We’re days before WWDC as I wrote this so preparing for the expected avalanche of Apple announcements. It’s interesting that we’re expecting announcements because usually WWDC is just OS stuff. Should be interesting.
It’s dry times out there int he economy my friends, so we’re exceedingly glad you’re supporting us. We’ve had to cut back some expenses but it would be a lot worse without you.
And it’s been a rough end of May for the DTNS family. Sarah Lane had to move, always a stressful time. And my Mom passed away at the end of May. So if you saw me miss a few more shows than usual, that’s why. I’m doing OK. But if you have a moment at some point, raise a glass to Dianne Merritt.
Onward into the summer! We’ve got lots of un planned, including some great episode of Top 5 on the YouTube channel. And if you haven’t yet, check out the YouTube Shorts that Joe’s been putting together over there. Some of the best bits of each day’s show packaged up for a quick look. He’s doing great on those!

I really like to make podcasts. You may have noticed that about me. I’ve been doing it since 2005. And several of you have asked me over the years for tips on making them. I’m always happy to help of course. BUT I can never get across all the things I might want to.
Then it hit me. I was recently taking a course online and realized I could do that too. So Willie Scott (Wscottis1) and I teamed up to create “How to Make a Great Podcast.”
Here’s the pitch. “In 90 minutes, 20-year podcast veteran Tom Merritt (that’s me) shares his secrets for making great content. From research and preparation to compensating for your own blind spots and how to get the best out of co-hosts and guests. You’ll come away with a better understanding of how to set up each episode of your show to be the best. The course will focus on content but you’ll also have a chance to ask Tom for tips on other elements of podcast creation like equipment, production techniques and more.”
Sound interesting? Good. I want to do my first run with people who really get what I do. So I’m limiting this first course to just 10 slots. The rate I should charge for this is around $99. But I’m dropping that to $75.

Hey folks! Thanks for making another month of DTNS possible. I hope you’re enjoying some of the new efforts we’ve been putting in like increase interviews, some more varied guests and little more time to discuss things. These are all things we did int esponse to your feedback so keep it coming!
We have two Live with Its going at once by the way. Sarah has been talking about her new Roomba but she also plans to do a Live With It episode in April about the M1-based MacBook Air. So extra Its to Live With! Yay!
I imagine we’ll have another Apple announcement his month. We usually get a spring one with some new low-priced phones and tablets, so look for new M1 Macs as well. Just a hunch.

We’re more than halfway through 2020! Yay?
Yes, yay.
Look, I know some of you have thanked us for keeping the show going day in and day out through the unusual year we’ve all been experiencing. But we should be thanking you. We all agree that it’s therapeutic for US to be able to sit down and talk tech with y’all every day.
Patreonwise things are good. We lost a few backers the day we mentioned the word “Qanon” but more of you are increasing pledge (seriously you are the best!) and that’s making it up. We’re making it through thanks to you. I hope we’re helping you pass the time a little as well and keeping you informed about tech. Last month when I wrote this note protests were happening blocks way from where I live. This month it’s a resurgence of virus cases.
What amazes me is how many of you are not only still with us but even supporting us more. I’m still prepared for the economy to hit us all harder, but I have to say I’m stunned and incredibly grateful at where we are right now. Y’all rock.

So it really feels like DTNS is entering a new phase. We have staffed up with new folks. We’re doing new kinds of shows and the daily show feels as strong as ever if not stronger.
We’ve all put a lot of effort into that and none of it would have been possible without you. I know I say that a lot and I know it can sound like a platitude. But think about it. Without Patreon, I would not have been able to found the show on my own terms. I would have been succumbing to funders and advertisers wishes from the beginning. Instead I could establish a rock solid foundation for the show. When we did start taking ads on the public feed I could afford to stake the stand that we wouldn’t take advertising into consideration in any way in the operation of our content. Advertising was an optional way to expand what we do not a necessity we needed to bow to.
And all of that was started by patrons and continued by patrons. Like you. So really. Thank you. Your support keeps us focused on our mission of helping each other understand. Your help, help us to help everyone.

We’re also having our first DTNS_ALL HANDS meeting on July 16th. It’s not a listener-oriented thing but it’s kind of milestone that we have to get everybody together for a meeting. I don’t know that we’ve ever done that before. We’ll be introducing folks to each other if they’ve never actually worked directly and brainstorming on ways to make DTNS even better. We also have a new Good Day Internet logo from Len Peralta if you haven’t seen it yet. It’s slowly winging it’s way through the caches and feeds fo the internet. June’s going to be full of surprises. Maybe? Well one surprise is I’ll be out for a week. Yes I know I’m actually off the show one or two days a month but those days are spent writing and recording Know A Little More. June 3-10 I’ll be actually not doing work. Some call this a ‘holiday’. Others call it a ‘vacation.’ I call it ’trying not to feel guilty that the rest of the team is working.’ BUT once I’ve done it I can encourage them to do it too and get refreshed. So thanks for your patience. The team is strong so I have no doubt you’re in for some excellent episodes including Apple’s WWDC!
And coming in July is science Correspondent Dr. Niki Ackermans three part weekend series on seniors in tech. She has some really stellar people lined up to interview! Keep those suggestions coming of other people you’d like Saran and me to line up to talk to for future special weekend interviews.
Oh and speaking of Know A little More, it’s coming back June 10th with an episode on NFTs. (Side note we’re probably bringing in developer Christian Cantrell to talk about the future of NFTs later in the month, so you may want to Cath this episode of KALM. Hey folks! I feel like we’re hitting our stride techwise this year. Welcome to glorious April and thank you so much for being here. It’s been a rough year for all of us, so we extra appreciate you sticking around.
We’ve got a lot in the works right now! We’ve sort of settled int he routine of Saturday shows. So three times a month you’ll get a monthly round up of either photo, gaming or science news. Got any other requests?
Also, Sarah and Jenn are re-working the Live With It franchise and the first one will be about wearables Jenn is living with the FitBit and Sarah is switching from eh FitBit to the Apple Watch. Keep an eye out for updates from them and a scheduling of the final review in a. Couple months.
Also we have switched our streaming software so if you watch the Twitch stream or the YouTube video you should see a nicer looking presentation. Huge thanks to Joe for pulling that off and to Roger and Amos who engineered the transition.
This also means we now stream a half hour earlier at 4 PM Eastern. And we start with DTNS.
BIG NEWS. The extended episode (Good Day Internet) now starts with DTNS. I highly encourage everyone to switch to the regular tier now. No need for us to have the ALL and DTNS only tiers.

