Hey! So that PSVR2 stream I ran earlier got hit hard by YouTube's ContentID stuff for music contained in Gran Turismo 7. Normally this isn't a big deal--the copyright holder claims the ad revenue but the video stays up. As I am primarily supported by you (thank you!), this YouTube money is not a major concern. I'll file counterclaims in the interests of fair use and move on. But these GT7 hits actually took the entire video down. Frustrating!

I'm weighing out a variety of options here. Originally I thought it'd make sense to just set up a burner Mega account and toss it up there. Maybe archive.org would be a solid place to host videos that are "too hot" for YouTube or whatever. But in the meantime, I'm self-hosting it right here:

http://bxr.me/raw/20230222-psvr2games.mkv

That's a clumsy URL, but that'll get you the same 5-ish GB file that I uploaded to YouTube in the first place. Or, at least, it should. Who knows, maybe this hosting plan I've been paying for for years without using has a transfer limit. Also, the video is encoded in AV1, which saves on some space, but makes it slightly less playable on some devices and less encodable by, say, Patreon's video encoder, which only likes videos if you upload them in x264.

Let me know if you'd rather I upload the video to Patreon directly, I've heard enough back and forth about the quality of Patreon's video player that I'm not going to immediately upload it here. But I can re-encode it in a more universal format and toss it up later, if you need it that way.

Also, those music claims are in appeal, so if whatever record company holds those copyrights decide that they believe in fair use, it may still pop back up on YouTube.

Hope everyone's having a proper Wednesday!

That sucks. Is the twitch archive still available to point people to? It’s not a long term solution but might save you a bit of bandwidth?

Persons Familiar with the Matter

you could give utreon a look. they're pretty easy to set up and if you have problems they have actual people to talk to.

Matthew Taylor

I haven’t checked but did twitch mute the audio on the archive ?

Thanks Jeff. Hopefully the YouTube nonsense gets figured out. People shouldn't have to walk on eggshells to stream games. No one, literally no one is ripping music from a game stream.

Kristian

I’d prefer a streamable option if possibl rather than a download. No worries though!

Fight the power! This is the video The Man didn't want you to see.

if the transfer limit ends up an issue i guess a torrent could be feasible maybe? otherwise in the mean time i don't see this that big an issue apart from possibly the size and/or download speed a person can do with it is an issue. if a person has an issue with the download crapping out on them when trying to grab it i'm just going to recomend jdownloader or a similar program that'll basicly make it so that it resumes the download when it can instead of downloading say half of it in chrome then it failing for whatever reason n having to start again.

I'm fine with downloads but not with a download speed of 250 KB/s :-p Edit: OK, it speeds up after some time..

Appreciate you making it available this way! Sucks to hear about more YouTube kerfuffle, but that seems the lay of the land nowadays. While I'd say archive.org would make for a great storage solution, it's been a constant question for me as well if there are really any viable streaming alternatives? Back to transcoding it into 240p and posting it on usenet, I guess!

Dave

Know what I do? (And, no, this isn’t a solution.) I download your Twitch streams the same day!

Was super looking forward to this. Thanks for the quick fix! I've had bad luck with the Patreon player so this seems fine.

AV1! Nice.

Thanks for doing this Jeff!

Jeff, the amount of effort you’re putting into making the video available to us, not to mention all the time you’re taking out to thoroughly explain the situation, really shows how dedicated you are to providing for your audience. I think I speak for everyone in saying THANK YOU. There are far too many content creators who just carelessly post garbage videos and blogs on Patreon to swindle some dough out of their audience. Your reputation speaks for itself, obviously, but it’s still a pleasant reminder that some people are out here doing it right. Thank you, sir!
