New public version is out, check the blog:

https://the-last-sovereign.blogspot.com/2018/04/tls-0333-public-release.html

Some of you have rightly been suggesting that I use Reddit more to try to promote the game. I've posted in two of the usual subreddits and a new one that someone helpfully suggested:

https://www.reddit.com/r/rational/comments/8advus/rthfdcthe_last_sovereign_deconstructing_nsfw_game/
https://www.reddit.com/r/lewdgames/comments/8adtoa/the_last_sovereign_0333/
https://www.reddit.com/r/NSFWGames/comments/8adt42/the_last_sovereign_0333/

Other suggestions welcome if people have them. Anyway, see you next update!

I'm too old to learn how to Reddit, so I tend to just assume it's full of whippersnappers, scamps and ne'er do wells who are against the natural order of things. At least its more reputable than Twitter, but Mos Eisley spaceport is more reputable than Twitter. Hell, the Fucklord is more respectable than Twitter.

DukeLeto7

(Counts version numbers... ) Where did 0.33.2 go?

Greentext Guy

I'm still suggesting you shill on /aco/'s weg threads. Don't get me wrong, the vocal minority is a bunch of assholes but if you want a bunch of people to know about your game go there, drop a link, and answer some questions.

sierralee

Reddit is useful because it's a very large site, but you have the ability to show your content to a subset of people who are more likely to be interested. Likewise, to peruse content that focuses on an arbitrarily small interest. I don't use it much myself, but I get it. If you find me using Twitter, it will be begrudgingly.

sierralee

It was sent only to a few people for the testing of fixes.

sierralee

I appreciate the recommendation, but I'm afraid I won't be following up on this one. I get the impression that most people there are at least somewhat aware of me, so I think showing up would just wear out whatever welcome I have.

DukeLeto7

In all seriousness, what I think soured me on Reddit was two things. First was an incident in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings where a Reddit Digital Lynch Mob formed the conclusion that they had IDed the bomber, but it wasn't either Tsarnaev brother, and the innocent guy had to go into hiding. Second was when I was trying to access a particular subreddit to get advice on something I had a timetable on and I was informed I had to spend a while building up digital karma by liking things before commenting. I'm guessing the reason neither of us care much for Twitter has to do with the character count in our writing styles.

Decanter

Oh hey, I remember when someone else posted about TLS (then TLF) in /r/rational. It was somewhat well received, aside from one person who read the intro text and was like "lol sooo rational /s"

Dmitry F

I think it really depends on which subreddits you go on that will determine your mileage. For someone like me who frequently lurks on subreddits like r/math or r/DIY, I tend to get a lot of content that I consider worth looking at. I might only understand 1/20th of what is posted on a more specific subreddit like r/math, but that only brings more information to ponder. I personally wouldn't recommend the usual subs that are extremely popular or normal because I don't generally find them very interesting or they are occupied by a bunch of whippersnappers like you mention. Graduate student and up please ;).

sierralee

I remember that too, actually. When posting this, I was trying to remember if it was /r/rational or just a similarly named subreddit. Regardless, if some people see it and sincerely enjoy the game as a result, I'm happy.

DukeLeto7

In fairness, I also sometimes find useful info using Google to search past Reddit threads. Can't really see myself lurking in even the most esoteric of academic subreddits though.

Bladestorm

I've never kept to much with these social networks I just check the wiki and patreon for updates about this. Guess it's time to play through this section again and lock in my decisions.

sierralee

Oh, that's completely fine, I was just commenting on the subject for those involved with that. Meanwhile, I believe this section is probably finalized, so feel free!

IndefatigablyBeatific

I was doing a new playthrough, and while resting at the Blue Rose inn in Stineford, I got a dream sequence conversation with Wendis I've never gotten before. I've never seen this mentioned anywhere, do you just have to rest a certain number of times?

Rachnera

What's the difference between /r/lewdgames/ and /r/NSFWGames/?

Decanter

Well, reddit doesn't have rules against making two boards about basically the same thing. Read their self-descriptions on the sidebar and you'll probably know as much as we do.

Decanter

Not really. It's a one-time scene with a 1/7 chance of happening, as with all Blue Rose scenes that aren't just a brief sprite animation.

sierralee

Actually, I know a little more. /r/NSFWGames was the older of the two, but had various internal issues like moderators going AWOL. Some people migrated to /r/lewdgames, some didn't, and now they're kind of competing duplicates.

