I'm still hard at work on the next TLS update, but I'm in the middle of the long grind; I don't have a new topic and it's boring to say the same "still working" every week, so here's a post I prepared earlier when I had more time. But after this, playtime is over for me: nothing but increasingly intensive work until the next TLS update is done.

-

I'm going to take the unusual step of recommending a game: Noblesse Oblige, made by a TLS player who you may recognize from the comments here as Lord Forte or CyberForte.

While TLS is in the same category as a great many other games, many of those are are not really aiming for the same goals. Noblesse Oblige is an exception to that, covering politics, investments, and strategic decisions. Many aspects of it could be efficiently described as "TLS plus X" or "TLS except Y". I'll leave you to discover the plot and other general elements from the pages linked above.

The connections are openly acknowledged, both explicitly and implicitly. =P

The game takes advantage of a lot of scripts I didn't know existed when I started TLS, so combat is definitely more tactical. There's significant attention given to establishing the world, including careful use of tiles and characters (though you will see some familiar faces). Right now there is a solid 25+ hours of content, covering what I presume to be a meaningful fraction of what is to be a larger game.

Like TLS, it's a freely-available RPG Maker game. You can download directly, play on Steam, or support on Patreon. There's also a fan wiki, with detail similar to TLS. If you want to check out a similar game at an earlier stage in development, give all that a look!

Excellent game finds other excellent game.

Seen this game around, looks really cool. The only thing that Last Sovereign truly was missing, was an investment to capitalize off the major global broom shortage, so perhaps this is the game to make it happen!

Alistair

I can recommend this game, it really scratches that TLS itch between updates

Lord Forte Games

Thank you very much for the post! A note to anyone reading: As you can see in the news posts at most of the links above, the current game version (released on patreon on friday) has the new art for the protagonist, Alexander. I'm hoping to do other further art upgrades before the next public release as well. That aside... beyond my thanks for the post, I wanted to say thanks to Sierra for making TLS. In addition to being a rare gem in today's sea of mediocre content, it isn't an exaggeration to say that it changed my life. Before I found TLS, I had no real idea that I wanted to develop games, and no appreciation for just how much is possible for one person to do with a modest budget. Playing TLS inspired me to want to see if I could create something similar. So, if I wear my inspirations on my sleeve, there's a good reason for that, haha. I hope that anyone who gives Noblesse Oblige a try will enjoy!

Has a very enticing Steam page thank you for bringing attention to the game I will happily support the Patreon to support a passionate dev/TLS fan <3.

Yesss, I love this game! I wholeheartedly recommend it for any TLS fans. The political conflicts of the story are growing increasingly complex, and they're shockingly legible. I've thrown out proper names regularly in discussions with other players like it's nothing, which is one of the biggest compliments I can give. The factions, main players, setting, etc. are somehow just that easy to remember even as the game gradually unravels its political time bomb of a plot further and further. We're still getting new factions introduced even now and everything has stayed as coherent as they were when the conflict was just starting. The combat is simply beautiful. There are so many deceptively simple mechanics that have a shocking amount of depth. I've replayed every boss fight countless times so I can analyze them sufficiently for their guides in the wiki (yes, like SL says, there's even a wiki!), and I can personally attest to how complex everything gets yet, again, how shockingly legible they remain. No, I still haven't gotten tired of any of them and I've collectively fought them hundreds of times. There are many mechanics Noblesse Oblige openly borrows from TLS, but the combat is one area where I wholeheartedly believe it's surpassed TLS and its other inspirations. TLS is a game that massively rewards you for sticking to it. Noblesse Oblige is very much the same. Stick with it, immerse yourself in it, and you'll be treated to what is in my opinion shaping up to be one of the best RPGs out there.

