Hey Patrons: it’s the day after the election and the result is not what we’d hoped. We wanted to record our reaction to all of night’s events. This is raw and unfiltered. Hope it helps you process what’s going on.

We recorded this podcast on an iPhone in a moving car traveling from Madison, WI to Minneapolis, MN. Please forgive any audio issues.

I love you both and am grateful you posted this. As with all of the times I hear Joy on the podcast, I am reminded just how much Dave married up. :)

I was waiting for this so badly. I know it's like a weird parasocial thing but last night I kept thinking like "well if Joy's ok then maybe I'll be ok too."

Thank you for posting this. My wife and I are gutted, our little girl has a lifetime of fighting this ahead of her.

Dave, audio is actually fantastic... Joy's optimism is so damn powerful... and I laughed at it because I thought, "Where the hell does she pull that from?" So darn admirable. I'm with Dave... I took a half-day today because after a brief Denial stage, I jumped straight to the Anger stage and knew it wouldn't be healthy to be around just a hint of Trump support... Joy, you are such an inspiring person. Thank you for coming here (Wisconsin) to do what you did. Dave, you are one of the people I use as a compass to keep me pointed in the right direction. Fist bump to both of you. I'm so happy you are together on the way home. I hope it's safe, uneventful and Joy sprinkles some more of that optimism Dave's way :) It's such a reward to "know" (of) you both and to support you. Thanks for sharing this.

I heard your voices and just started crying. Again. Maybe the crying will stop soon. I don’t know how to have hope right now, but maybe tomorrow.

And no matter how well-run something is, a well-run bad machine is still a bad machine. And this machine, as well-run as it was, did not produce what we needed it to, making it a bad machine. I hope we can learn from this and change and not just optimize a proven bad machine further, expecting different results.

There's a part of the country that lost trust. We can only get trust back by building and reinforcing community. Be a part of their pain. Listen to it. Engage with it. Integrate with it. And try to do it in person—or at least—not in some digital shot in the dark. Social media has made it too easy to shoot your shot. Trust is work. One big lesson I learned this year in building my business is that people have a harder time saying "no," if you're there to walk them to "yes." Especially if it's a good but complex idea. Be closer and stronger for them, so you face their fears with them. Walk them back into the light. Do it together. We can do it together. We have to do it together. Thank you, Joy, Dave, and Carter. You've always been great at carrying us into your light.

Thank you both for posting this. I have been in a deep, deep depression. I don’t know what to do. Dave is right. It will get worse. I want to get out of here as soon as possible. If I can throw in my two cents. Blame has to go to the MSM for both-siding everything, for never following up, for placing the worst about Trump on page 10 while Biden’s gaffes are in the front page. On a slight happier note, Joy, thank you for everything. Thank you for chatting with me on the Slack and for inspiring me. I’m glad you are okay.

On the subject and note of community, I want to put out there that if anyone here is in Atlanta, I would love to meet and make new friends who share similar hopes and values - and a love for Dave and Joy. I’m holding my family close today but also feeling like finding and making new connections with people who might live near me could help be uplifting.

I just want to say Thank You! That's all the energy I have for right now.

I know we’re just strangers on the internet but as odd as it sounds I care about you guys. And I’m here if you need anything. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Linda Liu

I can’t really form great, deep thoughts like everyone else here right now, but I just need to say to you all: Joy - THANK YOU Carter- THANK YOU Dave- THANK YOU as well Thanks for your hard work and thanks for putting something out for us to all share in today. I think a lot of us needed this post today.

Vera B

I can't express how much I needed this. Thank you both so much for everything you do and thank you for emphasizing the importance of community. I am so grateful to be part of this community 🩷

I think Joy and I are cut from the same cloth. Yes, things will be bad, maybe even disastrous. But the fact remains that we already have objective, empirical and incontrovertible evidence that it is possible for our democracy to survive four years of Trump.

Because of all the good folks here, I wonder if there is anyone who has any advice for me and my husband. Our marriage is almost certain to be overturned soon. We will lose many important protections, what can we do legally?

Joy o Napping

The advice I have seen is to re examine all your legal paperwork and make sure it is written as if you were not married. So this would be your will, health care power of attorney, finance power of attorney, etc. Just name each other by name and remove reference to spouse. This way it will stand regardless. A family lawyer can draft these documents for you if you don’t have them already. I’d get it done before January.

Joy o Napping

What I think is good about this approach is it does not concede in advance that marriage rights will be taken away. It just gives you more flexibility. The family attorney may also be able to give you more specific advice for your state if needed.

A double dose of this from me, too! Dave and Joy are important to me, as is the community of folks on here. Much gratitude…