Desertopa

I had no idea it was actually a sub, do you know if it was spawned off the spate of rationalist fiction that followed in the wake of Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality?

sierralee

I believe it was. HPMOR is first in their list of related communities.

DukeLeto7

Pointless Pedantic Verbiage Quibble: In the Zirantia section of the game, when Yarra's team investigates the IK's corruption cache used by the National Action Party to infect their supporter, Hilstara says: "I think you are significantly underestimating the vast human capacity for closed-mindedness." Hilstara is speaking about the leadership of the National Action Party, which is not human.

sierralee

Yeah... English is lacking a common word that can refer to the nature of sapient non-humans. Not so much of a problem in real life, perhaps, but inconvenient in fantasy. I've never found what I feel is a good solution for this and often have to awkwardly rewrite.

DukeLeto7

I'd try "people", in this case "people's vast capacity", Since the Kingsmen's rallying cry could be "Look at these elves and Zirantians, they think they're people!"

DukeLeto7

Of course, then you just walk into "Unpeople are people too!"...

Leveler All

It does get a bit confusing at times, been mean a human is a elf that sucks at archery, or a zirantian without wings, a woman without magic, tough the backwards mentality of the action party (and in general) is universal regardles of race, naming races gets werid, what about minotaurs or cyclops, my guess will be that we will refer as them as humas since they are bipedal.

DukeLeto7

No, that leaves the winged Zirantians as inhuman, since everyone knows humans are featherless bipeds.

WaxerRed

This is a little late but I kind of wish there was more of an option to talk to Kalant some more before going and getting him support. I know Tyna has a crush on him, but we don't even ask him if he has a crush on her back or if he even wants to be a contender for the throne.

Darthjake

Kalant was going through an identity crisis as I recall when Simon first ran across him. It sounded to me like he, (Kalant), did well in the last war with the loony IK, and did so without the powers of a chosen. That, in and by itself speaks well for him, and using him as a wedge from the other royal contenders is a valid option I feel. But I still want Tyna for my ruler harem, dog-gone it!

sierralee

That's fair. I can say that you'll get more time to talk with him as the plot progresses.

TheArcanist

*Holds up a plucked chicken* "Behold, a man!"

Trevor

Found a small bug. When invisible in the Ardford bathhouse you can talk to the clerk behind the counter.

lostone2

I feel your pain, as I'm in the same boat. But some clever guys have noted that she has no slot in the Leaders section of the harem, if Esthera is on it apparently (of course I personally preferred when the slots in the Harem were not so defined). Also the lack of RPs it's a bad sign, although for quite a while Sarai didn't have a *visible* RP counter.

lostone2

Who needs even more releases, the relevant thing is that we have the changelog MWAAAAAA... We only miss the release DATE, a very important DATA. Is probably only funny in mi mind but...

lostone2

The syntax is pretty easy to understand at least.

Ripe

Just noticed something weird... my save at start of 33.4 say my Harem Size is 19. But going through Yarra's Harem menu there is only 17 names entered. Assuming Robin is 18th that still leave one member too many. On a bit more testing, using Simon's Reflect skill to run "Sending the Message" scene once again set the Harem Size to 17.

sierralee

Hmm, this is a bit weird. I added a script that is supposed to set the variable to the number of characters in Yarra's menu. I suppose the issue could be there, but this is odd. The scene you reference should only be able to increase the number, not decrease it. The script is run when talking to Yarra in the base. What does that do to the number, starting both at 17 and 19?

Ripe

I can't really explain it... I used a save that listed 15 as Harem Size. Then I made a save once allowed after triggering new content and it suddenly said 19. After that I triggered the scene in Reflect and it set it to 17. Forgot to take screen and I overwrote the save. Tried to replicate it but now it's like it should be.

sierralee

Weird. There may be a marginal case that's bugged, but we'll have to see if it gets reported more.

Bladestorm

okay I just check my save had harem size 15 until I did reflect send a message went to 17 weird but I don't know if this would affect anything.

Decanter

That increase in Sending A Message should really be changed to run that script call instead. In theory, an old save could correct from 15 to 17 via Yarra, then run Sending A Message to get to 19.

sierralee

Yeah, will make the change. This should be fixed for future versions, thanks for the reports!

Jan Dietrich

I just literally feel like getting infected with several new serotypes of the spanish flu every time i dare to access reddit. Really though, i find the layout to be rather confusing, at least if you're just a rare lurker site. On the other hand, i also dislike 4chan for the same reason, so that may be just me and my sensibilities.

