Zelda II was the first game I got with my NES. The ZIIAOL GameMaker recreation by HoverBat is incredible

I absolutely love Zelda II, it is my favorite of the games and while some of that is nostalgia talking, a good chunk of it is the combat and weird explanation and funky translation.

cross-post from YouTube: I share this story every time Zelda 2 comes up but ... my brother and I had a defective gold cart of the game!! We played the shit out of it and could not understand why we couldn't beat the fucking thing. Schoolyard kids would think we're ridiculous because it was so "easy". The thing is, we could not find the hammer item. Nowadays obviously we KNOW it's in Death Mountain, but on our official Nintendo gold cart, the fucking thing just did not spawn, and as kids pre-internet we had no idea wtf we were supposed to do. One day my brother started a game as "IMPA" -- we wondered if there were other Zelda character-related codes, like how entering ZELDA brought you to the second quest in the original game. For some reason he ended up playing through this save and HOLY SHIT THE HAMMER WAS IN THE GAME!?!?!? We finally beat the fucking thing. Further testing, we discovered that just putting an "I" in front of our saves let the hammer spawn ... so I finally beat it as "IMARK" and "IPETER" worked for him too. So weird. We still have the cart and I keep meaning to lend it to a friend to dump. Over ~25 years of searching this online I've come across another few people running into the same weird defect. Seems really limited, and beyond bizarre.

Yeah, you should see about getting that dumped, that's really interesting!
