Dave on Dave is an ongoing podcast series in which David Cho and David Chen gather together to discuss life and work. Also, usually David Cho has some harsh words to say about David Chen's stuff!

In this episode, David Chen and David Cho discuss the challenging personal/professional times they've been having recently and reflect on the economy that's about to crash. Then, a massive digression about God.

Frank discussions about the ups and downs of fundraising 🤝 thoughts about growing up in the church and becoming an agnostic. This episode was, like, tailor made for me.

I’ve come around to what our political climate is going to be for the foreseeable future. It will never be about the economy It will be about white people, especially white men, who want to feel like they are superior among minorities and the like. The most important question is how bad will it be before they realize, “hmmmm…maybe diversity isn’t that bad.” LBJ: “If you can convince the lowest white man he is better than the best colored man, he will not notice you picking his pockets. Hell, just give a white man someone to look down on and he will empty his pockets for you.”

I found the topic of faith very interesting in this one. I also grew up in an evangelical church and was indoctrinated with those Focus on the Family values. I would like to argue that the religious right has been active in the US since the 70s instead of more recently like you two implied. Reagan and Goldwater were basically proto-Trumps, using vaguely evangelical values to appeal to a very large and active voting base. My own wake up call was 9/11. I was in middle school and found the cognitive dissonance between Jesus’ teachings and the religious right’s reaction to Islam very uncomfortable. The people in church that I was around believed very strongly in the “might makes right” principle that Hegseth seems to exemplify now. I spent my teens deconstructing my own religious beliefs. I called myself agnostic at first until I got tired of religious people trying to preach to me. Now I just tell those who try to evangelize to me that I’m an atheist and their eyes get wide and they stop talking. I also studied evolutionary biology in college and definitely believe that “life uh… finds a way” despite the 2nd law of thermodynamics. One of the things that I miss the most about being religious is the sense of community it brings you. I wish there was more opportunity for connection and community outside of religion. Anyways, I appreciate you two brining up difficult and divisive topics during these difficult and divisive times.

Really, Dave, I’ve been astonished at how much content—QUALITY content—that you’ve been producing in recent weeks, in the midst of much upheaval and multiple challenging circumstances. Apologize for nothing!!

Really enjoyed this episode was great how you both opened up more than you usually do. I feel it is a rare glimpse into other peoples lives and appreciate each of these episodes.
