It'd be difficult to overemphasize how much more on top of work I'm feeling compared to two weeks ago! Lots of things have fallen in order and I no longer feel like my vacation will handicap the entire year.

My first priority remains TLS. This postgame is a really heavy lift... and I'm getting a bit nostalgic because this is the last heavy lift. There will be more work afterward, but that's polishing and revision and art direction. This current period is the last multi-month stretch where I'm dedicating the vast majority of my creative energy to the world and characters of TLS.

There will be a lot of positive posts in the future, and celebrations of the game, but I'm afraid we have to talk about a sad thing first:

As you can see, TLS has lost it's "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating on Steam. T-T I knew this was inevitable, as the rating has been dropping since release; because long term fans can't review more than once, catching stray negative reviews keep accumulating regardless. To maintain 95% positive, the game needs to get 20 reviews for every negative one, which is tricky.

Now, if you look at the negative reviews you see some people who just dislike the game, that happens. But on Steam you also get things like this:

TLS has a lot of Russian fans, but any game on Steam has to deal with these:

And then there's this gentleman who is deeply concerned about everyone's psychological health:

Every time the game gets one of these, TLS needs to find 20 new people who love the game just to balance it out. Of course, it's amazing that my little project has been able to keep that up for this long, but I think there would be concrete benefits to holding a little longer.

I said that losing the Overwhelmingly Positive rating was probably inevitable, but I've hoped to maintain it until the big 1.0.0 release, because that's the game's last boost on Steam, when many new players may pick it up. Right now it is right on the edge between 94% and 95%.

The majority of people here have probably already reviewed, but I'm asking now: if you have a viable account you're willing to review NSFW games with, please consider leaving one now!

I actually haven't left a review yet! Doing that now. I remember that third review cracking me up, and it still does.

"Russian language is not supported" Well do what the rest of us do with foreign language RPGMaker and VN games, get a real time text grabber and run that through an automatic translation program.

Warstrike

I haven’t left a review yet. I can do so but would it be more useful now or just before/during 1.0.0? (I have never looked at or added steam reviews so I am genuinely curious)

sierralee

Really appreciate every review!

sierralee

Either helps! Normally I suggest "do it now" because I know people can get busy and might not later. If you're pretty confident you will post one regardless, there's a small benefit to having some new reviews just after launch.

AchtungNight

I only review complete games on Steam- it doesn’t feel right to me to do otherwise. But I have enjoyed the game, I mentioned it in an erotic fanfic I wrote, I logged over 200 hours playing… you can be sure the review will be positive when it comes. Your call on how to handle the bad reviews- might be funny to include an arachnophobia mode to turn the spiders into Hello Kitty sprites or something. Different language support is a huge door to open. Find a good translation AI?

Abso Haram

lmao why'd those two dopes come back and review like a month after they stopped playing. Edit: A lot of those reviews are by dummies "Don't want to use keyboard" or "Not enough porno" or "I'm bad at the game" lol. Doesn't help w/ the rating, but still funny.

Zekuro

Can't review more than once unfortunately. Don't let steam review bother you too much. Spend 150 hours on steam, 300+ easily before I started playing it on steam a few years ago. I still remember when the game had no art at all for scenes. Gratz for almost hitting the end of the road for this one.

sierralee

Completely fair policy, of course. If there are more people like you waiting to review, maybe that will even help balance out the negative rush when it launches. As for translations, regardless of the source, the engine doesn't support multiple strings for each line of dialogue, so I don't even have an idea for how it could work.

sierralee

I appreciate all the people who have already reviewed, of course! Those count just as much. ^-^

in fairness to that third reviewer, you did completely fail to add a trigger warning for the inclusion of characters in the story you wrote. Some players are very sensitive to references to controversial topics like theory of mind. I'm...kind of kidding? We're in a rough place, culturally. I already left my review, but I have some friends who have been waiting on 1.0.0 to start playing, and I'll pester them to review when they do.

Ark Tolei

As a more serious followup I can only imagine how difficult it is to navigate making adult games in an environment where a decent chunk of the potential playerbase is strongly opposed to the idea of other people having sex.

Lord Forte Games

Sorry to hear you have to deal with the junk reviews too. <.<; I've gotten some pretty ridiculous ones myself, so I know the feeling. Hope you end up getting back up to overwhelmingly positive for 1.0 at least. Would add one if I hadn't already. Gotta wonder why some of these people bother. Heh, in the "so absurd it's funny category," not sure if he's hit you, but I recently got one that was completely false and written by a guy with approximately 16,000 negative reviews given. Guy is truly on a crusade against... *checks notes* Pixel art? Games made in anything not Unreal Engine? Either way, you're not suffering alone from this idiocy, much as I wish neither of us (or anyone else) had to contend with such low-effort nonsense.

sierralee

Oh wow. Normally when I see ridiculous opinions on Steam I comfort myself with the idea that the person may be clown-farming, but that guy seems to have a very high opinion of his own opinion. =/ Your reserved response was probably the right way to handle it.

Lord Forte Games

He really does. XD; I was honestly too flabbergasted to even be angry. I actually think I'd heard of him through a friend like a year or two ago, but never though I'd actually encounter him in the wild this way. Hopefully he sticks to SFW games and you never have to, since I didn't see him at a quick glance through yours. Thanks. Yeah, I think so too. No point in engaging too much when his review was in complete bad faith, but can't fully ignore it when it claims the game is abandoned. >.>; I do think you're probably right about most of them, though. That or they just have incredibly short attention spans and can't fathom that they're the outliers.

Considering you already went back to Overwhelming Positive, I prefer to delay my review after the full release. Plus, I'm the type to write a lot about what I like, so I'll use that time to polish my wording ^^ I'd say having only 35 bad reviews on 701 total is already amazing. Also, I checked some of said reviews, and was surprised that most of them are actually pretty legit. Some having gripes with the combat system and the controls, others with the overwhelming choices and need for a guide, but overall, their reviews were focused on what they personnaly disliked in their game experience and stayed respectful. They actually did 'good' negative reviews. Considering the exemples in your post, I expected most to be troll spams or attacks aimed at the sexual nature of TLS, but there was actually not many of them. Taking in mind the toxicity of some online communities, most of your bad reviewers are the cream of the crop, believe me.

"A person strongly opposed to the idea of other people having sex." Guys, I think we found Estevan's Steam account. He not only survived... HE ESCAPED

Ark Tolei

Truly. Estevan is a character that is shockingly grounded in reality considering how cartoonish his ideology and behaviors are. That steam review is not an uncommon mentality in the adult game scene. Commenters are frequently arguing amongst themselves about whether X character counts as enough of a self-insert to not have it be netorare. The steam review is just a rewording of "this is ntr because simon isn't a blank slate self insert, and ntr is degenerate". I imagine there are quite a few reviews with functionally identical messaging.