Dmitry F

I think many of us can agree that much of social media is populated by people that can only be described as a contagious disease considering how it seems to spread to others. It makes me appreciate the smaller communities that people make where you get to know people. It really helps with the quality of conversation and ideas.

StalkerRoguen

I must say that I don't really mind, grandpa Simon already has enough women. (I say that but I check on Bertricia every update... -.-)

StalkerRoguen

Hey Sierra, loved the update, but there is something that I want to ask you: <a href="https://imgur.com/a/6V5eH" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://imgur.com/a/6V5eH</a> This screenshot is from the end of the update. I thought that all the quest points should be green. Is it possible that I missed some plot points or it’s supposed to be this way?

sierralee

Those objectives are more general guidelines, not quests that can be completed. Therefore, they weren't turned green, though perhaps they should be. In any case, that doesn't mean you missed anything.

lostone2

The weird thing about that image is the Aramite Bounties quest...

StalkerRoguen

Yeah, it's weird. I did all the quests and bought the place.

StalkerRoguen

Thanks to Ionstone, I found a bug. I used some earlier saves and found out that if I go to the Aramite Bountie Center on chapter 4, he adds the quest (even through it's done) to the roster again.

sierralee

Hmm. Seems like it's probably related to the changes done to the quest journal, as this was one of them.

Rachnera

Most important bug ever: Tal x Plant is available when Simon uses Reflect even if Simon stopped Tal back in Chapter 1. Also, to be confirmed: In Aka's Path, two bullets (Stop a Jade clerk and Stop Inquisition harassment) in the Plight of the Poor Quest never turned green in spite of me cloning the scum clerk and getting the right dialog with Sarai. According to the wiki, I'm also missing 2 relationship points with Janine post-reunion, which may be related.

Decanter

This was reported before, but with that added detail I believe I have a fix.

Decanter

Tal x Plant is because it wasn't tracked whether you got the scene, only whether you fought the plant. To avoid taking the scene away from old saves may be infeasible at this point. Aka's route (not path) is because the slum map got reverted or was never updated in the first place, weird but shouldn't be hard to fix. The missing 2 RP shouldn't be related to the quest stuff, since there's no game logic that checks the quest status and does anything except modify other quest status. Most likely you are assuming you did every possible thing to help the slums when you actually didn't. Just to name two possibilities commonly not done: you must summon demons into the mines, and you must drop off Altina to stay with the slum elves, which is not even possible if Simon ever fucked her.

Rachnera

Ah, got it, you're right. Janine's page says you can get up to +5 from "helping the underclass", but the Secret stats page explains that you need the maximum possible Poverty score to do so, and it's only possible by losing Altina. Otherwise, it's "only" +3. So there's indeed no bug. Thanks. For Tal, it's pure nitpicking, but maybe the scene should be unlocked as a default and only removed if the player explicitly chose to "Stop him"? That won't fix this tremendous bug for old saves, but that's not really important.

StalkerRoguen

I believe I can pinpoint the correct event, if it's going to help. Also, do you think this will be automatic fixed in the future or should I wait a newer version and replay it? (I get all itchy looking at a quest that it's already done but is still there : P)

Seil

Random thought. Can we research and weaponize that substance Kingsmen used to set elven ghetto on fire? Because even after almost two years have passed, it still continues to burn to this day.

sierralee

Decanter's fix has been implemented (Thanks!) and it includes a fix to delete the old quest. For now, you can keep it out of your quest log by avoiding the building, I believe.

sierralee

If I recall correctly, originally the player didn't have the opportunity to stop Tal and it was added after a request. Didn't think about it's placement in the Reflect menu. I'm not sure there's a good way to remove the scene as you suggest - the script is designed to unlock scenes, not lock them. The map error has been corrected.

sierralee

Haha, not sure whether or not I should change this for verisimilitude. You could think about it not as a single fire, but as the ghetto frequently catching on fire.

