Dave on Dave is an ongoing podcast series in which David Cho and David Chen gather together to discuss life and work. Also, usually David Cho has some harsh words to say about David Chen's stuff!

In this episode, David Chen and David Cho discuss the banning and rapid unbanning of Tiktok (see Taylor Lorenz's piece on it here and AOC's video series about it). Then, the Daves discuss their thoughts on how their doing as well as predictions for how 2025 will unfold, personally and professionally.

As a guy who did AI research in grad school and recently sold an AI startup: 1. Count me among the >2 listeners who are paying to hear how David Cho is doing 2. Today's Brutalist discourse also drove me nuts. Over the course of like 1.5 years, the general public has gone from not knowing what AI is, to having extremely strong and incredibly misinformed opinions about it. (And this is coming from someone who is absolutely against the use of GenAI as a substitute for human creativity. The public's ire in this case seems misinformed and silly.)

We do care about you, David Cho. It is nice to hear y'all talk about TikTok and how weird it has been. I feel like I'm in danger lol and oh my god the turning it off and on so fast was so annoying. I deleted all the apps out of vexation. Shambolic, indeed.

Great episode guys. My take on how these next four years will be different as opposed to 2016-2020 is that it doesn’t matter what political “wins” or “losses” he has. He’s gone in 4 years. It was so much more worrisome in his first term cause “wins” increases the chances he gets re-elected in 2020. Now he got the remaining 4 years, wins and losses…don’t matter. My two cents.

It’s feeling awfully 1933… Everything about this makes my skin crawl.

It is true that I pay for this Patreon partly to hear how David Cho is doing. And yes, this does round trip to our own household minus the Patreon fee, which is very silly.

In between jobs this week, so I turned off all social media to avoid going insane. I fully support you, but will skip this one, because I need to put my head in the sand about this stuff for a bit now that it has started. Need to insulate and put more healthy coping mechanisms in place. The whiplash of the TikTok stuff over the weekend convince me I had to put more safe guards in place, and figure out how to help others close to me that need them as well.

“On the other hand, one of the things I really believe about the podcasting world, one thing that makes me very hopeful about it, is these podcasts have built unbelievably huge audiences not being primarily about doom. They don’t actually have a big negativity bias. They’re very hopeful. They’re futuristic. The obvious thing to say is: The opposite of doom is hope. But I think the opposite of doom is curiosity — at least in this respect. I don’t think it’s utopia. I think it’s something about curiosity, interest, beauty. There is this way that doom is a belief that we know how things are going to go.” Dave and Doom :) Also the # of David Cho sighs in this was intense!

I also care about Dave Cho! Been missing this series. Hope to hear more from you two as you have the time. Cheers.

David Cho

agree with all of 2 (can't get behind point 1, i'm sorry)

I always enjoy listening to how both Dave’s are feeling. This is one of my favourite podcasts and each time one is released it never disappoints.

IT WAS A WEIRD DAY

Idk if anyone will see this but: "MrBeast TikTok bid is being overseen by Trump's Attorney General pick's brother, Brad Bondi. The Attorney General would be responsible for enforcing any ban on TikTok should it fail to find an American buyer."