Oh, I remember this game. ...sigh I wish there were more RPGs being made where 'I' could be the main protag instead of just guiding 'someone else'.... I dunno. The older I've gotten, the more I want to be the main character, so it's hard to care about other heroes journeys.... I guess my tastes and desires with RPGs have become more refined and I'm just not satisfied with 'following X's journey'. I just want it to be 'my' journey'. Sure it's old school, but I definitely give more of a crap this way. Attachment to the characters 'I' make and all that...

sierralee

And thank you for the game! I definitely enjoyed the time I sat down with Noblesse Oblige, and it was nice to feel it hitting the same strategic notes I aim to play in TLS. If I've inspired more of this sort of thing, even a little more, that's quite rewarding. ^-^

It's time for an omnibus report on the reports from the Bugs Thread of the wiki forum! (Yay!) lsc sez: "Started a fresh replay on the new public release, and have found I'm unable to scroll down on quests where the required elements take up more than one page. Selecting the quest does not switch over to the right side as it did in earlier releases." "Brief update on the quest menu problem. It seems to be tied to the keybinding. Selecting the individual quest with "Z," or the enter key--but not the space bar--switches over to the right side. After which, you can only scroll up and down with the arrow keys--2 and 8 on the numeric keypad do nothing." This is outside of my wheelhouse and sounds like it needs to be passed on to Rachenera. A user reports that they don't see Zelica's memorial frame in the picture selection room when she dies in the Philon quest. I think this is because they are missing 4643: Zelica Tree Switch in their save file, which I suspect was added in a retcon revision. They have not responded to my requests that the save file be checked. Additionally, they report that Weapon 368, the Erosian Orc Sword can't be used by orcs, presumably because it is set to Weapon Type "Pure Orc" instead of "Orc Weapons". I don't know if this is because it is intended to be used in Balia's quest and don't know if the user knows either, it looks like they gave themselves one of every weapon for testing purposes. The image they included with the report seems indicate they also mean that the "bug" encompasses the Orc Blade, Advanced Orc Blade and Advanced Orc Staff, but their written description of the weapons involved is "The new Orc equipment, the blade and CLUBS" so I dunno what they are talking about. Another user notes that the Succubus guard @ 7: Simon's Route/Orgasmic Palace/Orgasmic Palace B1 (025,016) who is necessary to talk to to set up the Philon Slaves Return investment is removed at the start of Nalili's quest to allow access to the dungeon for the orc in Nalili's Judgement of Solomon schtick. She is never replaced so if one does not hunt down the Philon Slaves investment before starting Nalili's quest, they are Shit Outta Luck. It might be best to replicate code pages 3 and 4 for this event as pages 6 and 7 after the completion of Nalili's Quest. (The user also reports that the orc remains visible after you start the quest if you do access the Philon Slaves Return content, but I don't understand what they mean here and the event code doesn't seem to bear them out, so I would ignore it.) I finished my playthrough of the Ch 4 without any problems with Riala's research menu in the HQ, but still have to go back and fail the Tower Front threshold in the Erosian War to make sure that use case is working properly. That's all. Hope you are having fun.

I gotta disagree on it being a real issue since that's what I want in an MC. A blank slate to fill in the blanks myself. It's what made the protagonists of SMT or Ultima really good. They were shaped by thr player's actions and choices alone, and the eorld and its characters reacted accordingly. Having TOO MUCH personality is a bigger turn off for me than having too little ever could. It's all about the how you frame the story. Like, in TLS. It isn't 'my' story, but Simon's. Sure. You can play as Simon, but you're not Simon, wh8ch is the problem for the kind of roleplaying experience I want and crave. You 'can' have a great, titghtly enough story with a 'blank slate'. What you're describing is also fine and valide, but shiws how little many players value 'putting themselves into the story' by filling in the blanks themselves. A decent middle of the road, compeomise approach would be Sheperd from ME, I guess... but onpy for the first 2 games. 3 can eat shit and die for all I care. My point is, as long as the story an interactions are there, and YOU have the choices to be at the center of the story, NOT SOMEONE ELSE, then that will always be the better RPG experience for me personally. Sure we can guide how Simon or whoever's story ends... but it'll never be MY story... and that's what I want. What you call 'generic' or blank is perfect for letting 'me' fill in the details. It's why I love dungeon crawlers more than most narratively driven RPGs. Hell, Srive for Power/Conquest even let you write in character backstories! A very rare feature I wish was more a thing... not that I could see too many ppl use it. Too fucking lazy. The onus of the main character and experience should always be the player's. My issue is that too many games rely on somebody else to tell the story... or just aren't good at creating a story centered around a blank slate. It's just easier if it's all preset... which isn't what I'm interested in these days. Big devs or indie... most just don't do that except forthe bold and the super old school. I'm just tired of not being able to get that experience. I can't even name anyone to have the illusion.

