The analog phone call piqued my interest, especially combined with the Solitaires comment directly after, which according to James they shouldn’t have data of. Data can be sent through analog phone lines. It’s how we used to connect to the internet before the wide use of cell towers. In the 90s, when internet was just getting off the ground, we needed to use already existing public infrastructure to keep internet cost effective. The best way to do that was with phone lines, which connected to every house. But how does one transfer data through wires that can’t recognize binary code (computer language)? The answer is to speak their language: through sound. Ever hear an analog internet connection? That garbled, high pitched squealing? That’s data being transferred. The computer transforms its access request data (who am I, where am I, what do I want to access, etc.) into a sound file, which is sent through the phone lines, and is received by the host server, which takes the sound file and decodes the audio file back into binary. This process is called a “handshake”. It’s why (unless you had multiple phone lines) you couldn’t use the phone and the internet at the same time, because the phone line was already in use transferring data. So if I were to throw my theorist pasta at the wall with this: I wonder if that phone call had data in it that the Asset was able to decode, hence their knowledge of things James says isn’t in their data.
