It might be because I travel frequently for work, or (more likely) because I’m broken inside, but my entertainment game plan is the polar opposite of yours. To me, that situation is precisely when I don’t want easy viewing / half in, half out / fall-asleep type content. We have YouTube at home! A long plane ride (sans WiFi, which I rarely purchase for this reason) offers a rare opportunity for forced concentration. It’s a time to do things I would struggle to do in my distraction-filled life. I load up on 3+ hour Criterion films, blindspots from the Sight & Sound 100, slow subtitled fare that I know I want to *have* seen but never actually want to watch, etc. Or I try to read a book cover to cover. Some of my best experiences with a book or a movie have been in that environment: Everyone around me is asleep, and my eyes are glued to the screen/Kindle. Example: Last year, I watched all 9.5 hours of Kobayashi’s “The Human Condition” trilogy over a single day of travel. I know. Unhinged behavior. P.S. I do vouch for watching movies about trains on trains. I’ve seen Before Sunset on at least three separate train rides, including one that pulled into Vienna station just as the movie was ending. I’m a sap, but it was the best!

Your relationship takes are truly wild. He wanted to experience something together, and instead of being honest, she lied. Early in the relationship is the time to be honest about what you want and need, not build a relationship on a scaffolding of lies and new Netflix accounts and hiding binges. Are we all just out here lying to one another and expecting that to be a solid foundation for anything?!

David Chen

Brandon: have you never concealed anything of import on a first or second date? This was a pretty young relationship. I dunno, felt like a reasonable small thing to mess up and not be 100% transparent about.

Joy o Napping

To be clear, I would not have actually lied myself and David would not have further into the relationship. But we didn’t discuss the honest approach much.

Late follow up to say Before Sunrise is the train movie I watch on trains, not Before Sunset. Important distinction!

Luke Shea

I have been a huge supporter of the Chen brand for well over a decade at this point, and this is both the best and most unhinged thing you've ever made public. Also the first time I've truly understood the ways in which you and Joy are similarly strange people. Wonderful to get a glimpse at the deeply weird humanity behind the reasonable, well informed hypercompetence you both project. I love this whole thing so much. Thanks for sharing yourselves this way.

Luke Shea

So with you. Planes are criterion time!!

Luke Shea

I completely agree with your Brandon but am also so delighted by the madness and strategy of these weirdos. Like I wouldn't love being lied to about a Netflix show on date 2, but if/when I heard this elaborate construction laid out before me in an eventual confession of true love, I'd be so tickled.

Aaron Miller

I watch a lot of TV and movies and I feel like cycling through streaming services is a perfectly reasonable strategy, especially for a single person with limited time/money. Not having Netflix might have been a red flag 10 years ago, but there's just so many options now and Netflix's catalog isn't really what it used to be.

Brandon Lee Tenney

Often to a fault, I am incapable of concealing things, whether or not they’re important. I freely and fully admit I am in the minority and think very differently than most people, but that doesn’t mean I think it’s right! To get even deeper, it’s probably the reason for my lack of success in jobs, relationships, and capitalistic life in general. It’s probably why I’m still typing right now! For me, it’s better to reveal myself early on because that’s probably just the tip of the iceberg anyway. In this situation specifically it was more of the impulse to conceal and all the extra steps to do so just didn’t occur to me, period. I’ve been listening for a long time for two main reasons, Dave: your curiosity and your ability and willingness to speak your truth. The impulse to conceal just didn’t seem to square with that, but maybe that’s just because I don’t know the person in question, so hearing it from you on their behalf was just too many abstractions for me to process at the time. On this topic, I’m just feeling such difficultly with being a good person right now, what it means to be a good person, what to teach my kids when so many bad people and individualistic impulses are rewarded, when being a good person is not incentivized by society… even working for companies like Google, Open AI, Meta, and you at Amazon—I feel my morality being ground to the bone. So the idea of having to conceal myself with even one more person in hopes that maybe one day they’ll accept all of me is too much. But hey, I’m divorced and can’t hold a job and somehow I’m still typing! Thanks for the space to vent and receiving my comment in good faith.
