Lots of stuff going on, but I won't bury the lede: TLS 0.56.0 will hopefully be coming out next weekend. My attention has been more fractured than normal the past few weeks, but I have been able to work on it, and many things came together this week.

It's not completely certain. I still don't have two Tower maps I commissioned, though I should get them soon. The core event is basically finished, but that alone would be unsatisfying, and the other quests are still scattered in partially-finished state. If you were thinking of asking questions that aren't time sensitive or sending me long emails, maybe hold off a bit, or at least be patient with my responses.

Meanwhile, we have a few fun things!

TLS Memes: Decanter made several, so look here to see them.

Worldbuilding Posts: In preparation for the eventual release of another TBS book, I've resumed making worldbuilding posts, which you can find on the specific blog or fan subreddit.

Book Club: My novella Blades Falling Softly was chosen for one of r/fantasy's book of the month clubs! If you're interested, there's a Q&A with me and there will be discussion posts throughout the month. If you're a $5 patron or have been around for several months, you can just message me to ask for a free copy.

OEA Maps: Lots of Grimmton stuff this time. You can see that I did a mild redesign of one of the exterior maps for more visual diversity. The others are town interiors. Check them out, especially if there are any artifacts from all the shadows.

I'm personally fine waiting a bit longer for a better product but I am super excited for the new content! And congrats about Blades Falling Softly! That's super fun and the comments in the thread were encouraging.

Darthjake

I enjoyed blades, although imo, that conversation that the end did have some forshadowing, but that didn't make it any less enjoyable.

BleBle

I like the trees, they are pretty neat. Tower maps? I thought we were going to jail!!!!

sierralee

Thanks! This novella has gotten me some broader attention and an industry connection, but we'll see if it goes anywhere.

sierralee

Yeah, it's meant to stand alone, but I also wanted it to have interesting seeds for readers of the series.

Captain Hair

I hear Yarra masturbating and muttering about goddess fucking in the distance.

Decanter

The Wasteland shadows look fine, if slightly sharper than those those in the southern Wasteland. However, those poison pools are so samey. Those shorelines don't look natural at all and the bubbles form a freakin' grid. The interiors look okay but I'm surprised there are no bloodstains even in the weapon shop since he attacks people.

sierralee

I should have mentioned that the poison pools, like the other liquid tiles, are actually animations in the engine and this screenshot is just an approximation that will be animated in the real game. That said, I don't know that the shorelines would change, so say more about what you'd want. Haha, good idea about bloodstains in the weapon shop.

WaxerRed

Adding to Decanter's idea of bloodstains, I also see a broom in there, so perhaps a joke about how a broom so completely drenched in bloodstains would only make a bigger mess rather then clean anything. I don't know if you've ever tried it any game before SL, but I hear broom jokes are very funny.

Decanter

I just feel the shorelines should look less like tiles on a grid? All the shorelines are straight and line up with the x or y axis, all the corner curves are the same size and arc with maybe two exceptions? Animated bubbles is better but hopefully they don't all animate in the exact same cycle. Maybe that's a big ask for RPG Maker, dunno. As for the bloody broom idea, perhaps it's bloody because it caved in the head of a dead redheaded NPC nearby. That might be carrying the joke too far, though.

WaxerRed

Stretching a broom joke too far? NEVER!

Lamsey

I think the grid-like alignment of the pools is fairly normal for RPGM conventions, but yeah, I'd hope that the liquid animation isn't so grid-like, since that's what makes it look unnatural to my eyes. Not sure if it's feasible to get a general ripple cycle for the main bodies of water, with separate bubble sprites on top that can be placed more selectively? The shop interiors all look good to me, although as others have noted they could do with some more indications of the Grimmness of the Tale. Maybe bloody stains on the doormats would be good, along with some more debris from bar fights in the pub?

Darthjake

I can just see it now, a sign outside the weapon shop, I need a broom, fetch me one now!

BleBle

Have a bad day, not gonna lie, ending crying. Hope you are having a good day.

sierralee

Yeah, good point about the square shores. I didn't think about it because it's so conventional for RPG Maker, but I'm paying for complete parallaxing here. Completely changing the animation, though... I don't think that one is possible. We're already dependent on the engine animation cycle for that.

sierralee

I'm sorry to hear that you had such a bad day! Mine is not bad, and I'm enjoying my work. I hope that some of what I create can at least distract you from the bad stuff for a little while!

BleBle

thank you, I am just trying to not be a bother, glad you are alright hope, it continues like that.

Desertopa

Oh, for the upcoming TLS update, do you have any plans for Infasis and Mherin to show up? I don't suppose there's a lot of time now for them if you didn't already, but I only just remembered that you said to remind you about them later the last time I asked what happened to them.

sierralee

Yeah, I'm stretched a bit thin. This would be good to include in 0.56.x, though... if anyone is passionate about this, they could help by telling me the last switches involving Infasis and Mherin's fates.

Decanter

There are no such switches, aside from maybe self switches for if you talked to them at all during the Thaumaturgical Academy bits in 3AW. We just haven't seen or heard of them since.

sierralee

Ah. My memory failed me and I thought that the death event could kill one of them too. Honestly, maybe it should have, since they don't have a lot planned for them...

