea of what to expect.
Of course, that means figuring out everything well in advance... I have most of them figured out already, but this will require me to really sit down and iron everything out. Not a bad thing, all things considered.
At any rate, that's all for this week. Until next week, everyone!
