It’s a story about a charlatan who comes into a once happy place, convinces everyone he should be the supreme leader, has everyone turn on a woman of color who happens to be incredibly capable, and sends her into exile. But enough about the election, who’s seeing Wicked? Regarding what I personally am doing: as a naturalized citizen, I’m getting all my papers ready in case the Gorkas and Millers get deporty. I’m stretching myself from being an introvert to build as many community relationships as possible. And I’m listening to you guys, my parasocials peeps who can say the things we’re all feeling so I don’t explode them on people around me. I don’t know how bad it will get. It doesn’t matter. If it doesn’t get as bad as in my imagination, that’s a win. If I have the people I love loving me back, I still have that. Keep doing what you’re doing (while we can still listen). It means everything. Happy Thanksgiving and Black Friday 🙃!

I enjoy listening to you both talk about how you are feeling and the steps you are taking to help deal with what has happened. I’m Australian so we don’t have these extremes or they get mitigated due to the way our elections are held. Wish you both all the best and if podcasting helps you cope with what is happening just keep doing it I’ll always be hear, ready to listen.

My spouse and I appreciate hearing about your post-election experience and thoughts, which sound quite similar to ours. My main post-election action has been replacing my daily habit of checking NYT/WaPo with some more intentional sources (including bsky) and looking for independent media whose values actually align with me to fund.

I just love these episodes of you two talking about random topics. You could seriously talk about absolutely anything and I’d listen. To answer Dave’s question, please continue talking about politics. I find it very therapeutic. I have very few people who I can safely speak about this stuff with. Almost everyone I know is either an Evangelical Christian who enthusiastically voted for Trump or a fellow Liberal who just doesn’t want to talk about it. Love the poker talk!

***the idea of “senseless kindness” as a counter to systemic evil*** It’s just so happened that I listened to this episode right after the most recent episode of Conversation with Tyler (Ep. 227- BONUS) Tyler Cowen and Russ Roberts spent the entire time talking about Vasily Grossman’s “Life and Fate” [From description of the Episode: …] cover Grossman’s life and the historical context of “Life and Fate”, its themes of war, to totalitarianism, freedom, and fate, the novel’s polyphonic structure and large cast of characters, the parallels between fascism and communism, the idea of “senseless kindness” as a counter to systemic evil, the symbolic importance of motherhood, the psychology of confession and loyalty under totalitarian systems, … For anyone who might be interested here is the link https://conversationswithtyler.com/episodes/russ-roberts-2/

I don't live in the US so these podcasts are just a nice window into the "other America" away from the drifters and alt-right ratbags. You both have sincere and powerful viewpoints and from two perspectives that I usually don't encounter all that often but wish I did. I still find the two podcasts with Joy after the Biden-Trump debate and then the one after Harris being the nomination some of the best examples of great heartfelt podcasts ever made. Happy Thanksgiving. (Also not being from the US but having the election, then Halloween, then Thanksgiving all over my social media must mean I get a green card just as a participation trophy. Right? :)

History is messy. Always has been. But that STORY that remains has a tendency to either make it the WORST time ever or whitewashed. Go read Heather Cox Richardson’s recent essay on that assassination of Kennedy. Things have been (always) horrible in the past. That is not to excuse the dread or preparation. BUT I think we have to prepare for the worst (and I feel lost in what to do exactly) and keep on going. Anyway please keep doing these. Good food for thought.

I think these are really valuable conversations. I guess I was just much more prepared mentally for another Trump presidency than most Democrats. The writing was on the wall the moment Biden chose to run for reelection. I bought the Kamala hype at the beginning when it finally seemed like Dems were in array, but once the campaign actually got going and it pivoted to the right I knew it was doomed. Campaigning more with a Cheney than Shawn Fain, refusing to distance yourself from an incredibly unpopular incumbent, ignoring the uncommitted movement, conceding on the border issue instead of presenting an alternative view… there were stark differences between Harris and Trump but when you campaign as diet republican a lot of gettable voters are either going to choose the real thing or stay home. People were begging for a change and Kamala deliberately presented more of the same and expected that to be convincing enough. It was mind boggling to me. The next four years will be ROUGH, but Trump is still incredibly unpopular and isn’t competent enough to keep all these plates spinning for long. Much damage will be done in that time. The question is if future Dem leadership is willing and prepared to rebuild what’s been broken in a new and better way. I hope so, but I’m not confident.

Your conversations with each other are a therapy for sanity. Nothing convinces you that you are crazy quicker and more effectively than thinking you are alone in your thoughts. So, deeply grateful for you two.

I appreciate how much you share on the podcast about how you are feeling and what you are doing around the election stuff (bigger than the election etc) I have zero idea what you mean by preparing..but then my cousin just built his own "rocket stove" in case fuel runs out or something (part of it is he just likes to build things and his philosophy gives him an excuse) and am really happy folks like you and my cousin exist.. this is from an essay by Erin Kissane and is more directly about interacting with "social spaces" than dealing with looming authoritarianism but I think it begins to describe my reactions to this episode of your podcast. "For my purposes, the Dark Internet Forest complex is one that uses the forest to contrast the feeling of a psychologically dangerous landscape with the one of spaces of retreat, and which—inescapably, because of its roots in Liu’s heavily philosophical fiction—presents retreat as the only real option. Above all, it’s a series of descriptions of anxiety and of awakening to a sense of loss. Even for those of us spared the worst things the internet can do, this is a feeling most of us know—in 2019, I was almost entirely offline myself. Then 2020 happened and rewired my sense of what we can and can't afford to surrender, which is what keeps me circling around these ideas like a dazed shark." https://www.wrecka.ge/ also Silo is awesome.. I keep having to remind myself i won't look like Rebecca Ferguson even if I get the "down deep" tattoos.

To answer some of your questions Dave. Yes, these conversations about the election are very interesting... please don't stop. No, I'm not as worried as you are, but that is mainly because I don't live in the USA. Having said that, I'm still very worried as an unstable US can drive a lot of instability globally. But what I'm most worried about is that have lost any chance to do anything meaningful to counteract the effects of global warming... The news coming out the US are just so sad.

Dave, we, as a society, have already solved the “less embarrassing than singing” while also being “not nothing” problem. And it’s not a bunch of dudes muttering an incantation simultaneously. It’s called a toast. They’re great you should try it.

Team Dave/charlamagne the god about how weak the Dems responses have been post election. Only one I’ve seen recently with any vim or vigor is jasmine crockett