Desertopa

My GF thought the same thing; when I asked her if she remembered what happened to them, her answer was "didn't they die?" They might as well have for all the relevance they've had since then. Since you're free to decide what happened to them at your leisure though, I guess there's nothing stopping you from using whatever existing switches you want as determinants of what's happened to them since. I do think a short scene with Mherin reacting to the changes in her and Robin's relative fortunes could be fun though.

WaxerRed

While I'm just going to assume Mherin is still probably stuck in her ways, part of me wonders if Infasis might just be mortified to see Simon again. Like a girl confronted with just how much time she spent putting up Jonas brothers posters in her room during her, boy crazy-stupid puberty stage of life. That could be a 0.56 side quest! Infasis so desperate to escape being reminded of her past inappropriate crush that she flees the university. When Simon finds her drinking in the Steinford bar she flees the country. When Simon finds her trying to get into Aram, she tries to escape from society all together. When Simon finds her chilling with the potion Hermit, she flees the continent. When Simon finds her under a changed name in Erosia she transcends reality itself and escapes into the deepest recesses of the tower. But no matter how far she goes, she can never truly escape her own inner cringe.

DankPotatoes

"since they don't have a lot planned for them..." Wait, does that mean they aren't both secretly Ivala?

BleBle

Mmm well, if I can have an opinion, they should appear in Robin sidequest, for Mherin would be a good karma that Mherin end working under Robin "eat shit Robin". For Infasis because she is an airhead I think she needs some tutoring, Robin tutoring her would be nice, and it can have hilarious conversations, even some jeaulosy.

Decanter

I don't... really see Infasis as an airhead? I had the impression she was doing competent work defending the Academy in 3AW. As opposed to Mherin, relegated to some sort of supply clerk role. Rachila is the one who could die in 3AW, and otherwise could be guided to a role in the Stineford succubus tower.

BleBle

Mm well I think this is where the language takes his toll again. I ddn't mean to say that Infasis wasn't competent magically. I mean in life, wanting to bang Simon, having a behaviour of a child being in puberty, at least in my school there were some companions that acted like that (not wanted to bang some profesor) but they were pretty good as students. That's why I think Robin would be good as a tutor,Robin is a better role model,in some ways she is her friend and pretty sure she is better than Infasis as an magic expert.

Desertopa

I was thinking recently, while plenty of players would probably be happy to see Mherin get some sort of additional comeuppance, actually caring or dignifying a grudge seems probably inconsistent with Robin's character arc. But it might be possible to have it both ways if there was something Mherin wanted or needed badly enough to actually ask for Robin's help. Whether the player accepted or refused, it would still feel like a victory over her either way.

BleBle

Mmm well it is a possibility I tell you the scenario I think for Robin: -Lacks of funds are severe, staff is dismissed, a lot of empty spaces needs to be refilled or the Thaumaturgical Academy will close. -Robin ask his father help, finding staff and giving funds. -Mherin still acts as shit, Infasis as a puberty girl trying to get laid on Smon(funny conversations. -Robin find staff for a lot of diversity topics and genres in magic: *Riala (Succubus magic, helps to get more succubus in the academy for diversity, maybe director?). *Balia (Orc breeding specialist, also the typical proffesor in university that doesnt give a shit, can help getting orcs on Academy for diversity). *Wynn (Forbidden magic specialist like for example Necromancy). *Galvia ( haha smokestack tunnels goes brrrr, also can helps to get dwarf for diversity). *Sho ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHuoauaZ2Hk ). *Altina( Field magic specialist, also can help to get elfs for diversity). *Carina( Introductions to holy magic, also can be intermediary between the church and the academy, director of the well-behaviour education department, Infasis appointed as the monitor in the halls). *Rachila(Proffesor Snape, noble acquitance also can help in Succubus integrity). *Applications are open, feel free to apply. -With the objectives done a last wild conversation appears: Director: "Thanks to you we are on business again, and all with the improvements we can be the best Academy in years, there is a open seat for theoretical assignature, ¿Do you want to be part of this institution?" Robin: "With that position. ¿Can I continue on my investigation and learning on theoretical matters?." Director: "It wouldn't be the other way" Robin: "Then I accept" Mherin:*What?* Director: "Well then, Mherin you are appointed under her authority, please help Miss Robin in whatever needs she needs" Mherin: "WHAT???" *Hours later* Mherin breaks down , dramatic conversation, yare yare daze, redemption, Infasis applies for tutoring, Robin accepts and she will be her tutor, yay pillow party nights. *Sex* Mission acomplished! Also for the reward you can have the upgrade for the crystal. *Everyone is on the same spot as before in the castle* Disclaimer: The proffesors of my university were missing a lot in the schedule, so as students we have to..."learn for ourselves" but from time to time they do classes. Also i have in mind that Galvia would be in the castle sometime, she is a good mage and an specialist where no one is. This is a subjective opinion, nothing to do to the possible reality so hold your horses. The end.