DukeLeto7

Two unbelievably piddling bugs. (OK, maybe Tal x Plant wins the meaningless competition over these.) 1. Text window overflow on the line added to the Elleani's Estate NG politics breakdown "Our current king is part of the old line..." 2. This is tough to explain. At the ground floor HQ level, if you select a wall format that has what I guess should be called a "Trim", look at the difference between the blocks directly to the upper left and upper right of the throne room down staircases (the parts that make up the doors to the armory and the kitchen) and the blocks that have the same function in the doors from the entrance corridor to the two meeting rooms. The lower set have trim along the entire edge of the doorway from the perspective of the player, the upper set doesn't. Here are some screenshots with a black/red wall type that emphasizes the contrast: <a href="http://i.imgur.com/BlMJAUS.jpg" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://i.imgur.com/BlMJAUS.jpg</a> <a href="http://i.imgur.com/9suAuyK.jpg" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://i.imgur.com/9suAuyK.jpg</a> Having looked for these sorts of "trim discontinuities" on the basement level, there seems to be a pattern, and it seems that they happen when there's a wall coming out at right angles immediately to the left and right of the wall segment with "missing" trim. I think the intention is to show the trim at the bottom of the wall segment having continuity around the corner, but that breaks perspective, so just making the walls have a uniform trim around the edges facing the player strikes me as the better choice. I checked and this apparently won't be a nightmare to recode. On second thought, this is more dumb then Tal x Plant.

Decanter

This has been reported before, so it's certainly bothering more people than Tal x Plant. If you do successfully patch it, be sure to share with the original scripter and RM community.

DukeLeto7

I only looked superficially at the code doing the substitution and saw it was apparently subbing out one tile with an associated tile with the same structure, so it appeared that just changing the tiles on the map design would implement the fix. If there's something more subtle going on I can take a more detailed peek at the Tile Swap script...

Decanter

Yeah, pretty sure the issue is in the Tile Swap script. It also does stuff like putting tiny land shorelines around water that didn't have it before, which is a real problem for other ideas like trying to use it to visually clean up the water and/or green up the landscape in Gasm Falls. I don't know why it has this issue; it's not like the engine's native Change Tileset function has the same issue.

DukeLeto7

Hmmmm... Lemme get back to ya...

Rachnera

What's the catch behind the Rune Shield? For its price range, it has good defense, good magical defense, and even some extra bonus on the side. Are the slums' sisters incredible rune mistresses, or in touch with a really good, and not really business savvy, rune smith? Can I recruit this person to improve my army quality? Cause it fits so well in my plan. 1. Recruit a sword, shield and armor succubus (Nalili) 2. Ally with knights (Order of Silence) 3. Get cheap yet good quality enchanted shield and armor (this) 4. Some extra stuff 5. First ever platoon of magical succubus knights

austin fagan

for some reason when i go to download the new update i get 33.4 and i can't get past the screen from when we finished the small update you gave us before this

sierralee

Hi, can you be more clear on exactly which screen you're stuck on? Also, when was the last time you played? There has not been an "end of version" screen for several updates, until 0.33x went back to the old pattern.

DukeLeto7

OK, it took WAY too long to figure out that my not at all complicated Tile Swap Test Map needed to have a defined A3 portion of its tileset for the tile references to correspond to the displayed tileset grid. I mean more time than I squandered looking for Mp3 versions of the Beatles' "Norwegian Wood" and Dylan's "Rainy Day Woman 12 & 35" as BGM for an incredibly lame audiovisual pun, which no sensible person would have done at all.

DukeLeto7

I'm, like... super confused by this.

sierralee

Might this be better done off Patreon until a solution is found? One viable solution that I don't want to pursue is to simply avoid any formations like this in the base. I don't like how it looks more than I don't like the problem with those tiles - it's certainly not desirable, but changing the layout and making the doors uneven affects all wall choices. But going back to your original post - text overflow fixed, thanks!

DukeLeto7

Yes, being typically self indulgent, sorry. The A tileset fragmentation just seemed a rather odd design choice. This is going to take me some time to pick apart if at all. Will report only if a possible solution is found.

Decanter

Well, for being in the shield slot, the DEF isn't that great. I feel the real odd part is that it's not found in higher-end magical shops - maybe because it's meant for fighters and not mages?

sierralee

Haha, wasn't sure if this comment was in jest. For the record, I had two thoughts in mind when I made the Rune Shield: 1) It's a generalist item, trading its primary stat for the others. You'll see a number of these. 2) I intentionally had the main Yhilini shops carry mainly mage equipment, while the slums have warrior equipment - still magical for a Yhilini twist, but not as respectable.

Hexs

I really enjoy the game, but one of my main gripes is how I have to follow a guide to the letter to see much of the content. I've had to replay the game a bit too many times to get things i've missed during thorough, honest playthroughs. Now, I don't feel I can play it correctly without referencing an unofficial guide as I experience the content. I'd appreciate it if you maybe considered easing up on super obscure elements going forwards. I'm talking about things like hidden counters on how many steps/ actions you taking determining reveals. All the same, I respect it is your game at the end of the day. Do you have an official guide for the hidden content in this game? I've been following your work for years and will continue to support. Thanks for your efforts!

austin fagan

that is weird im getting that screen right now it says something about you getting mixed feedback on allowing player to travel freely

Decanter

Personally I think succubus knights would be neat and I hope that part wasn't in jest either.

humble bystander

I know this was covered before but I still can't unlock the Janice scenes. I'm pretty sure I've spoken to almost everyone but she still says that we can't rest. I brought all but like one of the house of petitions extras (Heard that was one of the reasons) but still doesn't work.