Thanks for taking our survey! I’m reading through tall the responses right now and making up a list of to dos based on some excellent suggestions! We’ll be meeting among ourselves to go over those soon and we’ll share with you any big changes we make.
Thanks also to everybody who watched our Streamyard tests and gave us feedback. We think we’ve got most of the issues worked out so we’ll be launching our video streaming to go through Streamyard this month. Technically this doesn’t mean much of anything to you. Where you watch and/or listen won’t change at all. It will just change the look of the video a little.
We MAY be changing the start time of live DTNS though, so be ready for that. We’ll let you know for sure.

We head into 2022 looking forward to an immediate deluge of announcements, as usual, from CES. Though not everything is as usual. We had planned to send Rich and Amos to CES to gather some extra content and set up a place to chat with folks at the show, but alas those folks wouldn’t be there. With so many big companies canceling their in-person presence at CES, most of the people we would normally talk to decided not to go. So we won’t be sending them after all.
Still, CES will happen and we expect nothing less than the long list of things companies hope to someday ship. We’ll do out best to cut through the hype and tell you the important things to understand.
As some of you heard on my editor’s desk, later this month I’ll be kicking off our planning for the year and that will lead to a survey asking you opinions about things related to the show. Look for that in February.
Also Dr. Niki will have a series on Scientists in Tech coming mid month looking at the crossover between the world of research and the world of tools and things we use. Dilsad Dagtekin is a Turkish biologist working on the effects of seasons on wildlife populations. Grant Coffey is the research database manager at Crow Canyon Archaeological center in Southwestern Colorado. He pilots drones to survey ancient pueblo archaeological sites and find structures that are otherwise difficult to see. Dr. Susan Leemburg, a neuroscientist who works at Charles University in the Czech Republic studies “teleportation” in rats– or rather how she tricks rats into thinking they’ve been teleported. AND Dr. Georgi Trenchev, a plasma physicist at the University of Antwerp who tells how to build our own plasma reactor and why we definitely should not do that.

Happy October! We have new iPhones, new Surface tablets with twisty hinges and even a robot dog-like thing from Amazon. Crazy September. And usually tech companies do like to drop another shoe or two in October. We have some enterprise stuff coming up like Google Cloud and Ignite, but I’d expect a possible second Apple announcement and maybe a few products from other folks as well.
And we will be with you or all of it. I hope you continue to feel just a. Little smarter and well-informed about tech than the other folks around you who don’t listen to DTNS. That’s what we’re here for! To help you understand tech without trying to get you unnecessarily enraged.
Sarah will be off for a few weeks starting at the end of October so wish her well. She’ll be back with us in November though, no worries.

Now brighter stuff. Experiment Week! I’m so glad the vast majority of you enjoyed our little week of trying out new things. I think we will do it again next year. My favorite email was the person who said they didn’t really like any of the show but we’re still really glad we did it! There were also a lot of people who liked the shows, and every show had a following.
So the question is, which ones will become actual show or part of DTNS? We’re still working through all that but we’ll let you know. Robb is very serious about The Tech Jawn, so bet on that. And Chris and Rod are already planning for the BBQ Tech show. More to come on the rest!
Of course September means we start to gear up fro announcements. Apple’s announcements came later last year so we may not get the September announcement we became used to over the years but then again we may. Microsoft already announced its Surface announcement for September 22. More to be schedule, I’m sure.

Wow. Almost to the end of the year and so grateful for all of you still being with us. I hope you’re getting as much out of the show as we hope. We really have a blast putting it together. And we have some great plans for 2022! Amos and Rich will be headed to CES in January to take photos, grab guests and operate not he ground in Las Vegas.
Dr. Niki is putting together a scientists in tech series to come on the weekends in late January. And we’ll be doing a “free HBO week” like Justin did for Px3. That’s basically where we make all he Patreon content available to everybody for a week so they can see what’s in there. That not only means all free users get GDI and such but that all levels will get all content like the editor’s desk and monthly bonus show and such. More on that next month.
As we head into the various holidays I cannot thank you enough for keeping ours bright. A lot of you know that Sarah had to be off the show for a few weeks for breast cancer surgery. She’s recovered and as you can see doing great. That’s in no small part thanks to you. Your support of this show directly supports our lives no matter what life throws at us. So thank you. We’ll keep working hard to make the best show we can on into 2022.