Lamsey

The controls issue with the quest log has already been reported to Rachnera and fixed, FYI.

Long Tran

...Sigh. ...I'd like to say I can agree, but I don't. If anything, it all just comes off as rather dismissive. I'm just going to assume you don't quite understand what I'm 'actually' looking for in an RPG. It's NOT about the limits. I'm fine with that. It's purely about getting the experience 'I' want out of the game I'm playing within those limits. You're missing the point if you're actually suggesting tabletop RPGs to a guy who isn't interested in playing with other ppl. ...Just... Whatever.

sierralee

As Lamsey said, the controls issues are hopefully handled. I will also hope that the Zelica part is due to the retconned switch. Since the Erosian Orc Blade is in the Pure Orc block, I'm going to join you in assuming that this report is making assumptions. Fair point about the succubus guard. I've added two duplicate pages attached to completion of Nalili's quest. So hey, maybe I'm on top of these reports!

Long Tran

Look. As long as 'I' can make the main character, then that's all that matters. You 'can' have a decent narrative with a player focused narrative. ...But sure, sentiment appreciated....

Decarabia

I think I fall on the extremes. I have tons of respect for protagonists with rich personalities, see them react and shape the story. I enjoy creating my characters in sandbox games like M&B and Kenshi, letting emergent narrative reign free. But I dislike silent protagonists in RPGs, it makes me feel awkward rather than immersed. Anyway, have you checked Balrum? I stumbled upon it a few days ago, don't know if it's within your tastes but from afar it seems to fit.

sierralee

Normally I don't jump into conversations in the comments, but I'd ask this one stop. I'm intensively focused on the next update and struggling to work without distractions.

Long Tran

I actually like silent protagonists myself, but hey.

DukeLeto7

All around cool walkthrough writer Thosha reports that it is possible to win the battle in Troop 1222 Ghenalon without triggering the script for Vhala to learn Arrow of Lust firing. Since there is dialogue in the aftermath of winning contingent on having learned the skill, this may be intentional.

DukeLeto7

Final note before I forget, whatever happened to Qum's Premium Steel custom equipment?

Dragof2

Welp, I really can't imagine a more ringing endorsement than Sierra Lee recommending this game.

sierralee

I did plan for that. How much faster did he win? If it's much faster, I can move up the skill. But if it's the sort of thing you're unlikely to do on a first play and he's only a turn or two faster, I'm fine with that. Qum's idea becomes the Little Simon, or at least that was my intent.

DukeLeto7

I forgot about Little Simon.

lostone2

I like this idea from the Discord a lot: https://discord.com/channels/896059111106551859/896059994531831878/1221939786609328189 As you sound kind of busy I'm going to copy it here literally. Odin suggests: "thinking about it, I'm a bit bummed you can't get the Otherworldly Robes enhanced later on, it feels like it'd be a good thing to do with Mithyn" I'm very conscious that it's probably not the right moment to share this but I have been in holiday for a bit. Maybe it could be considered for the 1.0 game release or later versions.

sierralee

While I don't want to change the robe's primary characteristic (MDF > DEF), I suppose adding some MAG isn't a crazy idea. But this is going to be deferred until the optional dungeon update, which is when I intend to make a number of balance tweaks.

Chad McChadington

Just finished up Noblesse Oblige and if anyones thinking about playing it...do it. It was fantastic and I enjoyed every second of it. The dialogue can be a bit...annoying with how the characters speak and the sex scenes can kinda run on but aside from that the game is great and well worth a play if you enjoy TLS.