DukeLeto7

OK, got an actual bug to report. A chap came through the Wiki forums after getting stuck in Aka's Route. Playing with an eye to the Walkthrough, he jetted out of the Palace at the outset without speaking to Janine on the throne and triggering the event that should have populated his quest log and given him the Rose and Jade Papers. Then he managed to accumulate 3+ Aka Progress by doing the four non-House Rose related sub-quests. This spawned the event page in which Janine prompts the player to have Trin jack her uncle, and doing so moved the event page to her discussion of the after effects of that decision, making it permanently impossible to get the Rose Papers and continue the game. You know what they say about trying to make things foolproof... you'll never equal the ingenuity of a true fool. Decanter and I went over the code (after telling the guy to restart the path and talk to Janine at the start, solving his immediate problem), and we think the fix is pretty easy. Just add an event page to each of the squares at the exit to the original version of the Yhilin Palace that checks to see if the Rose Papers are in the inventory and have Aka say something like "we should check with Janine before going out" and pushing them back out if they don't. Nice to have something be easy for once, eh?

Rachnera

No jest. I just realized I was always buying three of these things (one for Simon, one for Nalili, one for Carina) without a second thought, something I don't do for much equipment (they're always a downside, be it price or a neglected stat). Succubus knights would seriously be awesome. As would be our own succubus flying corp (as hinted in Yarra's route).

Seil

It was a joke about rather obscure ingame thing. If you do not have Altina at all during Invasion of Yhilin, elven ghetto gets destroyed. When that happens, you can't enter it and there's a guard by the barred gates, who says something along these lines: "Elven ghetto is a burning mess, you can't enter". If you do not repair the ghetto, the guard's line does not change. A lot of time passes after the Invasion while Simon & co travel to other regions (elves, floofs and dwarves). Then there's a post 3AW time skip as well. And the ghetto continues to burn still.

Decanter

Indeed. Plus someone has to catch those who fall off our airships, and I'm not sure what other means of personal flight exist.

Rachnera

Well, there are flying spells. Yarra uses one (provided by the organizers) for the race in her path. I guess they could work on humans/orcs too. However, this may be some high level and rare magic, like teleportation, so not so easy to weaponize.

sierralee

Did you already play 0.33.x? The version put out in this post is the public version of the one you already got as a patron - the only differences are bugfixes. The next version that will continue the story will be 0.34.0.

sierralee

Hmm. I hear what you're saying, but feel like the game overall hits the balance I wanted. There probably won't be another section like the chapter 2 free roaming, where the player's actions are counted up, if that means anything. There is no official guide, but the wiki is your best bet.

sierralee

When are you trying to unlock the Janine scenes? Let me know where you are in the plot and whether or not you've used the fixer event (the cloaked NPC standing by the Yhilin crystal). If you haven't used the fixer, see whether or not it says you have enough points. If you've already used the fixer, your next chance will be 0.34.0, when the check will be run normally.

sierralee

Ah, this kind of thing is the dark side of having good walkthroughs. But in this case it seems like it can lead to a complete dead end, so should definitely be fixed. It could also be fixed by adding Self Switch A to Janine's event, but I think a palace entrance event is a better idea to enforce the plot order somewhat. So fixed, thanks!

Grey Wolf

I think you should be told about the ability to return to withered mountain, like how Kia and Nia's plot is in the quest log now, Min is awfully easy to miss too. Those optional paths are important it would be convenient if there was a quest log entries, the Givini mirror thing is also pretty random.

austin fagan

huh strange but thanks for helping me sierra

Jan Dietrich

I've got another little but nasty bug: When trying to exit the dialogue with orilise regarding the sabotage of farnans trading routes, just "ESC"-ing it leads to an affirmation. Had to re-load several times because of this.

sierralee

Ah, I only changed this on one of the branches. Fixed, thanks!

genericname12345

Question, Sierra - checked the wiki for the Ardan Succession Crisis and I was wondering: Is it even possible to get the absolute maximum scores all around?

sierralee

No, there are several choices that are tradeoffs.
