Though this post will have a bit of a "post-vacation catchup" feeling, I've actually been back and busy for about a week now!

In terms of my vacation, while I did some things I've wanted to do, as usual after traveling my dominant feeling now is "never again". The positive way to reframe it is that I have renewed my appreciation for how optimized my home environment, I guess. Also tons of passion for working on things, so if I can catch up, that should be exploding forth!

(One note from my travels: I visited a salt mine, which was surprisingly interesting. Aside from the historical/cultural value, I got multiple ideas for designing mine dungeons in RPGs. Mines have a reputation for being conventional - you know, tunnels and carts - but I think drawing inspiration from the real world could create some memorable ones.)

The main thing in my sights is the postgame of TLS, which is a lot of work, only partially done. There are some pieces I've been plugging away at for a while, and I did work a little while on my vacation: I used idle time in airports and bus stations to write the sex scenes for the postgame. It makes me happy to think that people don't know the Serious Business Lady is typing absolutely deranged sex scenes. ^-^ Trin and Lilith get one, for example. There are actually 15 brand new sex scenes in the postgame, which may be excessive, but they're done!

The main task preventing me from focusing entirely on that is writing the fifth book/arc of Depthless Hunger. Not being able to get this done is a huge failure of my time management and I feel bad about this. =/ I have written a lot, but I try to maintain a minimum level of quality that requires editing. At least I feel I have transitioned back without too much loss of momentum.

What else? I posted the first monthly update for DStP and it's a public one. There is a fancy little roadmap (thanks to Annikath) to make me look like a professional.

For a bit of fun, there is a Geo Guesser inspired game taking place on Discord:

Basically, it's testing your knowledge of TLS by seeing if you can recognize a map from just a few tiles, and it's branched out in different directions. Jump in if you want. ^-^

Basically, May is going to be a pivotal month for me. I need to recover from my vacation and catch up on a lot of things, but hopefully I will be able to do more than that, getting ahead on my overall workload and setting up for the rest of the year.

So Trin/Lilith and 14 final member scenes?

sierralee

Everyone gets involved! That is actually how the number got so high: once I had so many characters in one, it felt wrong to leave anyone out.

Captain Hair

Well now I'm expecting Dari to somehow drag Vhala into a scene.

I remember the last post-vacation post being something along the lines of, "Dunno if it was restful, dunno if I should do another," so honestly, I expected this vacation's assessment lol. Depthless Hunger has been amazing this book. It's been so gratifying to see all their progress come to explosive fruition. I'd been meaning to ask, will there be a more detailed announcement of what the audiobook deal entails or is that legally hidden behind a contract? Good luck with all your work! It's a damn lot.

sierralee

The exact news should remain secret until the official announcement, which sounds like it will be toward the end of the year. It is a five book audio-only deal with Audible (yes, the biggest player in the space) that will involve a rerelease of the first book as Sarah Lin. They have given me a decent chunk of money, which means they'll also put marketing into this and want it to succeed. You know my negativity here, so I'm not convinced sales will be meet their expectations. =/ But this is still the first time a corporation has put a significant amount of money toward my career, so if I'm burning a bridge at least I'm getting something out of it. And from the reader's perspective, you're guaranteed a complete five book arc.

AnythingAtAll

Woah, didn't know the Sarah Lin name would be involved! Although, what did you mean by burning a bridge?

sierralee

It wasn't the original plan, but there was a lot of money riding on using my better-known name. Working with corporations is different from my own projects - my less successful work still makes a profit and helps support my career. But Audible has given me a chunk of money expecting a good return. If they don't make a sufficient profit, they will probably never give me an audio contract again, hence a bridge burned.

DankPotatoes

For what it's worth, I think including everyone was the right move, even if it led to a longer wait. We only get one chance to say goodbye to this cast of characters, after all :,)

I see. I really, truly hope Depthless Hunger can blow up then. Beyond the first half of the first book, it theoretically has everything a mainstream audience wants. Hopefully, all it needs is that extra marketing.

It's funny that you mention mining because XKCD just came out with a comic that mentioned ruina montium, and digging into that a bit really emphasized to me how little I comprehend actual mining practices, considering how common mines are in media. Underground structures are incredibly interesting playspaces that are underutilized by the simple mine cart dynamic we usually see. For a D&D campaign I was running recently I had an underground lab that had been fully locked down (including the ventilation system) and the NPC's inside were surviving by converting low level spellslots into oxygen via electrolysis. The mechanics of that interaction were probably dicey, but it made for a fairly memorable group of NPC's and mechanics by gesturing vaguely at a real issue with a very short development timescale of an afternoon. It would be very cool to see what you do with an interest in creating a mine or underground space that's based on the reality of a specific style of mining.

Random, unrelated, assortment of endgame nitpicks: When examining the shard in the extradimensional HQ, Yarra muses about finding a way to keep everyone alive. Monologue should probably be updated after she had that conversation with Death telling her it'll barely be an inconvenience now. The red flashes during the demon attack section of the final battle are really bright. Wendis can get into negative stamina if she stays with Simon to face Hesther.

Monologue should probably be updated after she had that conversation with Death telling her it'll barely be an inconvenience now. Good catch for more alternate dialogue! >The red flashes during the demon attack section of the final battle are really bright. Dunno. Would you be happy if I dialed down the Strength field of the event that controls that? >Wendis can get into negative stamina if she stays with Simon to face Hesther. IIRC this has been reported but I decided it wasn't worth tackling. If there's no way to really exploit this (I think?) and if you can't take more actions with negative stamina, I'm okay with this as a representation of her overexerting herself.
