Jeff Gerstmann and Glenn Rubenstein reunite after literal decades to discuss what the heck they were up to in the early 1990s. For Glenn? Months of training to be on the stand as an expert witness in a high-stakes trial. For Jeff? A strong desire to see what the "Super Famicom" was going to be all about. But in the end, one name was absolutely inescapable: Nintendo. In this episode we cover Nintendo's bold moves to reignite North America's dead console market, Sega's weak initial attempts to counter, and... the most ill-advised public access comedy sketch of all time. Welcome to Game Boyz II Men!

An audio version of this program is also available here on Patreon. Thanks to all of you for your generous support of this and all my endeavors, I hope you appreciate this regular look back and how the heck I ended up in this weird line of work in the first place and our look at just how different this industry truly was, back before it was filled with public companies and venture capitalists and, well, all the stuff we tend to complain about when it comes to the games business these days. Was it better back in 1991? Uh... not exactly.

Man, this podcast is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Love hearing these stories about the early days of video games. Looking forward to listening to all the episodes and hope this podcast continues on for a long time! You are the man Jeff!

Can I get the audio version of this to show in my podcast app via a Patreon show feed or something?

This was great. What was the vibe like in 90-91 with the SNES looming over the NES and the Genesis out? I was only 4 in 91, and some of my favorite games like Ninja Gaiden are 89-91. Were the later classics as celebrated as the early?

How supportive were ya'lls parents through all of your video game endeavors? I was much younger during this time, but I feel like everyone thought it was a fad and childish to make a career out of video games, but both of your parents sound pretty supportive.

This is fucking awesome.

This is god damn amazing. Seriously, I could listen to these two talk all day.

Do you think the climate would be very different today if Nintendo had won the lawsuit? I remember Game Genie being big for that era but felt less relevant once emulation got big on the PC and at-home modding became more of an opportunity...

Hands down my favorite thing on the internet right now. As someone growing up around the same time it is awesome hearing both of your paths. Question for Jeff - we know how Glenn got into the games biz and heard about how you guys started running together, but what was your first foray? Maybe I heard it long ago but would love to hear it again!
