I wouldn't be surprised if the reason that thing was attacking the corruption is that it actually did quite a bit of harm to it. Since it appears to just be a very high-level wild demon, rather than a God, I imagine the corruption cut through it's it crazy strong conventional defenses pretty badly. I doubt it was remotely life-threatening, but I also imagine it didn't much enjoy getting its face gouged and eyes burned.
