FYI, today's post contains minor spoilers about Four Liars. Specifically, the thing that happens at the end of 0.1.0. This isn't a story-destroying spoiler, more of a foundational piece of the game similar to the real protagonist of TLS. I wouldn't talk about this if I didn't think the spoiler was basically harmless, but you can make that decision for yourself.

If you prefer to avoid 100% of spoilers, you will want to skip this one. If you want some insight into the creative process, a peek at new assets, and input on a weird problem, read on!

As context, and to space out the spoilers a little bit, first I'm going to mention that Final Fantasy Resonance came out recently. Big Square Enix game, throwback to series nostalgia, more could be said about it, but this isn't the place. Technically spoilers for that as well, I guess.

What's relevant is that there is a character who starts off as a light mage and can transform into a dark mage. This is superficially similar to the situation with Mina in FL, and if that wasn't enough, the FF character is named... Fina. -_- Technically the build of FL came out prior to FFR releasing, but is anyone going to believe that? I think the similarity will be too odd to ignore.

Here's the original concept art for Mina... though not all of Mina's concept art:

Mina begins as an absurdly naive girl in the prologue, and here are her completed expressions (actually she has more):

But at the end of her chapter, we find out that this is a false personality she created in order to infiltrate the light mages, which she discards in order to return to her true self. This is where I have more new art for you, because this is some of the progress I haven't posted due to spoilers:

This is not the conclusion of Mina's arc, and I'm headed toward something considerably more complex (which I won't spoil here). Now, I don't have time to play a long RPG like FFR in the near future, but I am reasonably confident based on the writing team that Fina's arc and Mina's arc will not be very similar overall.

That said, the superficial similarities are frustrating. Aside from the names, they go through personality shifts, switch from healing to offensive magic, and even have pink/red color schemes. This is all 100% coincidental, but I admit the similarities are eerie.

I'm not going to change the story of Four Liars based on this, but I'm seriously wondering if I should change her name. Fina and Mina are just too close for comfort. People can sound off here if they want, but this is definitely the direction I'm moving.

On a personal note, I'm frustrated that, when FL comes out down the road, some people will almost certainly think that Mina is a riff on Fina. T-T Completely unrelated, I promise! Annikath can confirm the designs well before FFR came out! Hopefully I will be able to make FL a quality-enough game that people will view this as just an amusing weird coincidence.

It's clearly a coincidence, but I'd def say just change the name. You'll bring down accusations from around 20% likely to like, 2%. Someone somewhere will still say you copied from FFR, but as long as it isn't at a critical mass, players of FL can simply correct that person.

Grim8P

Unless there is some awesome reveal later on related to her name, or some other plot point that requires that name specifically, I think you should just change it now to put the thought behind you.

Eldritchreality

yeah, I'm also in the change the name camp. It would have been nice if it hadn't happened at all, but at least it happened early in development.

AchtungNight

I agree. Change the name, bad luck. Maybe to something that means “liar” in a different language and give the other 3 protagonists similar names?

Sara

I wouldn't worry about the similarities, can probably just ignore it, or change the name if you think it's a real concern but I don't think it's something most people are going to latch onto. I will say that making your argument based on FFR's release doesn't really work though, since FFR is a non-gacha remake of Brave Exvius which is 10 years old now.

Aris Katsaris

Yeah, just change the name -- "trojan horse personality" isn't something that by itself makes it look a riff, but the name would do that.

Ark Tolei

I think games with superficial similarity to this are common enough that it would be weird to assume a direct relationship. Grandia 2 immediately springs to mind. It's a fairly common trope to, via some mechanism, put the goth filter on a white mage and make them a black mage. What you're doing with that visual is much more important and interesting than the utilization of it, and bringing what would normally be an act 3 reveal of a BBEG or other secret antagonist, and bringing it into act 1 for a protagonist that remains a protagonist after the reveal is a very interesting premise. I struggle to imagine that final fantasy resonance will do anything more interesting with the concept than just pre-making the inevitable goth fan-art, but some might call me cynical.

I've weirdly been basically where you are. >.>; When I played Triangle Strategy, it was like... oh, the protagonist's arranged marriage fiancee is... a red-haired princess... from the kingdom to the north of his... who happens to be a fire mage... and is mistreated by her half-siblings... and discriminated against over part of her heritage. Oh, and their class names are both literally "Pyromancer." >_>; In my case, changing Ariadne's class name was an easy choice, at least. Changing a character name is a harder call, but still probably the wiser choice unless you're really attached to it.

sierralee

Yeah, it's strange how sometimes things just line up. It's just a statistical thing, given the sheer number of details that exist, but it's eerie when one gets so close. >_>

I don't think it matters much. If anything I think the similarities works in your favour. You're already known for taking well-known tropes and giving it a twist, and light-to-dark and dark-to-light shifters are not super unusual nowadays. So I agree with what Sara and Ark Tolei said. I don't think people would notice, and of those that do, they will recognise the trope and see how you've used it differently. Perhaps it'll help to expand your comparison to how these shifter type characters are generally used in stories.

Nathan Phoenix

A healer that transforms into a damage dealer and/or has a split personality. That's honestly a common trope. So I don't think you need to worry about it

lostone2

I think that a name change it's indicated, in this case. Probably a longer one and, maybe with a last name, too? That should help with the differentiation too.

AchtungNight

“Flameweaver” sounds way cooler than “Pyromancer” anyway.

Lord Forte Games

Yeah, I agree. It did push me toward more unique class names in general, so not all bad.

cathulion etharn

don't forget to use this as an inspiration to make two similar named mini-characters that get mistaken for each other comedically or don't, if there's no design space for it
