It's a good balance against our first (comic) introduction to them as characters. A2 coming to free the vulnerable A1; then in their younger years, A1 promising to do so first for A2. The devotion is inate and cancerous, and to remove it would kill them both. Makes for a neat story.

yes, partly… i think… alot of it is a defense mechanism… like. adult a1 does not want a2 to be everything to him. bc. what if he loses him again. but the push-pull thing is based on… alot of other stuff ahaha… like a huge part of the reluctance on a1’s part is this early dynamic we see, where he’s a2’s self appointed guardian and he cant help but feel like he’s taking advantage of a2 even when theyre adults and a2 is the one pursuing him
