I was walking my dog the other day and saw into a living room and all I could see was a still silhouette in front of a monitor that was scrolling a feed, for so long, and it was so haunting. Now I always think about it when I’m doomscrolling.

"My family tried to cosplay as rich" hit me hard, David. Hit my square in the childhood memories.

HUGE CORRECTION: This Love is on the original 1989. I’m officially not a Swiftie!

Hi Dave and Joy. These conversations between the two of you are so entertaining and enriching, they’ve become one the biggest value-adds of being a patron on here. (You’re also providing some real #couplegoals.) FWIW: I will likely never own the watch, but I have developed the routine of plugging my iPhone in every night before bed, and doing so OUTSIDE THE BEDROOM, and this has eliminated in-bed doomscrolling; I also don’t touch my iPhone in the morning until I’ve had 20 minutes or so of mindfulness meditation. And yet: I still worry about how much this technology has impinged on my daily moment-to-moment life and “fractionated” my attention span. Thanks as always…

I've got another restaurant related dilemma: Last night, I was in a group of 8, we all ordered starters. 7 plates arrived. After a while, the one person who didn't get theirs asked the waiter whether they'd been forgotten. Response from the kitchen: 2 of the starters were served on 1 plate (4 dumplings instead of 2). This had not been communicated by the waiter. By then, that person had already eaten them all. The restaurant's position was it was her fault, because on the menu it specifically said 2 dumplings. They refused to bring new ones, the one person ended up paying for both (6€ each). Question: Who's fault was it really, the kitchen's or the guest's? (Added context: The person next to her had, in fact, received 1 starter containing 4 pieces of a different type of dumplings, and they were all small enough not to appear to be 2 portions.)

David Chen

Sounds awkward! But if the menu said 2 dumplings then I think it’s on the customer. That said, server could’ve mentioned this as a courtesy but it’s not required if the info has already been communicated somehow

It was! Fair enough, probably didn't help the two of them were seated at opposite ends of the table. Anyways, the way staff ultimately chose to handle the situation (not just unaccommodating, but outright mocking) is another story.

Tbh if the bill is significantly unbalanced and the people who have the bulk of the balance don’t offer to pay an outsized amount to make up for it, I have no problem asking for the server to split the check or asking some other way. If they take offense to that it’s a sign that this can be my last outing with them 😆 Also: I get worrying about imposing on the servers but most point of sale solutions restaurants use these days make it a few simple button presses. Probably a lot easier for them than dealing with one check and multiple cards split multiple ways.

Easy bill solution - at the time of ordering, specifically state you want separate checks. I always do this in large groups, and then tip much higher to make up for it. In fact, many times when I'm out with four or more people, the server asks up front if there will be separate checks.

On Apple Watch stuff - maybe I missed the specific context, but I’ve been using this app iCatcher for over a decade for podcasts. One of my favorite features is the ability to easily send podcast episodes directly to the watch so I can listen to them while out for a run without my phone. iCatcher has a native watch app that can play them back without a phone. Headphones can connect directly to the watch for this.

On the splitting the bill stuff. I’ve been living in Abu Dhabi for the last 10 years. Whenever I go out with my coworkers who are also coming from western counties, we would always split the bill according to what each of us consumed. An Emirati lady that was part of our team would also participate in this. But the first time we met up for dinner with our significant others, her husband was shocked that we were doing this. She told him not to worry about it, this is how we did things. Turns out, in the UAE the common practice among locals is to fight for who is going to cover the totality of the bill. I personally find that paying for what you consume is the most fair way of doing things. I would find it acceptable to split the bill in equal parts as long as everyone consumed about the same thing value wise. So there is no one being screwed over.

I'm glad we got a follow up on Joy's thoughts on the new Taylor Swift album. I don't like her music, but I am fascinated by her as a phenomenon, so thank you!
